From Land of the Giants' preview:

Well, that went just about according to plan, except for JC’s careless/reckless elbow to the jaw of Harris Andrews, which almost certainly guarantees he’ll be out for probably a month. It may as well have been Cameron himself who was injured, at least we’re used to that.
The timing couldn’t be worse. We’ve got a season-defining run of games coming up, starting with Hawthorn this Saturday night at Spotless. This will be a dictionary-definition 8-point game. Win, and we’re almost sure to return to the eight. Lose, and it’s back to cursing the draw with St. Kilda.

At least the fog of disinterest that descended on the team after Round 6 seems to have lifted. We were never really in doubt against the Lions; the class differential was obvious and the effort was there. But it was victory at what’s likely to be a very high price.
Try to look on the bright side. The loss of a star player is always an opportunity for someone else to step up and grab their chance. As to who that might be is yet to be determined.

So, who replaces Jeremy? Well, to be blunt, there isn’t anyone waiting in the wings, so Leon is going to have to shuffle the pack. If Patton goes back to the forward line, big Dawson will continue to ruck regardless of who we’re up against. I can’t see Matt Flynn debuting in the next few weeks, and there’s no-one else we can try in that position, the cupboard is bare.

At least the NEAFL team had a great win today, and it was pleasing to see Adam Kennedy and Matt Buntine being named amongst the best-on-ground.
Maybe there’s no need for too much pessimism just yet. The midfield looks to be back in action and we’ve got enough scoring options up front. The most important thing is the marked improvement in overall effort. Work ethic and persistence are everything. We seem to have rediscovered that in the last few weeks.

But the equation is simple. We have to win at least two of the next four games to make the eight, starting with Hawthorn. It should be a cracker of a game, just what’s needed to warm up a chilly night at Homebush.
I’m backing us to win.

AFL.COM.AU SUMMARY

The result of this match between the ninth-placed Hawks and the 10th-placed Giants will have huge ramifications on the finals chances of the losing side. Both teams have recovered from some shaky form to win their past three matches to sit just outside the eight. Hawthorn will be without star veteran Shaun Burgoyne (hamstring), but the already injury-hit Giants have been rocked by the suspension of Jeremy Cameron (35 goals this season), and the home side will miss their leading goalkicker with Ryan Griffen and Zac Langdon (both 12 goals) their next best. GWS has fixed their pressure on the opposition and they'll need to maintain that around the footy against the Hawks, especially if they hope to contain prolific ball-winner Tom Mitchell. Vice-captain Stephen Coniglio could get a job on Mitchell, with the visitors no doubt planning to try and curb star Giant Josh Kelly.

THE SIX POINTS
1. It was a thrilling draw when the teams played in 2017. Hawthorn led by 15 points at three quarter-time before the Giants kicked five goals to three in the final quarter. Tom Mitchell collected the three Brownlow votes with 39 disposals, nine tackles and one goal.

2. Hawthorn is the equal-strongest third-quarter team this season, they're plus-154 points and have won nine of 13 third quarters. The second quarter is the Giants' strongest; they're plus-156 points, kicking more total points in second quarters than any other side.

3. This is the seventh clash between the sides with Hawthorn winning three games to two and one draw; three of the six matches have been decided by more than 70 points.

4. The Giants are undefeated against Hawthorn at Spotless Stadium, winning by 10 points in 2015 and 75 in 2016. Despite the recent losses the Hawks have won three of their last four matches played in Sydney, all against the Swans.

5. A big advantage for Hawthorn could come in front of goal; the Hawks are ranked fifth for accuracy at 49.1 per cent, a long way ahead of the Giants (15th at 43.7 per cent).

6. At number 15 in the Schick AFL Player Ratings, Hawks big man Ben McEvoy sits 538 places ahead of his likely opponent, GWS ruckman Dawson Simpson.

IT’S A BIG WEEK FOR …
With Jeremy Cameron missing, Giants forward Jon Patton will need to have a presence inside 50. The powerful Victorian started quietly last week but finished with three goals against Brisbane.

PREDICTION: Greater Western Sydney by 9 points.

Well, the teams are named and it doesn't matter now who isn't in the team; it's up to those who are in the team to get the job done. An 8 point game - win and we go above the Hawks for now and are back into the 8, with renewed confidence and a chance of fighting it out for a finals berth. Lose, and we probably go 6 points out of the 8 and unlikely to make it. Big game for everyone - it's at Spotless so hopefully the boys are pumped and get it done. C'mon Giants, let's kick some Hawk tailfeathers!!

Need Patton to step up big time.

We shouldnt have a problem getting the ball down there, its just what we do with it when we do thats the issue.

Here's hoping the not so affectionate nickname that my mates and I have dubbed Patton with "flippers" isn't justified today and he can actually catch some marks, especially when uncontested. Hopefully he has his kicked feet on too, but it seems with him its either one or the other; hands that can catch OR feet that can kick straight. He seemed to have improved on that last year, but this year it looks like he is back to his old ways.

He has stood up when Jezza has been unavailable in the past, so fingers crossed this occasion yields the same results.

great first quarter, below solid second quarter. really wasteful in that second and we let hawthorn back into it, we should be up by double what our lead is now. more tackle ferociousness in the second half and as other have said, better shots at goal.

really in this, we cant afford to screw this one, keep playing well and beat hawthorn into submission.

Pattons aim sightly off
