Press Conference after 2 straight losses to the Vultures

Sante: Well it has been dissapointing, but we can't take too much out of it this week as we suffered injuries to Chris Grant and Jamar while Peter Burgoyne has been suspended, with those 3 playing we believe we would have won. Round 1 was a wake up call for the team. We had a good pre season and all, but probably forgot that on game day you have to put in the 100% effort throughout the entire team. This week coming up we play the Tigers who are also struggling at the moment, so it will be a real test as the loser will probably set their sights for the wooden spoon.

The fortnight of trading has ended for 2005 and during this fortnight the Western Vultures acquired some good young players to help the Vultures climb back up the AFL TM Ladder.

The Following were Traded

Matthew Robbins
Daniel Cross
Jordan Russell
Pick 36
Tom Logan
Quentin Lynch
Pick 46
Pick 4
Malcolm Michael
Ben Eckermann

The Following were Acquired

Chris Newman
Shane Tuck
Nathan Bock
Marc Bullen
Daniel Ward
Michael Johnson
Kade Simpson
Brent Stanton
Roger Hayden
Robert Haddrill
Pick 7

It was tough to let go of young superstar Daniel Cross and upcomer Jordan Russell (Our 1st round pick from 2004 Draft) but we believed that Shane Tuck was going to offer us more in the midfield and we were desperate for some KP defenders which we got in Nathan Bock. Trading Pick #4 was something coach, sante was looking to do from the beginning of the trade fortnight as 2005's draft has been earmarked 'weaker' than previous so sante took the chance and traded away Pick #4 for a young star in Brent Stanton and another KP defender in Robert Haddrill (To take Michael's spot) and young small defender Roger Hayden.

The Official Trades

1) Matthew Robbins for Chris Newman
2) Daniel Cross for Shane Tuck
3) Jordan Russell for Nathan Bock
4) Pick 36 for Pick 46, Marc Bullen and Daniel Ward
5) Tom Logan and Quentin Lynch for Kade Simpson
6) Pick 46 for Michael Johnson
7) Pick 4 for Brent Stanton, Roger Hayden and Robert Haddrill
8) Mal Michael and Ben Eckermann for Pick 7

Vultures swoop on young guns
By Kenneth Noisewater, Herald Sun
24/09/05

After a disappointing 2005 season for the Western Vultures, coach, Sante took a very aggresive approach to the trade period. It was quite obvious that the Vultures were in need for some young players to create a group to play as one team for the next 10 or so years and to lead the Vultures to a much waited premiership.

After ending the 2005 season on one solitary win and the wooden spoon, the Vultures needed to take a good, hard look at the list and make the hard changes. They did this by delisting six players. These six were Ben Harrison, Daniel Bandy, Brett Johnson, Ben Haynes, Kyle Archibald and Cameron Hunter.

Once the trade period started, the Vultures got into it straight away by trading for Chris Newman who is set to take a midfield role in 2006 and beyond. It was quite clear from that first trade that the Vultures were looking for young midfielders ready to fire in the next two ir three years. Adding to Chris Newman were, Shane Tuck, Brent Stanton and Kade Simpson who should all feature prominently in the Vultures midfield next year and for years to come. It was also rumoured that they made big plays for Amon Buchanan and Daniel Harris but were unsuccessful in their bids.

We had a brief interview just hours after the trade period ended with coach, Sante of the Western Vultures about his views and opinions on the trade period and how he believes the Vultures went and what the Vulture fans should look forward to in 2006 and beyond.

Kenneth Noisewater: You went in fairly aggresively in the trade period and pulled off some big trades, was that your strategy prior to the trade period?

Sante: Well, we knew the list needed some new life and changes to it, so we targeted the younger midfielders in a hope that we can create a tight group for the next 8 or so years and become a real powerhouse and maybe in the short - term see some finals action if these younger players perform early.

KN: You definately did that. Could you say that currently, the Vultures are in a rebuilding stage and it'll take two to three years to get back to the top?

Sante: Yes, we are rebuilding in a way. However, we still want success in the near future.

KN: You're in the process of rebuilding but you still traded for experienced players such as, Daniel Ward and Robert Haddrill. What was the reasoning behind this?

Sante: You can't take kids out every week and expect them to perform and survive at the highest level. We need the experienced players out there to give the kids direction and leadership out on the field. We also needed some depth after facing a few season ending injuries in 2005, we didn't have the personnel to replace the likes of Darcy and Hudson. Haddrill was added in the deal in which we traded Pick #4 for Stanton, Hayden and Haddrill, who is needed to replace Mal Michael. Mal has talked to us before the trade period and stated that he wanted to be traded so we knew we needed a new Full Back and we already needed a CHB too.

KN: Well, Thankyou for your time Sante and good luck in 2006.

Sante: No worries, it was a pleasure.

Western Vultures Press Conference

Fox Footy News Reporter: The National Australia Bank Draft will be held in the upcoming weeks, what type of players will the Vultures be looking for?

Sante: As we finished 16th and in return received Pick #1 we will go for the best rated player and take whoever that may be with #1. We will probably use Pick #7 to grab a KPP as we need to stock up in that area. Pick #20 is the only other pick we'll use in this years draft because of the list space. Pick #20 will be used depending on what players remain and if we see a potentially good KPP, we will use Pick #20 to take him.

Channel 10 News Reporter: Are you satisfied with the trades completed with the Vultures?

Sante:Yeah, we are fairly happy with the outcome and hopefully it will start to show next year. We went in with a mindset to find some younger midfielders to help out the aging Camporeale, Ricciuto and Vandenberg. We found those with Newman, Tuck, Simpson, Stanton and Bullen.

Channel 10 News Reporter: You said before that you needed KPP, but you opted to trade for gun midfielders instead of the gun KPP, why was that?

Sante: Thats a good question. We do need KPP and we did have the opportunities to get one or two with the low picks we had. We opted to go for young midfielders because we felf that our current midfielders were getting to the end of their careers and the KPP we had were still young enough to be able to draft the young kids and develop them. Its also hard to trade for the gun KPP as they tend to be much more expensive as they are rarely found. Saying that, we did trade for Nathan Bock who is young and had a very good season at CHB.

Vultures outraged at F/S rulings
By Kenneth Noisewater - 30th September 2005

Just a few weeks away from the 2005 National Draft, Brisbane have declared they will be using their 3rd round pick to draft highly talented youngster and possible pick for number one, Marc Murphy. He has been the standout player this year along with Xavier Ellis. Sante, coach of the Vultures said 'They were outraged when it was confirmed that Brisbane declared they'll use the F/S pick to take potential number one pick, Marc Murphy'

Sante also said 'Even though they always had Murphy in mind, they will be satisfied to take Ellis as he is next in line in their opinion'

'It was always going to be out of Murphy or Ellis, we were leaning towards Muphy and today when we heard the news, were in disbelief' said coach, Sante

The Vultures coach said he was also looking forward to the upcoming trade period as the Vultures look to secure some more midfielders who are ready to take the next step in 2006. They also said they will be shopping around for a ready made ruckman and will offer some big name players such as, Jeff White and Peter Burgoyne if the deal is right.

After a heart breaking loss to the Bears in the Elimination final last week, coach sante has already started looking forward into 2007.

Sante has publicly said that they won't be as active in the trade period as previous years as they are quite happy with the young group of players but will listen to all trades as the Vultures try to improve on the very good 2006 campaign.

High profile players such as, Scott Camporeale, Shane Tuck, Peter Burgoyne and Richie Vandenberg will be up for trade.

The Vultures were very happy with 1st year players Dale Thomas and Josh Kennedy's debut years and the improvement from players in Foley, C. McGrath and Pettifer. Sante was also very impressed with first year players for the club in Simpson, Stanton, Tuck and Newman even though he suffered a broken leg.

The Vultures have expressed interest in the following players and would appreciate if the clubs of these players would contact the Vultures about possible trades later in the pre - season.

Vultures on clear path
26/11/06 @ 1.30pm

The Western Vultures after finishing last in 2005 seem to have a direct path into their future. A young talented group with plenty of potential seems to be set for an amazing turn around in 2 years. Coach sante has turned the Vultures over in what will be 2 years in 2007 since finishing 16th in 2005. In 2007 they are expected to be big contenders for the premiership after acquiring Brent Stanton, Trent Hentschel, Shane Tuck, Michael Johnson, Kade Simpson and Chris Newman in the trade period last year as well as receiving Brad Fisher and Jason Winderlich in 2006's trade period.

They have also been very active in the Bidding, which is new to AFLTM, which allows clubs to 'poach' players on one-year contracts. The Vultures who were unsuccessful in getting a trade completed for Jarrad Waite and Mark Nicoski were able to make successful bids to acquire them for 3 and 4 years respectively from WCE along with former Melbourne player Michael Pettigrew on a 3 year contract.

Sante said 'He was ecstatic with the way the Bidding period turned out. We were a little disappointed that WCE didn't want to talk trades for Jarrad and Mark, we expressed a lot of interest and they wouldn't budge.'

‘We only expected to get one of the three. To get all three is just great news for the club. All Vultures supporters should be thrilled with the new acquisitions we’ll have in 2007.’

‘All we have left now is the National Draft and Rookie Draft with our picks in the PSD already determined.'

'We believe Mark (Nicoski) will add that extra run off of HB that we need with Campo (Camporeale) nearing the end of his career, Cory (McGrath) being delisted, Daniel Ward being traded and Newy (Newman) set back with his broken leg. The additions of Jarrad (Waite) and Mike (Pettigrew) to the forward line give us some structure and depth along with Darcy, and Hentschel when he returns in 2008.'

The draft is starting tonight and Sante has publicly announced that they will be drafting the best available talent with each of their picks.

#23 - Shaun Grigg

#60 - Robert Gray

2006 Rookie Draft

Cameron Cloke
Matthew Ferguson

Sante: We believed heading into the 2006 National Draft that we had a list more than capable of playing competitive footy and to make an impression come finals. Our rebuilding phase is well in effect with a lot of young players filling up the team weekly. So our focus in this years draft was to select the best available and players we believed would suit the way we want to play.

Our decision to choose Ricky Dyson at #53 was purely because we believe he has a lot of talent to burn and should find it easy to play his game with us already having similar typed players. We had him on our 'wanted list' but never got round to offering a trade to his former club. Once we heard of his delisting, we quickly put him on our radar for the draft, where we claimed him at pick #53.

After a very disappointing finals series the Vultures went into the off-season looking to add some much needed class around the ground to take the club one step further in 2008.

Coach sante arrived late to the bidding and trading period but didn't take long to get into the swing of things.

Sunday the 4th of Novemeber could be marked as the day which seals the Vultures first ever Premiership in the AFLTM.

The Vultures viciously got into the trading by acquiring superstar midfielders Nick Stevens and Matt Priddis and upcomer Lynden Dunn. Along with the exciting and athletic Full Back in Jason Roe.

Sante while ecstatic at the acquisitions of the 4 above, was feeling sympathetic for the players given up and thanked all for their great services because they all contributed to the recent ressurgence of the Vultures. He also wishes them well at their new clubs and hopes they hold no hard feelings.

Below is an extract of Sante's interview with afl.com.au

"Thats the way footy is these days, you can't get anything unless you give up something in return and unfortunately we had to make some difficult decisions but its all for the good of this footy club"

The Vultures weren't planning to be big traders in the off-season believing that they had a list which needed little attention, but that has since changed as the Vultures have completed 6 trades so far. The most recent was sending tall midfielder Shane Tuck to Mornington in exchange for Draft Pick #9.

Sante had this to say: 'Shane's been a terrific player for us in the midfield for the past 2 years but my whole aim since taking on the job at the Vultures has been to keep the youth flowing through and maintaining a young and exciting side for years to come. I don't want us to have any downfalls in years to come, we want to be successful and play finals footy each and every year.'

'One of the main reasons for us letting him go was to free up some cap space because this time next year, we have a lot of players out of contract and some of those have already had interest from opposition clubs and we see them as required players. We will do anything to retain them and the best way of doing that is by paying them more and we need to match the opposition clubs bids and we're confident that a lot of money will be thrown around by the other clubs. '

'We wish Shane the best at Mornington and we hope he enjoys a great career there.'

Xavier Clarke was also lured to the Vultures through the bidding stage on a new $220, 000 contract for 2 years.

Premiership Window Closed...?

For the first time since the Vultures disappointing end to the 2008 season, coach sante meets the press to discuss his side's future and whether or not the Vultures have the cattle to reach the ultimate glory.

Newsreporter: Obviously, the 2008 season was a disappointing one, what were the expectations leading into 2008?

sante: A big disappointment. 2007 saw us control the entire season and sit clear on the top of the table, only to be trumped in the finals. We believed, heading into 2008 that we were a couple of star players from our first AFLTM Premiership.

Newsreporter: Then what happened? You added players such as, Nick Stevens and Matt Priddis who are two quality midfielders.

sante: Exactly. We thought the Premiership was a great chance. We didn't get ahead of ourselves though and injuries and loss of form to some key older players did hurt us late in the season.

Newsreporter: Have you missed your Premiership chance?

sante: (Laughs) I don't think so. With the bidding system and a lot of new coaches, you will see a lot of changes to teams and with the amount of UC players, you can find some real bargains. We believe, that the disappointment of 2008, will add extra motivation and 2009 will definately be a year where we can challenge. We still have the self-belief gained from 2007.

Newsreporter: You will be losing a lot of experienced players heading into 2009, will that affect your team balance and finals chances?

sante: We've always tried to keep a young list together to ensure we can continue to be successful. We will be losing a few older, more experienced players, but we'll also gain some through the trade/bidding/drafting periods. We believe that some of our younger crop are ready to take the next step, players like Priddis, Stanton and Foley are great people as well as great players and stars of the present and future.

Vultures secure big scoop

Dean Cox, one of the biggest names who came Out of Contract has been scooped up by the Western Vultures. Just hours after Dean Cox and the Rottnest Razorbacks announcing his intentions to leave the club, a trade was struck.

When hearing the news that superstar Dean Cox was looking to leave the Razorbacks, sante jumped at the chance to nab him. Sante had always had his sights set on Cox through the Bidding process and had just about given up any hope of securing the big man's services after peterss has continually matched the bids.

It was only a couple of days ago when Rottnest approached the Vultures to work a deal out for CHB/CHF Jarrad Waite who were in desperate need of a CHB. They couldn't come to an agreement and this also looked destined to fail. When the news broke of Cox's intention to leave, the Vultures were to quick to pounce knowing they had an ace up their sleeve, with the Razorbacks interested and in need of a CHB in Jarrad Waite.

Sante: We knew we were a good chance of getting the best deal to suit our needs and the Razorbacks needs. Waite is an exciting prospect who can play KP Back and Forward. We weren't planning on trading Pick #6 but when the opportunity comes along like it did, we were more than happy to do what was necessary to acquire Dean Cox.

Sante: We are very pleased that the deal was completed and confirmed with no hassles. It gives us plenty of time to focus our attention on other players who we also have a strong interest for.
