Stadium now sold out, Should be the biggest gate for a WCC in a while. As Penrith have had three goes at it, and not won it yet, I'm sure they won't be wanting to make it four in a row. So I'm not overly optimistic, facing the best side in the world. But I hope we can give them a good contest.

Penrith have lost twice in the WCC, and, embarrassingly, lost at home to Saints last year. Do you really think they contemplate a third defeat in a row? I think they'll be taking it plenty seriously.

Wasn't embarrassing for them at all.

It was their first hit out in 4/5 months and they went and won their 3rd straight premiership later that year.

They just don't care.

Yeah, you're right. Probably not worth watching, really.

Wigan getting a fair bit of help at home.
I can’t recall a more biased reffed game.

Even the last call of the try that’s almost always gonna be called try if he stays in bound. The Liam Martin strip, the constant holding in the tackles, the awarded try which was a triple movement. I ******* hate Penrith but they got screwed

Apologies, I was wrong in my earlier post: I said Penrith had already lost in two WCCs. In fact, it was three. So make that four now! :D

Really classy gesture from Nathan Cleary at the end, there. :thumbsupemoji:

Worse than anything I've seen in the NRL and that's saying something.

What a joke. Video Ref screws the Panthers twice....the Wigan try was never a try, never even close to the line, and then at the end, the Panthers player was over the line and more likely to hace gotten the ball down...no try.

Mind you, video ref also screwed Wigan with the offside no try call too
I think the video ref on the last second May try got it right purely because the on field was no try. In any other environment the ref is calling that a try onfield. He got over the line, didn’t go into touch and didn’t have a body under him. The video ref in that one didn’t have a clear angle to overturn so I think did the right thing.

Wigan had a one try from two BLATANT forward passes. Held in the ruck all night and had that Liam Martin one on one strip penalized (which to me was the worst call on field I’ve seen in some time). Add in the other try that was 7 movements and it was horrible and clearly biased.

At the end of the day, Penrith had all the possession and field position, and could only score 12 points. That doesn't win you many games. Not to mention three times the salary cap! English teams have had the rough end of decisions plenty of times in Australia. We have a bloody good side, and we've shown we can mix it with the best.

All fair points, but admitting you got a huge leg up from the ref is ok to acknowledge too.

I think they should have had at least 16 if the ref wasn’t crooked and the conditions looked horrible so that’s not a bad score. Then factor in that Wigan got 8-10 more than the should have and that whole comment is pretty backwards.

No questions the best superleague teams can mix it and even beat the Aussie teams on their day but I’m not sure this game is the one you’d use as evidence.

It helps when you get given points for not even crossing the try line!

Made me feel a lot happier about our officiating over here.

I only watched the game on replay last night and was wondering what the deal is with the escort rule on high kicks is? I swear Wigan kept blocking the kick chaser's run without penalty every time the Panthers kicked on the 5th. Is that only a rule in the NRL?

They talked about playing international rules when the umpire ****ed up on the Liam Martin one on one strip but I’m very confident the escort rule is international.

The refs were just real ******* crooked.

Yeah, escort rule is the same. You don't have to get out of the way, but you cannot change your line to obstruct a runner. I think the Wardle try was dubious, but there is a logic to it going up as a try, as the ref had seen the ball eventually on the line. The question then was, how did it get there? Double movement, or was the ball pushed back by defenders? The May effort came close, but there no sight of the ball reaching the line, and I don't think it ever did. And you have to remember that we had the try of the night from Bevan French narrowly turned down, by technology markedly (regrettably) inferior to that used in the NRL. I've been reading the excellent detailed stats on the NRL site. Wigan way behind on every metric, except, crucially, kick distance and set completion. The conditions and the pitch, BTW, were absolutely fine.

Can’t agree on on the double movement or May tries. You get taken down that far from the line unless you’re tackled from behind no way momentum takes you over. Same with the May try, 95% of refs are calling that a try on field because he stayed in bounds and there is no clear body under him. If it goes up as a try then it stays. Ultimately I think the video ref got that call right as there wasn’t sufficient evidence to overturn (although I still think you can see the ball on the ground in the first sideline angle). Perhaps it’s just a night where Penrith were on the wrong end of a stack of calls but it looks pretty biased from where I sit and i ******* hate Penrith.

I also think the one no one is talking about which was the worst one was the Martin 1 on 1 strip. The ref was 3 metres away and you could see martin telling the others to fall off the tackle. The replay made it look absolutely awful for the ref. If that’s played Wigan are defending their line again from 30m out with 8 minutes to go. Does anyone know why Penrith didn’t challenge that?

Because there's no Captain's Challenge in International rules? (I think). Remember there 's no Captains Challenge in SL either. NRL rules aren't 'the' rules of rugby league, there are just the rules used in your comp.

Anyway, in other news:

Two Wigan Warriors supporters received a classy response from Penrith Panthers after writing to the NRL giants to thank them for the part they played in a memorable World Club Challenge.

Supporters John and Tricia Pattison wrote to the Australian three-peat champions following Saturday’s clash in front of a sell-out crowd, impressed by their dignity in defeat as Wigan claimed a record-equalling fifth World Club Challenge with a 16-12 victory

Superstar Nathan Cleary took his time taking selfies with supporters inside the DW Stadium following the full-time hooter, with the game a major boost for the profile of the sport live on the BBC and Sky Sports.

Replying to the impressed Wigan supporters, Penrith Panthers Rugby League CEO Matt Cameron, wrote: “Firstly, thank you for your kind words about our club and our players and coaches.

One of our aspirational goals at the Panthers is to be a source of community pride so to see our players transfer that passion to your community is something that we really value.

"Although as Panthers we were disappointed with the result, I think rugby league in the UK was the winner on the night.

“I had the opportunity to be on the sideline as last year’s Grand Final kicked off with 85,000 people at ANZ Stadium but it did not compare to the noise that 24,000 Wigan fans made last night and it was something I will never forget.

“Again thanks for your feedback. In the world we live in today, it’s very easy to catch somebody doing the wrong thing so when we catch them doing the right thing, it makes us very proud.”
