If he keeps playing like he did today I'll be Zerk-Thatcherfest before long.

You know why he was good today though? Because he played the exact opposite style of game to what the 'he just had too much responsibility at Essendon but he'll be a good third defender!' types tried to sell him as. He's never gonna be a good third tall defender, he doesn't have the skillset for the role. He might be a good #1 stopper if he keeps playing like he did today though.

I thought Farrell and Burton were good.

Have to watch what they do without the ball.

Burton especially was timid in the contest. Not prepared to put his body on the line. Did not keep his feet and fell over too easily on the MCG member's wing in one contest.

Their first job is to defend.

That is why they get found out in finals when the pressure is more intense.

He wasn’t great today, agree.

Just saying that Champion Data rate him.

He’s a bit of a whipping boy for this forum I’ve noticed.
That's because he's a good rebounder. Champion Data don't measure soft defensive efforts.

Would be very happy to see our F50 setup from the second half with Todd deep forward and leading to space and Dixon further up the ground as a CHF going forward.

We need to work on our wingers covering our very aggressive half backs forward movement or pull them back a little. Being exposed on the rebound against two bottom 6 teams is concerning.

Mate us bedwetters will continue to have a valid point, at least until that elusive day when Port wins a preliminary final.
We had the Choker tag in finals well before Hinkley.
This has been going on for over 20 years.
We have won a lot of minor round games this century all for one flag and the worst performance ever in a GF.
Nobody is happy about that, and we definitely need change at the top but there is a genuine lack of support for the team on this forum.

Bergman has so much talent, just looks like such an important part of our future. Then he gets the ball and every few touches just kicks it direct to an opposition player with no Port player in sight and you're just like, again!!! It's not just clangers he does, it's like some complete brain fart.

Just don't honestly know what goes through his head sometimes. It's like the thought about where he's kicking is really lacking regularly.

There's no comparison between Choco and Hinkley. Yes we underachieved in finals under Choco but at least we achieved at some point. Hinkley's nickname isn't Donuts for no reason.

Not surprised at the result.

Soldo took the ruck honours IMO/as I predicted and the PA key forwards were just too good for an ageing Grimes, depth Miller and some other kids. Capitalised just like they should.

Port mids too slick and quick for us as well. Yes we had our moments but I never felt like we were going to win.

I think PA is a good team this year. Astute trading and a gun drafted midfield. Might go well in September.

So what do you do with this sort of player?
Keep going with him and hope he improves?
Hope while your waiting for this improvement he doesn’t cost you a big game
Drop him or trade him.

Yes, we got the win, but against an opponent who was fielding its weakest side in more than a decade. The glaring lack of effort & intent in the first half was everything we’ve come to be accustomed to under a Hinkley led side. It’s fair to say that we desperately need our two best competitors in SPP & JHF back in our side, to provide that uncompromising, hard edge.

Mead had a big opportunity to announce himself today, but had too little influence for large periods of the game.

BZT was excellent down back, the clear best of our KPD brigade.

Some of Dixon’s & Burtons efforts were downright inexcusable, they just have to better than that.

Rioli was hardly sighted all game, has to do more.

Marshall & Finny both responded well in the 2nd half.

Lachie Jones needs a spell. He’s fast becoming our very own version of Darcy Fogarty.

Darcy Perm-Jones was surprisingly good, needs to bring that every week.

With Lever & May both likely to miss next week, there might not be a better opportunity to debut Tom Scully. Get the kid in & see what he’s got, he’s earned his chance.

Didn't see all the half hearted efforts from Burton? The times he literally forgot the ball? Farrell did a heck of a lot of running around for cheap possessions without hurting the Oppo, and then when put under pressure he coughed up a bunch of handballs and fumbles that cost us goals.

Honestly as a fan of Burton, it was probably the worst game he's ever played. Seriously the moment he allowed the guy behind him to mark, just clearing space for him in the 3rd was actually horrendous. Then there was the cross from Mead he literally just pulled out of, it was worse than the biggest Amon squib we ever saw and that was just a couple of the moments. There were more.
I thought Farrell was ok but agree with You on Burton. Very flakey.

Playing the majority of his 50 odd game career down back at the G for a crap team in front of a packed house every second week is worth as much experience as Boak’s 350 games imo.

So far this trade is looking thumbs up with Essendon getting the lemon.

We underachieved shockingly with Williams, should have won two flags at least and maybe 3.
Look at the players we had ffs.
Also his pig head ways gave us a record that will last longer than you and me put together.

Yeah we won a premiership but it cost us years of pain, after 2007 we had a group of players that was scarred for life thanks to Williams.

Plus the fact that the club chairman when Choco was coach wasn't a complete moron.

I don't think it's fair to say "but Richmond had X players out today."

I remember round 4, 2019 when Richmond had a bunch of stars out and still managed to win at Adelaide Oval. They had a 15 minute bad patch today but I'll happily take a 5 goal win on the road against an MCG specialist every weekend.

Under Choco the only question mark was whether he could get the team to perform in finals. In the home and away season there was never a question of whether the team would show up. 3 consecutive years top of the ladder. 2001 popped out of no where but still managed to beat Essendon. Beat Brisbane at home in 02 to win the minor premiership and beat them at the Gabba in 2003. You rarely if ever saw a flakey game during the 22 rounds.

Contrast that to Ken who has his record as coach inflated by great records against the bottom sides (St Kilda, North and Gold Coast). There's just a huge element of unreliability with this team right now - and there's no amount of player turnover that has changed said unreliability in near a decade of change.

So much this. I find Dixon so frustrating. He rarely actually leads to the ball. He just stands there clogging up all the space and when he does get it he misses whenever there is any pressure or expectation.

In the first game this and the first half this forces Marshall to lead to the pockets and very difficult shots even for a guy of his shooting ability. This why I thought they should have just played Dixon in the ruck last year. With soldo now they should do with Dixon what Carlton do with McKay. Get him leading for the ball between the two 50 meter arcs and get him the hell out of the forward 50.

I think Farrell and Burton are mainly in the team to do damage with the ball in hand, I didn’t think it was too bad. I don’t think either have ever been great at defending one on one. Might need to watch the game again, thought the turnovers were the biggest issue today and Burton went at 91% from 23 disposals.

Does Burton do any damage with ball in hand? Would rather Williams out there. Or Bergman back at least he is an aerial threat.

Lachie Jones is Darcy Fogarty in Defender form, and even less useful.

Jesus Christ that’s one of the most brutal calls I’ve ever heard. Hope Lachie never sees this.
