As some may be aware, early in 2013 Kyptastic ran a Top 100 Movie Countdown on this forum (and did a sterling job too). It was decided about 6 weeks ago to update this countdown with slightly amended scoring rules, in order to see if the outcome would still be the same, and see where any new movies released in the last 18 months to 2 years would fit into the overall ranking.
I’m ripping a lot of the following from Kyptastic‘s blurb from last year’s Top 100 Movie Countdown, as I really can’t put it any better myself.
Like Kyptastic did, I’m hoping that the release of the countdown will promote discussion and reflection on the films themselves and their position within the countdown. Just remember, it’s a most popular 100 as voted by us, not necessarily a “best” 100.
This time around, people were asked to submit a list of between 10 and 20 films which they considered to be their favourites, not just 10 like last time. It was important that these were ranked from 1 to 20, as the films ranking within a person's list determined how many points were awarded. For example, a film ranked 1 on a posters list would receive 20 points, whilst a film ranked 15 would receive 6 points.
Once all the votes were tallied, the list was created. At the lower levels of the list, there were many ties on raw votes. In order to separate these, I have re-used Kyptastic’s tie-breaking method from last year i.e. the more lists a film appeared on, the higher it would be in the countdown.
If film were tied on points and lists made, the films were ranked by their highest individual score.
For example:
Film A is ranked 8 on Poster 1's list and 4 on poster 2's list
Film B is ranked 7 on Poster 3's list and 5 on poster 4's list
Both these films will receive 30 points (Film A 13+17, Film B 14+16). Both films appeared on 2 lists.
Film A would be ranked higher because it was ranked 4 on Poster 2's list, compared to 5 on Poster 4's list.
There were a few occasions where even this didn’t split two movies. I thought about tossing a coin, or assigning the two movies a random number with the higher random number winning, but in the end I decided just to assign both movies equal ranks (e.g. both movies were ranked =84th, with the next movie ranked 86th). Fortunately this didn’t happen too often and not in the ‘pointy’ end of the countdown.
Like Kyptastic was last year, I was worried there weren’t going to be enough votes for a Top 100, but there were enough in the end for each film on this list to have appeared on at least two poster's lists – well done!
Overall,43 posters took part in the countdown, whilst 445 films received votes.
The countdown will begin in earnest about this time tomorrow evening, and I plan to conclude it with #3-1 on Sunday December 21st. In the meantime, a small hors d’eouvre – the movie that just missed out.
