According to AFL records Sidebottom could have taken his game to an elite status this year, but reporter Ben Guthrire thinks 'Sidebottom's season to date has been far from shocking and he has played a couple of blinders (think Anzac Day) but his form has also been slightly patchy.'

What does everyone else think? If he is doing that bad should we move him to another position?

If he could consistently play at his best, and there is no reason why he shouldn't be able to, then he'd be an A grader. Having said that he has been far from horrible this season and it difficult to complain when the games where he does turn up to play in are usually important ones. His inconsistency is what everyone finds to be frustrating. He has as much if not more naturally ability than Beams yet at this stage is a class below.

Like others, his development would have improved even more if he was playing in a full contingent of midfielders. Has started some games well earlier in the year, but hasn't quite finished off as well. Next year is the year I think we will see his improvement- when we have a fully fit midfield.

Problem is- where do you play him and what role will he best be for the team? Not quick enough for a wing- but finds space. Can he be a clearance player in the middle resting up forward?

The only disappointment that has surprised me is that he seems to be missing a lot more targets than he used to.

He is one of our best endurance athletes so he has to stay in the midfield. He also knows where the goals are which is a huge strength as a midfielder.

To become elite he needs to improve his disposal. Gets enough of the pill but just isn't damaging enough. Those dinky little kicks that seem to hang in the air lessens his impact.

I've been disappointed too - just doesn't turn up some weeks. But then he must get a kick in the backside over the week and has a good one. He's been around too long to be this irregular. He's not one to turn a game around when we're doing badly - bit of a downhill skier at times

Is Sidebottom after O'Brien in the alphabet, and if they are potting Collingwood players alphabetically why did they miss the Seed before Sidey?

I think these media types are all dense.
How long until Robbo is sent off to a rehab clinic by his employers?
Or is it dementia?
Whatever he man should not be allowed in public with his problems and definitely nowhere near a keyboard..

I think Buckley hit the nail on the head when he was asked about Sidebottom - he will greatly benefit from the inclusion of other senior players.

I thought he looked a lot more solid in his role last week. Expecting a form turn around.

Beams will help Steele Majorly

Hes not going as badly as people are saying I reckon, has played some exceptionally good games this year but has had some not so good ones also. Being that outside player though, he is largely reliant on us winning the inside ball which we haven't been doing.

Top 5-6 in the Copeland, there are 7-8 other players I'd be "picking on" if I was a journo doing a piece on Collingwood before I launched into Steele.

I agree with you Matty. but what I think the journo is saying is that he looked like he should be in the elite level by natural progression after last year but he has stalled and is playing either the same level as last year or a little lower.

Has been pretty good but has dropped in and out of games.

Let the media say what they want.
Sidebottom is doing his part for the team week in week out.
He may not be the flashiest of players running around, but he does what is asked of him every week.

Can't wait to hear the commentators start saying
Bruce: " Sidebottom to Beams, back to Sidebottom , back to Beams. Beams goes forward with purpose, and find a leading Cloke. Geeeee, Cloke didn't have to break stride, great kick by Beams".
Dennis: "But what about the play in the centre of the ground between Sidebottom and Beams. They wax so well together. That was Special".

Sidebottom will never be an elite midfielder who gathers 30+ a week. That's just not his game. He will however be an elite floating half forward who can turn a game in a quarter.

Fair enough, but I think he's being unfairly compared to Beams who made that leap into the elite category last year. The facts are most players never become elite, so we should actually be happy that Sidey at least is consistent from year to year, unlike some players.

Sidey seems to kick up a gear come finals and for that he gets a big plus. I see a mixture of truth here, hints he has another level and yet definately on the outside so heavily effected by team performance. Not a weak link in any terms tho.

Having a good year and will get better with beams back. His biggest asset is finding space in the forward line and being a good link player. At the moment with the midfield suffering due to injuries, he has had to play huge midfield minutes. Not allowing him to snag 1-2 goals a game. Otherwise he's been fine. Great inside/outside players.
