East Perth defeated Claremont in today's Preliminary Final (Go you Mighty Royals!)

Final score:

EP: 6.1 - 11.3 - 17.6 - 24.12 (156)
C: 3.2 - 7.4 - 11.7 - 14.9 (93)

A couple of notes on today's match (which swans4eva! should be able to collaborate):
  • EP's total score is the second-highest score against Claremont in a finals match (Perth scored 24.18 (162) to beat the Tigers in the 1986 1st Semi Final)
  • Claremont's 63-point loss is their biggest loss since Round 19, 2009 when they lost to Swan Districts by 87 points.
  • Claremont became only the 12th Minor Premier to not reach the Grand Final, and the first since Subiaco in 2005 (Claremont themselves went out in straight sets previously in 2001 and 1979).
  • East Perth became the 13th fourth-placed side (in the top 4 era) to make the Grand Final. If successful (fingers crossed), they'd be the 5th team to win the premiership from fourth spot. Bizarrely, the past three of these instances happened in 1963, 1964, and 1965.
I always thought you were a tiger. Why Warren Ralph as your avatar? Champion that he was.

Out of curiosity, I would like to ask a question to any of you native Western Australians, but your age may depend on the answer you give, by which I mean whether you following the WAFL prior to West Coast joining the VFL in 1987.
Do you still barrack as passionately for your WAFL side as you did prior to the existence of West Coast, or is your passion shared more evenly between your WAFL club and West Coast or Fremantle?

Was always a fave of mine. Was too young to enjoy his 1980-83 period given that I was only born in 1979, but I remember watching him bag 10 in the 1987 Second Semi and then saw him bob up as a controversial selection in the 1989 finals. I also thought his name was funny :)

Only later did I discover how much of a gun he was.

I am way more passionate about Swan Districts & the WAFL in general then the corporate, Vic centric VFL I mean AFL!!
Swans are a real football club not a money hungry corporation like the AFL clubs!

In terms of most goals in a finals series in the same timeframe - Jason Heatley scored 21 goals in his three finals matches in 1993 (his first WAFL season).

With West Perth and East Perth playing off in the WAFL Grand Final tomorrow, it is interesting to note that 7 of the 9 clubs have now made the Grand Final in the past 5 seasons, dating back to 2009. These same 7 clubs have also taken part in at least 1 finals series from 2011 onwards.

This leaves Perth and Peel which, if one equates the WAFL with the Solar System, would be Mercury and Pluto. Perth have not made a GF since 1978, not won a flag since 1977 and last played in the finals in 1997, just its 3rd finals appearance since 1978. 1997 was the same year that Peel Thunder entered the WAFL, and they have come nowhere near a finals series in 17 completed seasons since then.

It is odd that 2 teams in a 9 club competition should consistently struggle, where the other 7 are relatively even. When Peel were launched in late 1996, I am sure that the administrators at the time would have envisaged a far different outcome for a new team in a large, rapidly growing population area. Likewise, when the final siren sounded through the teeming rain to end the 1978 GF, Demon fans were no doubt disappointed, but confident that the Demons could make amends in 1979, and even if they did not Perth would add more premierships in the 1980s to those won in the 1950s, 60s & 70s. Of course, they have not, and have never looked like premiership threats, even during their few and far between finals appearances.

Another long-standing hoodoo is that of the West Perth reserves, which last won a reserve-grade premiership way back in 1960. Tomorrow the Falcons reserves meet the Bulldogs and have a chance to end this. I have seen West Perth play in quite a few reserves grand finals, and was wondering how many they have lost since 1960? I could not find any reserves stats online. If anyone knows, this would be much appreciated.

In our defence, in 1997 when we finished 3rd, it was by only 5% behind East Fremantle, who we had beaten 2 out of 2 times during the year - both without Brett Spinks.

And we beat East Perth by 67 points in the 1st Semi - they were in very strong form before that game.

And we were on top of the ladder after Round 21.

Another stat from the day today was East Perth's 88 hitouts.

I've got match stats from 1968, 1983-86 and from 2006 until the present and that's a new record*.

Previous record was 83 by West Perth against (oddly enough) East Perth in Round 16 this season.

In fact 7 of the top 10 hitout tallies for a team have come from this season (and 9 out of the top 12), with the other three coming from 1968.

*Am loathed to call anything a record since the data I have represents such a small part of the competition's history.

A few goalkicking-related points from 2013 before I call it a night.
  • West Perth's Josh Mellington booted 35.31 for the season. That's the lowest tally for a Premier's leading goalkicker since 1931 when Eric 'Tarzan' Glass booted 30 goals in East Fremantle's premiership season.
  • Subiaco's leading goalscorer for the season was Bradley Stevenson - with a mere 20.17. My goalkicking records go back to 1929 at the moment and this is lowest tally for a Subiaco goalkicking champ in that time.
  • Paul Bevan (55.24) and Brennan Stack (52.24) became the first pair of Perth players to each kick 50 goals in a season since 1986 when Mick Rea (90.46) and Wayne Ryder (52.49) achieved the feat.

I used to work with a guy named Doug Dixon who played for Subiaco 1968-1970. What stats can you give about him? He only played 17 games.

Will check later tonight for you worbod and get you what I can.

The dad of childhood friends of mine played for South Fremantle during this time, and it's weird seeing his name on the sheets and looking at the stats... and then trying to picture the man I still know running around on the ground.

Hi worbod - sorry for the delay on this one.

Doug only played one match in 1968 - and that was the famous Rd 21 match against East Fremantle I posted stats for a few pages back:

I'm pretty sure Doug's listed as R. Dixon (the Footy Week pages were known for typos). I've got separate scores from that day and he's listed as D. Dixon.

Not bad stats - but he was out of the side for the following week's 1st Semi Final vs East Perth (which Subi lost).

I've also got the scorecards for the first three rounds of 1969 but I need to check if he's on there (can't remember off the top of my head at the moment). Will update again later on for you!

Also, Doug kicked 1.0 in rd 6 of 1969, 0.1 the following week and he pops up again on my radar in rd 19, 1970 when he kicked 1.0.

Am i reading something wrong or did R Gorton (subi) get 15 goals from 10 kicks???

Am trying to get a list of players who have played in premierships in WA and Victora.

Here's what I've got so far... feel free to let me know if I've forgotten someone!

Stan " Pops " Heal played in Melbournes 1941 flag and followed it up with another flag with the Mighty Garlics a week later. I wonder how many have done the trifecta. WAFL/SANFL/VFL ?

Yeah I was just reading up on Stan Heal cos I saw he played in 2 flags in the same year.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stan_Heal

"The Western Australian spent just one season at Melbourne, who had acquired his services while he was temporarily stationed in Victoria. Despite playing just eight games he was a member of Melbourne's 1941 premiership team. The following week he played in another premiership, back home in Western Australia with West Perth."

Leon Baker had a decent start to senior football didn't he? Debuted 3 months shy of turning 25, and his first 5 years were not too shabby (and in 1980 he played in the South Bunbury premiership team). Essendon were mightly blessed to get such a star.

Can someone confirm his state of birth? Wikipedia says WA, wafl.com.au says Victoria.
