WT Races 2013

Tour of Poland has some new rules being trialled this year:

- 6 riders per team
- along with sprint and finish time bonuses, they've introduced a 'race appeal' contest where intermediate + mountain classifications are added up and the winner gets 30 second bonuses, second gets 20 seconds and 3rd gets 10 seconds.

Wouldn't mind the race appeal if they got bonus KOM points or Sprinters points instead.

San Sebastian was last night, wasn't a bad watch.

Movistar blew up the peloton with Quintana on the front setting the pace for his teammate up the second to last climb. That ended up splitting the peloton with groups all over the road before a group of 8 consolidated at the front, Valverde and Kreuziger the two big names in it.

16km left, attacks come from this group of 8. Gallopin is out front, the rest chasing. Valverde in a great position if they can track down the leader.

Gallopin with 25 seconds and 4km to go. Looks like he is home, what a ride and what a move. Valverde in 2nd, Kreuziger in 3rd.

Cheers for the write up mate!

Tour of Poland stage 1:

In Italy for stage 1 (and 2), a nice tough profile to get things going and we'll see how the 'attractiveness bonus' goes, along with 6 riders per team.

~25km to go when we join the telecast, 2 riders (Serge Pauwels, Bartosz Huzarski) up front with 3 minutes in hand. Cannondale setting the pace for the peloton. Poor visuals and lack of timing gaps makes it hard for the commentators and for viewers.

12.1km left and they hit the start of the final climb. Pauwels caught early into the climb. Movement and attacks starting with 9km till the finish.

Nibali dropped, well there you go. Dropped with 8km to go, early in the climb, clearly not giving this tour a really go.

Weening out the front with 5.5km left, the peloton is reducing rapidly and Henao attacking now and lifting the pace.

Wiggins, Nibali and Uran all not in the chasing main group of ~10. Scarpecki, Sorensson have accelerated from that group of 10 and joined Weening up the road now but they don't have a big lead.

It's all tight now, could be anyone's at this point with a couple of kilometres to go.

Weening breaks away again! Final kilometre, doesn't have much of a lead. Weening is caught, it's a group of 15 now. Ulissi from Lampre-Merida gets the best run at the finish line and wins by 3-4 bike lengths.

Basso and Henao get the same time, other big names not even in the top 30.

Nibali in a breakaway with a decent lead as we join the telecast, 46km to go and Riblon up there too in a group of 7.

And... dropped after a short acceleration from the front. And... back 45 seconds later. Clearly Nibali is not in good form or conditioning. Dropped again shortly after.

11.2km left, Paterski attacks and is soon brought back in by the breakaway. 1m50s over the peloton and only 3 leading the everyone now with 8.8km to go.

Riblon attacks from that front 3, Paterski can't stay with him. Eases off then attacks again and he's dislodged the other 2 in the breakaway.

Riblon has gone alone and this looks like a great move. 2m17s over the peloton with 4km left, he's riding strong. And he does it and might get the leaders jersey too - misses out on the leaders jersey by 6 seconds.

Watching it on Eurosport now. Nibali aiming for victory in the Vuelta perhaps?

I explained it above.

Add the intermediate and mountain points together at the end of the day and the leader gets a 30 second bonus, 2nd gets 20 seconds, 3rd gets 30 seconds.
Cheers, missed that. It wasn't appearing on tapatalk.

Watching it on Eurosport now. Nibali aiming for victory in the Vuelta perhaps?
Confirmed in this interview.

Vincenzo Nibali’s travails on the Tour of Poland’s opening weekend in the Dolomites may have provoked some concerned headlines in the Italian sporting press, but the Astana rider is confident that he is on track for his late-season objectives of the Vuelta a España and world championships.

“I’ll see a bit as I go along,” Nibali said, when asked if he will ride the Vuelta to win or simply to prepare for the Worlds. “The objective right now is certainly to get to the Vuelta in good condition and then day by day try to be up there. But if I find I don’t have the right condition, then maybe I’ll start thinking about stage wins instead and building towards the Worlds.”

Thor vs. Renshaw at the end of last nights Tour of Poland stage and Thor gets the sprint. That was a great finish and a superb call from the commentator on Eurosport 2.

Renshaw ever a chance to win a GT sprint do we think?

That was BRILLIANT! Taylor Phinney take a bow.

Try and find vision of the final 10 km of stage 4 of the Tour of Poland guys, Phinney was amazing.

NON GT racing is underrated. He took off at just the right time, BMC are doing well in this tour with Hushovd winning yesterday.

How about that for a stage profile, so many short, sharp and steep climbs.

Pretty entertaining stage, lots of riders attacking and Riblon doing his (now) usual thing.

Atapuma was up front and then made a move just before the small peloton caught him with a couple of kilometres left. Riblon went with him.

Sprint finish between those two with Atapuma refusing to do a turn on the front. Atapuma's acceleration is too good and he gets the win.

Riblon goes into the yellow jersey.

So Arnaud Demare was pretty happy with his win at the London-Surrey Classic yesterday:

Great to see OGE rider Peter Weenign taking out the Tour of Poland, first time a OGE rider has won a European tour?
