I remember chatting to a history professor who told me mytho's of atlantis we're not as epic as most laymen believe.

supposedly there was two saga's that mentioned atlantis, the first was basically a ripoff or some egyptian tales mixed with already existing greek tragedies that plato eventually abandoned. the second second book was more touting his politically and philosophical views, this time drawing on events such as the invasion of the sea peoples and the trojan war and possibly even one of the persian invasions.

plato himself was ridiculed about his whole perfect society, basically because of the first book which stole ideas from well known egyptian stories and even his perfect society was nicked from them. supposedly he rewrote the work to include some alliance between egypt and athens that stood against the great atlantean threat as a way of reconciling the fact that the work was clearly borrowed egyptian myths.

he then tried to use the story to claim athenians once lived under this perfect society and the goal was to rediscover it. Many who attribute atlantis as this great advanced ancient society apparently have never read plato's two stories (or one story and one half assed attempt at at a story) Supposedly the two tales don't say s**t about the power being highly advanced only that it was a world conquering military power that was going about ******* s**t up enslaving people yarda yarda yarda.

then the egyptians, athenians and a bunch of other fought off these ultimate badarses, but it began to crumple after defeats etc, etc. until only the perfect society of athens stood against the tide of evil. blah blah blah in the end the gods intervened and sunk the island for the atlanteans hubris. An important point because the idea of hubris played a large part in many greek myths from various writers.

The point being atlantus was not the advanced superpower its made out to be, in fact the only thing they had were numbers. Supposedly the athenians had better troops and better ships, etc, etc. It was Athens that was the advanced society, Better in every way. Standing against this all conquering enemy because the athenians were a perfect society back then. iI was athens that was the great advanced society not the atlanteans.

Infact in both stories it appears atlantis only existed as a plot device to prove how great platos perfect society was. The idea that atlantis was technologically advanced came later from judeo christian teachings, which have always had a thing about knowledge being bad and dangerous and hence that was the reason they were destroyed by the gods, rather than their attempt to take over the world.
