After the summer break, the eleventh GP of the year takes us to Spa for the Belgian Grand Prix.

Lewis Hamilton takes us through a lap of the circuit on the Red Bull simulator:

Spa is one of the classic race venues in the world and is a fast flowing circuit with a couple of tight sections, notably in sector 1 and some pretty big elevation changes. The circuit features the famous Eau Rouge section, which is one of the most challenging pieces of race track on the calendar. The track is a definite favourite with both the drivers and Formula 1 fans.

Drivers Championship

Vettel's win in Hungary puts him surprisingly close to Nico Rosberg in 2nd spot in the Championship and Spa will be an important guide to see if Ferrari can compete on the fast tracks.

The tyre choices at Belgium will be the medium and soft compounds.

The development of the Honda engine continues with more engine tokens being deployed at Spa for the McLaren team. Mercedes are also rumoured to be ready to upgrade their engines as well, but the rollout of their upgrades is much more likely to be determined by the need to replace old engines rather than at a particular track. Renault are reportedly not ready to deploy engine upgrades at Spa and we'll have to wait for later in the season for any signs of increased power from Renault.

The good news for those without Foxtel is that the Belgium Grand Prix will be telecast on Sunday night on Channel 10/OneHD.

Spa often produces good races so I'm looking forward to this one. Eau Rouge is a great corner and I love seeing cars stream through it.

Looking forward to seeing how the new race start rules affect the drivers. Lewis seems to be against them so sounds like he is worried.

You've got to love Formula 1 and the teams abilities to bend the rules to suit themselves....

McLaren plan to do a double engine change in its two cars ahead of the Belgian Grand Prix this weekend, after it was hit with grid penalties for Fernando Alonso and Jenson Button for introducing a seventh engine for Spa, using three development tokens, this morning.
With its drivers set to start the race at Spa at the rear of the field anyway thanks to the first penalty, McLaren will trigger a second penalty by again changing engines after FP2. The second penalty will be redundant, but it is a clever plan to expand the pool of race engines it has available for the rest of the season.
The move comes after the clarification by the FIA last month over engine penalties and despite a rule change that allowed Honda to run a sixth “free” engine without penalty. the team received 50 places worth of grid demotions for running a fifth engine of the year at the Austrian Grand Prix. McLaren’s decision is completely legal in the regulations, but could be considered a slightly cynical ploy.

As stated in the quote, the planned engine change has nothing to do with the health of the engines, just the number of engines in the pool for McLaren to use. The rules were changed so that the maximum penalty any team can accumulate in a given race is starting at the back of the grid and McLaren will use that rule change to its maximum.
