As someone who flew down from Adelaide it was very frustrating witnessing such a lame effort from our box. First time I thought Sando might get the flick with such an inept "plan" of stopping Ziebell.

Sando was tactically inept - and that's being charitable.

It's been hotter in Adelaide than it has been in Dubai. Camps are more about team building, you can get fit at home just as easy.

Is interesting...that Ziebel qtr probs had a huge say on and raised a lot of questions which ended in the demise of Sandos an L Thompsons contracts..
Sando during that game was relegated to watching Rome burn because he lacked the courage and/or ability to think outside the box. It's all well and good to plan during the week leading up to a game for all that may go wrong, but some things can't be predicted and so good coaches must be able to think on their feet and come up with solutions for the problems that weren't anticipated, as those problems arise, and have the balls to implement those solutions even if they're afraid of making things worse.

absolute misconception .......in days with less training it was indeed appropriate for that purpose

But these guys are in each others pockets full time ....and are doing team building training everyday

Your whole post is a misconception. Nothing will make a group of mates closer than being lost in a foreign country. Well they are not really lost but it is an adventure with mates none the less, making good memories. Some things always stay the same.

Don't even need the foreign country for that, just need to take a wrong turn on a bush path and you'll end up lost for a good couple of hours :p

It's all B..S..t

As soon as footy dept tax came in, those clubs who were unashamed supporters of overseas trips such as Arizona, suddenly had a change of heart

So much for the value of such trips .......if it was that valuable in getting that 1% advantage, they would have continued with the trips

If it means the group is more tight nit, then yes. The benefits of a closer group are enormous. Maybe campaignerston and Tiprat would have thought more about staying had they built greater relationships with their teammates.

It sounds like you don't like sports camps. Have a bad experience when you were a wee lad? I feel sorry for you.

Nah .....just don't believe every bit of AFL spin the clubs put out

Hated AFL clubs challenging tribunal outcomes spending thousands in legal fees and penalties JUST TO BE SEEN TO SUPPORT THEIR PLAYER .......in a no chance to overturn the outcome

There's never been a question that the overseas trips have some benefit. It just needs to be weighed against the benefits that could be gained from spending that money on something else.

I've never really thought they were cost effective, and certainly not every year. Maybe once every five or six - ie once or twice for each long-term player.

Just thought I'd mention that Adelaide will be looking at going to Dubai next year as requested by Walsh.

The temperatures are not blisteringly high but Dubai has the reputation for being one of the most oppressive cities because of the lingering humidity. These conditions are persistent even over night time. Considering that there is very little variation in temperature the stress placed on the body to acclimatize is increased. If you consider that you have a block of training before x-mas, a break (where players are taught to maintain their gains), and then a resumption of training after x-mas, you have to be smart in how much load you can fit into the players before the competitive phase of the season begins.

Intensity of training, volume (how much to fit in) and time are the most important factors here. That is why recovery is so important. I believe that one of the benefits of heat training is that the heat can moderate some type of soft tissue injuries and have better Vo2 max gains. The Nad AL Sheba sporting complex is one of the best equipped sporting complexes in the world and also boasts cutting edge recovery facilities.

The dry heat in Adelaide is not as ideal. I am sure that there would be places in Australia that would come close in terms of conditions but not with the same facilities. It isn't a coincidence that so many world class athletes train there and there is Evidence based research to support Burgo's assertion that heat training is as good as altitude if not better.

Like I said, Walsh wants it next year so you guys might want to do your own research into the subject. Cost for the club was moderated by the fact that the players dipped into their own pockets and we are using the facility for free. Dubai as a destination isn't as far as some of the other destinations that clubs are doing.
