State Focus WA 2024 - Western Australia’s junior footy talent

Remove this Banner Ad

The WAFL club websites have been down for a few days, so I can't update the remaining three squads.

Still, it's very difficult to know which teams stand out on paper.

Claremont look like favourites as always but Swan Districts and South Fremantle have invested heavily in below age players in the last 18 months and might be ready to challenge the Tigers.

Not too sure about the others with talkof many injuries and a vast number of played involved in PSA football for the majority of the season.

37 touches and 2 goals for EF Declan Pauline in EF colts win over Peel yesterday. Pauline played some good footy last year as an under ager in EF colts campaign last year. Not talked about much, no doubt a height thing. Will be interesting if a few more performances like that will see the young fella get a state consideration.

Still trying to work out how EF Sage Clarke is a state inclusion, as he is not on EF colts list, and didn't play any of EF colts pre season games. All i can find on him, is that he comes from the South Perth Footy club, which is in Perth's junior zone. Definitely a left field selection by the WA u/19 selectors.

No Jake Boniwell so far this season for EF.....injured?

Watched Souths vs East Perth on the weekend. Not a lot of players that caught the eye (especially from this draft crop) but wanted to put some names out there.

SF #27 Jaxon Artemis - thought he was a standout. Looks and plays a bit like Josh Weddle. Loved his attacking run off half back and ability to open up space with run and carry. Wouldn't be surprised if he gets overlooked for state selection but checks all the boxes of tall, athletic, quick, good marking ability that clubs froth over. If he was Victorian they'd be talking him up as a top 10 pick already.
SF #7 Fred Rodriguez (25 draft) - solid midfielder. Only really worked forwards and loves a hack kick to nobody but definitely think there's something to work with there with how easily he seems to find the footy
SF #8 Max Skerritt (25 draft) - seemed a little overwhelmed by the step up in opponent rather than obviously being the best player in every futures game. Didn't have as much space and time to do what he liked and struggled with someone being hard on him the entire game

EP #23 Marcus Cassidy (25 draft) - always found himself in the right spot. Very smart footballer playing in the forward half. Good IQ, finds open space well
EP #14 Jake Caton (25 draft) - Nephew of Kevin Caton, looked nervous on debut and some fumbling errors but a nice kick of the footy out of the back half and think he's more than capable of taking the game on but seemed happy to defer to teammates
EP #12 Luke Hallett (25 draft) - just a solid midfielder. looked shorter than advertised (184) but really didn't make a lot of mistakes, just did his job
EP #33 Matthew Petagna (25 draft) - composed in the back half. Played well

Nice work as always mate.

What do you think of Andre Gulluni of EP #7? I know he's strictly as outside run and carry player but he has some silk - although I might be the only person rating him thus far.

Didn't stand out for me, but had a bit of zip on the outside. Probably not a player who'll make the AFL unless he gets a massive tank and can play on the wing.

Well WA have certainly found a bolter......Luke Urquhart (EF)......190cm mid/forward....powerhouse
Urquhart definitely played a big part in EF storming last quarter v Cl. Pity he is PSA, so will disappear soon for a good chunk of the season.

Cl did all the hard work in the first 3 quarters to be deserving winners. Some big boys out there for Cl, plus the Banfield boys racked up some decent numbers.

Hamish Davis info? I saw him in the grand final last year I think? and thought he looks class.
190cm, athletic forward. Kicked 3 yesterday and was one of Claremont's better players.

Always presents, always wants the ball on the lead. Nimble at ground level. A key for WA this year now.

Thank goodness some bolters are putting their hand up this year and not just Davis and Urquhart.

There are others like Luke Cotellessa (SD), Colby McDonald (SD), Clancy Dennis (CL), Hugh Boxshall (CL), Andre Gulluni (EP), Jaxon Artemis (SF) who have caught the eye and have made big improvements.

Colts under lights at Joondalup on Saturday night was a fun watch - close seesawing game, reasonably good skills and ball movement.

WP #3 Kayle Gerreyn - It's hard to believe that this kid is only 17. He's definitely taller than the 192cm he's billed at - physically imposing, strong contested mark. He's got decent ruckwork too and his spread around the ground is okay. Definitely a hybrid ruck-forward in the Darcy Cameron mold where he's very adept at both. Similar to Livingstone from last year but with more AFL traits and more athletic rather than relying on brute strength. If he'd kicked straight in front of goal he'd have been best on ground by a long way. Did belt a kid in the face and give away a goal after the play though, probably needs to keep that in check but a little bit of aggression is good.
WP #16 Kayde Sherwood - Unfortunately not draftable at his size and lack of speed, but it's nice to see an inside-outside midfielder who can hit a target by foot. Positions himself well around the contest.
WP #7 Austin Chapman (23 draft) - First game for his new club. Has clearly got a lot of talent but needs to defer to his teammates in better positions more often. Tried to do a little too much all by himself.
WP #49 Riley Hill (23 draft) - The perfect foil for Gerreyn as a backup ruck. Could probably be a #1 ruck at another team, taller and less built but great tap work and follow up around the ground.
WP #13 Jack Wooden - Plays just like his old man but with a better skill set. Really hard in and under at the contest, great at extraction.

P #35 Liam Clarke (23 draft) - Thought he was the best player on the field but underrated as a key defender. Read the ball well in the air and fought hard to win the contest.
P #19 Baxter Gray (25 draft) - Lovely kick for goal. Quite quick for a medium forward as well, definitely something there to look at for next year if he keeps improving.
P #6 Zac Zilioli (25 draft) - Great kick after the siren from 45 to draw the game under pressure. Showed a bit of zip as a high half-forward, would hope he pushes into the midfield next season.
P #8 Chazzon Foss - Can't kick but it's so great to see a player from this generation with absolute wheels and a willingness to just go forward with the ball.

Joshua Nomlatyu from EF has caught my eye. 197cm and under age. Not sure if the young fella is of Somalian descent or not...anyone know? Kicked a brace in both games so far for EF from limited possessions. I see his sister, Avula is the ruck for the WA girls U/16 state side. Both appear to be very tall and athletic.....Joshua obviously needs a few protein shakes, but has shown some positive signs in his development.

Yeah another great addition to the WA 2025 cohort. 197cm already....and for kid that size kicks well. Could be anything....or as we know....nothing at all next season.

I'm 95% sure that his heritage is from the Eastern Cape in South Africa. The 5% doubt is whether his family moved there from somewhere else but I'm sure a relative or friend or the man himself will let us know here.

And moved him up quite a few places on the 2025 WA thread.

Now, where is Jake Boniwell? Any contacts at the Sharks mate? I can't keep him number 1 if he's not setting foot on the ground. Very frustrating number of injuries. It's a good year for WA but it won't mean much if the injuries decimate the group.

Mate, no idea where young Boniwell is. Hasn't been allocated a jumper number on EF colts list, so I assume the injury must be long term. Agree if he ain't on the field, he can't possibly stay number 1. If fit and playing, definitely would be hanging around in your top 15.

Interesting to see both Urquhart and Morgan from EF have had growth spurts over the off season. Both were hanging around the 185 cm mark last year going off EF colts list. Now Urquhart is listed as being 190cm and Morgan is listed at 191cm. Both PSA boys, so EF are going to miss them for decent periods over the season.

Are these your rankings Futbolista ?

WP #3 Kayle Gerreyn - It's hard to believe that this kid is only 17. He's definitely taller than the 192cm he's billed at
Just on this, rookieme has Gerreyn listed at 199cm. I'm not sure where they got that info from, but it definitely feels like its a more accurate measurement.
