Dominated by hiphop, which is to be expected since it makes up about 75% of my itunes in one form or another.

WTF ??????? Never imagined they would do a cover of that !

ok here goes, I will refrain from cheating in an attempt to make myself seem cooler ;)

1. Please, please, please - James Brown - love the artist, can take or leave the track

2. I'm so tired of being alone - Al Green - same again, amazing soul singer, not one of my fave songs of his (but it's pretty good)

3. Curly Locks - Lee "Scratch" Perry - my old man is obsessed with "Scratchy", and as a consequence I have shiteloads of his stuff on my ipod. This is pretty standard 70's reggae/dub

4. Let's Give Jah Jah Praises - Johnny Clarke - ha, I have no idea what this song is and little knowledge of the artist; I would have grabbed it when I raided my old man's reggae collection last summer. Pretty shite song really !

5. Love > Building on Fire - Talking Heads - I'm a massive Talking Heads fan so I'm not suprised something of theirs popped up. This was their first ever single. I've heard (and own) live versions that are far more interesting than this twee little version though.

6. When the world comes to an end - Dirty Projectors - now this is a song (and group) worth talking about ! It has some amaaaazing vocal interplay that would blow some peoples minds (and no doubt annoy others intensely !) - check any live version of the song on Youtube (I'm at work and cannot link) to see the incredible way the two back-up singers mesh their respective melodies to create a weird, bubbling vocal effect (the bands songwriter and control freak Dave Longstreth calls the technique 'hocketing', it really is something quite different ..)

7. Bryter Layter - Nick Drake - I have the three albums that this enigmatic/tragic English singer/songwriter/guitarist released; about %50 of it is really cool, the other %50 I would happily never listen to again - this song is an instrumental, a bit tame really, but some of his stuff is well worth a listen, an incredible guitarist with a fairly unique technique

8. Only the Lonely - Roy Orbison - there was a time when I couldnt stand the Big O and thought he was too wimpy or something - what a massive knobhead I used to be; this guy, rest his troubled soul, was an amazing talent - his soaring vocal range has been well documented, but what I really dig is the sheer drama he instills into a lot of his songs (this song is probably the perfect example of that). I've never heard a bloke sing about himself crying so much ! Having read a bit about his life though, he had every reason to be emotional !

9. Go Your Own Way - Fleetwood Mac - haha, this is a bit boring innit. Classic song which has been played so consistently on radio since it's release in 1977 that a certain amount of over-familiarity has eroded what makes it great.
When it comes to Fleetwood Mac, forget Stevie Nicks, it's all about Lindsey Buckingham, who, despite being a part of one of the best-selling acts of all time, is a criminally under-appreciated guitarist.

10. 'track 7' - Black Rebel Motorcycle Club - I have no idea what this track is called, I copied BRMC's albums from a friend a while back (I had one of their albums already) - they are really good, something about the production is really different too, everything is really LOUD, even when the songs are more subdued the producers seem to make it suffocatingly in-your-face. Friends went and saw them live this year and raved about them.

Talking Heads, then Dirty Projectors.

Have you heard the Dark Was the Night Compilation? David Byrne does a great song with Dirty Projectors.

havent heard the whole compilation JimDocker, but I do have 'Knotty Pine', the track you alluded to ...

managed to see Dirty Projectors when they came to Melbourne last year and they were phenomenal.
I'd seen a lot of Youtube clips of them live but the sound quality was always awful; seeing them in action was a real treat, they pull it all off with panache !

Go Your Own Way is ****ing epic. Buckingham is a beast!

yes, true.

Buckingham has a cool finger-pickin' technique which wasn't often exploited to its fullest in Fleetwood Mac.
Perhaps 'Never Going Back Again' is one of the better examples of what he is great at ..

His solo stuff (which is admittedly patchy imo) utilises his guitar skillz a lot more ..
