Tim Ginnivan said Rozee was going to get mid 20 votes.
Port people overrate themselves every year.
He probably will next year. Players often need a breakout year before the umpires realise it’s ok to give them votes.

I know he played mostly off half back but I reckon McLeod only polled 1 vote in 97.

Walker 14 (BoG in 4 of Adelaide's wins)
Keays 11 (faded in second half of the Season)
Laird 10
Dawson 8

<<daylight>>

Berry/Fogarty/O'Brien 2 each.

Conclusions:
We have a dearth of top-end talent.
TEX --- what can we say? Match-winner, KPF leader on-field, reliable, inspirational. Love the bloke.

Also confirms what most have been saying in here all year. We need a big-bodied, skillful mid (or two!).

That's an interesting point...also coincides with the team fading badly. Felt Berry was robbed of a few votes, as he was our best mid after Laird especially in the latter part of the season.

Tex is a club legend, an absolute beast of a player, i will be very sad to see him hang up the boots after another year or 2, but if fog can be as half as good as tex has been, we will be alright.

And as we all know but maybe others overlook, Tex’s value is not just his playing ability but his leadership, his on-field coaching, and the way he stands up for his team mates. He is a total role model in all these areas and he shows exactly what it takes to be an influential player and make a real difference in a game rather than just “playing the game”

I'm not sure why people put so much stock into these votes. Umpires are focussing on umpiring, not judging the players. I imagine they just quickly look at the stats after the game and pick a few players that stood out before clocking off for the day. They're not getting paid to do a deep analysis of every game, go through replays and extra footage.

Interestingly Adelaide seems to have bucked the Midfielder's award trend. Probably to the detriment of midfield players.

  • Walker got fair representation for his season. Unlike most forwards
  • Berry got little recognition at all
  • Keays only votes after round 5 came as a forward
  • Multiple games where two (or more) Adelaide midfielders were amongst the best and the umpires seem to have made a specific point of only giving one of them votes, and finding other players to give token votes to.
  • Zero games with multiple Adelaide midfielders (including O'Brien) polling simultaneously.

The Brownlow medal is flawed. But the main positive is that the umpires votes are largely independent of arbitrary media hype/narratives/vested interests/etc. compared to other awards in Australia/Worldwide.

Our mids are not considered any good in the comp, cant really argue about it... it is what it is... it's been a while since we had macca Edwards Goodwin and roo .... since danger , we haven't drafted a star mid. Our best mid might be laird atm, he doesn't rate that high in the national comp. Too many high draft picks have been busts for us....

The midfielders aren't very good compared to the rest of the comp. But compared to the rest of the Adelaide squad they are the best. Tier list would be: Walker and Laird in contention for club champion -> Dawson/Keays (first half of 2022) + Berry (Second Half) -> Daylight -> everyone else.

Plus there were games where both Keays and Laird were amongst the best or Laird and Berry. Neither pair polled simultaneously.

To judge the bolded quantitatively, you can simply compare the Brownlow or coaches votes for the Crows midfielders in a given match to those for the oppo midfielders.

The Crows' Coaches' votes for Club Champion might well be very different from Umpires' Brownlow votes.
I'd expect the Coaches to reward some players for doing a particular job** which might have escaped our attention.

** It's that kind of thing that results in players being re-selected when many of us are howling for them to be dropped.

The weird coach's preferences traditionally haven't affected the pointy end of voting in club champion. It tends to be a player sneaking into the top5/10 that raises suspicion. Luke Brown 2020 not withstanding.

Incidentally, did they ever release the round-by-round votes for 2021?
