As a broken record, i will repeat it onc again;

He could end up the very best of the young (>25) quicks

I wonder if the future is playing 5 bowlers two or three of whom are genuine bowling all-rounders.

Early days it may be but both Starc and Pattinson average in the 30s with the bat.

How do you make a decision between Hazlewood (it feels like an insult to call him a workhorse), Starc, Pattinson and Cummins (who is now where Pattinson has been for the last few years, lackink that rhythm but on the comeback)?

Its not inconceivable to see that.

You would need some very outstanding batsmen though. Smith in this form is a good start.

Ntini for Philander and Pollock for Morkel, maybe play Duminy at 7 and play him as the #1 spinner.

I was really focusing on the batsmen when I realised how good their current three quicks are.

Substitute Philander in for Ntini and Morkel in for Pollock Richie Cunningham based on age. It just strengthens the team over a longer period of time.

He was a product of their cricket culture and says he left because of the quota system. While I believe him when he says he would not have changed anything he may well have played for South Africa if the selections were on merit. I feel like it was SA's fault that he plays for England more than anything.

Not necessarily.

If you can get averages in the low 30s from two of three bowlers the overall runs cancel out having the extra specialist batsman.

And people will still bang on about Englands selection policies and procedures.

Whiteman 6, Agar 7, Starc 8, Pattinson 9, Cummins 10, Hazlewood 11. Not too shabby.
Why is it that Mark Howard feels like one of the boys and Andy Maher only ever comes across as an outsider who is never in on the joke?
Because Howie's the little kid everybody loves. Maher is the awkward one everybody doesn't like but nobody wants to tell him.

Thinking about the development of spin in Australia and watching guys like Zampa and Boyce bowl in the T20 (knowing that their 4 day opportunities are limited) I wonder whether it's time to enable the selection of specialist spinners as 12th men who can be substituted into a team for the second bowling innings.

Make it so they can't bat to prevent selection of all-rounders whose primary role is batting and allow the batsman to be subbed back for the second batting innings (if you're bowling first).

It's not going to immediately overcome the panic that sets into captains when a young spinner goes for runs while trying to take a wicket but if the position has no real selection implication it breaks down at least one barrier.

Botha is obviously highly regarded in South Australian cricket but he should not be preventing Zampa from bowling in 4 day cricket.

Having watched Ahmed bowl in the T20 he is also someone who should be playing for Victoria as he is a class act (along with Muirhead and Hollond).

We've got three young leggies in Australian cricket with control enough to be viable selections as T20 players as negators and wicket takers and they hardly play 4 day cricket. Doesn't seem like we're looking that hard for Warne's protege (which is not to say that anyone will be as good as Warne - though there is something special about the way Muirhead bowls the ball, it is almost as natural).

Edit: not intending to claim as my own idea, surely someone has already suggested it.

I don't see the hype around Ahmed. He doesn't spin it that much, he gets carted by our better players of spin whenever he comes against them, and his flight isn't great. But Zampa has regularly played for South Australia over the past 2 seasons, only missed one this season (due to injury IIRC). Botha isn't preventing him from playing. The only one not playing 4 day cricket is Muirhead.

****, I wish Bumble commentated out here all the time.

He's hilarious. That accent.
Only bloke who's anywhere near his standard here is Mark Nicholas, another Pom.

Ian Chappell is clearly the best of the Aussies...

I like Michael Atherton as a commentator too, talking of the Poms.

Bill Lawry barely qualifies anymore. He commentates once per summer.
Still head and shoulders above the rest.
