Desperate? Truth is you were pretty competitive - with all these kids having to play roles - without them.
Were we? Richmond were pretty rubbish in the latter half of the season. They got hammered by Fremantle away, lost in an ugly scrap against Fremantle at home, lost to the Gold Coast suns, lost to a rather average injured Carlton side, and drew to Port at home. I liked Richmond early in the season but once they suffered a handful of injuries and lost their confidence, they lost their way. Richmond's performance against Melbourne regressed to Wallace era quality. It was sloppy and only managed to win due to the opposition being terrible.
Even in the first half of the season, where Richmond apparently played well, Richmond still lost as much as it won. It was competitive in all but two matches, but still only won 10 matches. Richmond's injury list was about the average which means it could get a better run, but it could also get a worse run and really suffer. The side also has a lot of flaws, it relies upon Cotchin too much. Daniel Jackson still played 19 matches this season. That worries me. If Lonergan pushes out Jackson for good, he'll get a big tick in my book.
Does Aaron Edwards - at 28 - add more leadership than a good hard kid like Morris (let alone Cotchin)?
Richmond already has a leadership group, and already has good leadership. If anything, Edwards was traded in for his goalkicking skills, and given Richmond was one of the worst in goalkicking this season, it's a smart move.
