People saying "Don't cry don't cry put it in perspective, it's not a loss, it's not the end of the world" need to realize it was 2nd vs 17th.

We should have mopped the floor with them. They are the 17th best side in the competition missing arguably their best 4 midfielders.

I expect us to drop a game occasionally sure, it happens. But not THAT game.

Up until the Richmond game, we hadn't really played "bad" all season (apart from the derby). And now our last 3 games have been deadset average. Our form is terrible right now.
I don't know how a 52 point win over a team we haven't beaten in 7 years last week was "deadest average" but obviously I am easily pleased. Some similarly ridiculous amount of time since we beat Collingwood in Melbourne, which we also did in your time frame. I was happy as a pig in mud to get those two games actually.

By your own admission no team is up all season, it's impossible. Does it matter who we lose to? Every loss sucks, no matter who the opposition team is!

I fully expect to lose next week to the Hawks, but am hopeful if we have no further injuries to key players that we can start to put it together again in the four weeks after that going into finals.

We were ordinary against Sydney?

I must have been watching a different game..

Our first 2 and a half quarters were exceptional..

Would love a gif of the mark.

Anyone?

It was a cracking game....just hard to watch because of the number of missed opportunities.

West coast have to make a good go of it this year because these expansion teams are getting a bit scary.

Ps: also glad sinclair seems to be fine. Nearly was sick when there was footage of a eagles player crumpled up in pain.

Flashback to mitch brown.

Thought we really missed McGovern (or heaven forbid McKenzie) last night - that last contest was just one example that should've been killed but we were undersized. Thought the Suns exposed that on numerous occasions.

Sure did, they knew our smaller defenders were going to fly (Shep, Welly etc) and they stayed down and cut us up at the fall of the ball throughout the whole game

Wellingham, Ellis, Sheppard, Hurn were at the last ball drop when Lynch took that mark.

Where were our tall backs in Schofield and Barrass.

One of them HAD to be there instead of the short people.

Leo Barry all over again!

Schofield was standing behind the pack without a man

Hey I agree we were poor tonight, but the defence held up pretty well, except schofield gifting Dixon a goal. We now have to focus on winning at least 4 of the next 5 to lock in a top two. We have to be positive. I think the guys had an off day Simmo will give them swift kick up the backside.

The biggest disappointment was the lack of composure to work through the issues, the amount of blind bombs was pathetic, by players who weren't under pressure and could have used a release handball triangle to goo effect. They just couldn't mentally switch on, they were in this rut of poor play and nobody seemed to change it up.

I thought Priddis was good when the ball was in dispute but besides that, as soon as the ball hit the ground it was all Gold Coast at the feet of the talls.

That last Lynch mark, I could see it happening in slow motion before the bloke even kicked it inside 50. I just expected it to happen given how the night had gone. He then teased me with that set shot, having it on line with the post till the last 5 metres.
Will our team ever learn how to run down the clock? Are they allowed to? We seem to prefer to kick it in to a contest or a pack in most cases, sometimes we get away with it, but last night with only just over a minute to go, surely we can just chip it around to free players instead...

I think they did well kicking to the boundary down the line trying to get a stoppage, only problem was (my memory is hazy) but Gold Coast cleared it or got a free kick didn't they?

Free kick. Hardly surprising.

It's true, if that game against Sydney is not benchmarked as an average performance, we've come a loooooooooooooong way from Round 3.

Let's think about this.

1. We are second on the ladder. On the AFL ****ing ladder. At Round 18.
2. No matter what happens next week, we will still be second on the ladder. SECOND.
3. West Perth are also second, so that's awesome as well.

I saw this too and for the life of me couldn't believe he didn't jump in the air to spoil.

As a team the Eagles were flat last night. Everyone looked tired. There was little run, panic kicking and poor skill errors.

I hope it is a one-off because if we play like that against Hawthorn and Fremantle we will lose by 10 goals.

Feeling better about this game today. We played about as poorly as we could and still salvaged two points. In terms of keeping us in second spot, it's as good as a win. While it's made it harder to get top now, I think that was always unlikely.

The only percentage we were fighting was HAKWS and I really think Hawks percentage will be higher than ours come season end anyways ....

I agree

If some looney (lol) had walked up to me and said hey I reckon west coast will be 13 wins 1 draw and 3 loss after 17 rounds after MICTH and Eric went down I would have looked at him and said .....

Can someone please call the mental asylum as someone has escaped (please this is humour not a go against mental illness)

Our season is in our hands .....

One poor game doesn't make a season and we will come out swinging this week v Hawks

Second on the ladder .....if someone had said hey we'll give you second after 18 rounds this season after eMac and Mitch went down you'd think.........um yeah that would be nice hey

No one ...I repeat no one on this solar system would have predicted us being second on the ladder after 18 rounds and 6 points clear of Hawks .......

Don't cry, don't cry. Put it in perspective, it's not a loss, it's not the end of the world. But hey, I have been accused of being a fanboi.

What the suns game doesn't change is that we win next week and we all but eliminate Hawthorn from the race for Top 2. We will know much more about where we sit in the pecking order after the next two games than what we can take from last nights game.

And for anyone who thinks our form is terrible right now, one game does not represent a form trend no matter how much it fits into your negative world view.

Round 17: West Coast 15.13 defeat Sydney 7.9 (winning margin 52)
Round 16: West Coast 11.21 defeat Collingwood 7.14 (winning margin 31)
Round 15: West Coast 22.15 defeat Adelaide 14.7 (winning margin 56)
Round 14: West Coast 16.18 defeat Melbourne 9.6 (winning margin 54)

It doesn't really matter, if we are to get top 2 we need to win at least one of the next two games and if we don't we don't deserve top 2 and if we lose 3 or 4 of the next 5 games we don't deserve top 4 basically it's still in our hands !!

Was it humid? Boys looked drained as. Long flight doesn't help.

In the training update on the club site, the person they interview (Sheppard IIRC?) was sweating profusely. Quite a lot of sweat for a light training session - humidity must have been a factor.

two things have been grating on the mind since last night:

  • hutchings laughable set shot from 20m that could have iced the game. may as well banish him to the WAFL foor good if thats the best he can muster in such a huge moment.
  • cripps not getting that ball over the boundary line on the wing. such a basic thing and such a massively costly error. deserves the mother of all rockets for that garbage effort.

Nicholls deserves a lot of credit for nullifying Nicnat's influence for a lot of the game. Not letting him get clean hands to it played a huge part in shutting down our mid spread in general. Positive: not sure that Hawks have a ruck who can do the same job.

Sydney are still a massive chance to go past if we drop 3, which is possible. They have the absolute easiest draw in history on the run home.
Would rather a tough draw in the build up to finals, freo had an easy final run last year and they went out in straight sets
