Taylor Walker - 14 Votes

As for Tex, 14 votes for a KPF is a hell of an effort. Equivalent to a mid getting 30.
In fact he scored better than Hawkins who was selected in the AA team and whats more selected as captain. Based on Brownlow votes the two tall forwards should have been Cameron and Tex.

And as we all know but maybe others overlook, Tex’s value is not just his playing ability but his leadership, his on-field coaching, and the way he stands up for his team mates. He is a total role model in all these areas and he shows exactly what it takes to be an influential player and make a real difference in a game rather than just “playing the game”
And playing at an elite level, while having endured through many club/personal tragedies. This is a guy who has serious mental fortitude. A genuine leader of any footy team.

Had Tex been playing for a Vic team, the media attacks would have greatly lessened and the applause would have been a lot more than what it is now (close to zero).

Interestingly Adelaide seems to have bucked the Midfielder's award trend. Probably to the detriment of midfield players.

  • Walker got fair representation for his season. Unlike most forwards
  • Berry got little recognition at all
  • Keays only votes after round 5 came as a forward
  • Multiple games where two (or more) Adelaide midfielders were amongst the best and the umpires seem to have made a specific point of only giving one of them votes, and finding other players to give token votes to.
  • Zero games with multiple Adelaide midfielders (including O'Brien) polling simultaneously.

The Brownlow medal is flawed. But the main positive is that the umpires votes are largely independent of arbitrary media hype/narratives/vested interests/etc. compared to other awards in Australia/Worldwide.
I think it does make some sense when you see we won roughly 1/3 of the matches. Which means our mids were mostly beaten during the year. When we did win, often we won through a complete team effort, rather than the mids being tremendously dominant on the night. So in our wins, it would likely and deservedly be a random mix of umpire voting for our players.

This!
Hawkins named as AA Captain was a --- 'surprise' --- to say the least.

Added to that, Tex was supplied by half-hearted ruckwork to an errant, panicked midfield.
