Autopsy De-Pendlebury: Will the man ever fetch a Brownlow?

I genuinely don't care.

The umpires have proven to be such poor judges (for example their lack of understanding of the impact of elite KPPs) that they've robbed the medal of some of its respectability.

Take it off the umpires and I might care.

Would he be a worthy winner? Absolutely, he's been in the top 5 players in the AFL for several years.

I 100% Agree with that. I no long rate the Brownlow. The Players and Coaches awards are More Important then the Brownlow

The Brownlow is a financial windfall for any player that wins it.
I believe the players themselves prefer the AFLPA MVP though. Nothing better than being judged by your peers as the MVP of the season.
Pretty sure Pendles doesn't need the financial benifits of a Brownlow.
He does however need more Premiership medallions.

Interesting concept.

But my only issue here is if we remove umpires voting then media types I assume will do this voting.
Then they start voting for their types and I'm less impressed with
Wilson, Robinson, Smith et al than unknown umpires.
But that's just me.

I believe the Dally M in rugby league is media in part so it trends to the big players in the game as opposed to one off great seasons.
But that's just my feeling, could be wrong.

In this scenario woewodin doesn't win a Brownlow or Brian Wilson.
Hang on a minute, I've just defeated my argument

I'm sure we could come up with a good alternative system if we really wanted one. Just don't let John Howard near the selection process!

Call it a personal dislike, but I'm not a fan of the fact that our highest individual honour is voted on by people who just spent the entire game officiating it, not "watching" it. They are two very different acts. Add to this that they have no opportunity to watch any recorded vision of the game; they just discuss and vote.

Gross generalisation here I know, but many umpires are also failed/retired mids. Not too many 6'4" 105kg umpires at AFL level.

No me gusta.

How is what I said an attack?I called bs and think it's a ridiculous to suggest he isn't good enough, hardly a personal attack

Saying that it's the worst post I ever done. That is De-Grading

Just calling it as I see it.
Not meaning to be degrading to you as a person but I totally disagree with your opinion and think its foolish to say pendleburys style is not good enough to win a brownlow.
I'd happily settle for pendles to become a premiership winning captain than a brownlow medelist anyway!

hope he does, but I don't think he will. having swan in the same time will always hurt his chances
to win one. umps are human like the rest of us, some one like swan and ablett getting 40 plus
touches a game are just more noticeable than 30 great touches by our captain

If you don't think calling someone's post is dumb and one of the 'dumbest things' they've ever written is a personal attack, then we might well be speaking a different language.

John Howard the actor? Poor actor and even in the club wasn't much chop

It's really not your argument to have so I'm not going to bother discussing it any further with you

Apologies, thought this was one of those forums where people proffer many and varied opinions and thoughts among others. Turns out you were just having a private conversation; sorry to intrude.

TD you take things to personal. Its just a discussion, People aren't always going to have the same opinions.

I don't think he's got a problem with people disagreeing with his opinion, and you're misreading his angst to suggest otherwise. He's got a problem with people being insulting in disagreeing with his opinion, which is a perfectly valid gripe.

Insulting. Come off it, It wasn't even that insulting.

It was insulting. It's really difficult to respond to a post like yours without also being insulting, but let me at least point out that your own post acknowledges that it was insulting. The bolded bit is the key.

Pendlebury is like the Andres Iniesta of the AFL. Overlooked and understated brilliance that is overshadowed by flashier players on the end of the work.

He will win more Copelands - that's nice

Is there a year that people think he should have won it?

Think it is be perfectly understandable for ablett to move as favourite with fyfe's injury. Those two have shown when fit that they are the clear two best midfielders in the comp, pendles is in the top three to five group. Swan was either top mid or second when he was tearing it up.

Playing style amongst winners obviously varies (though i don't think anyone said it wasn't good enough just that it didn't lend itself to winning brownlows). pendles style brings everyone else into the game moreso than other midfielders, his ability to create space and release teammates with vision and timing is second to none, when he plays well so do others and that could see votes taken off him.

Maybe, maybe not. Mitchell won't win one and whilst he's never been even close to the outright best player in a single season IMO he's certainly been one of the best and most consistent midfielders over the last 10 years. I think Pendlebury is decisively better but he could easily fall to the same fate.

Is this some kind of sick joke? That is absolutely not the reason, Pendles is an absolute Rolls Royce and definitely does take the game on.

Of course he takes the game on, just not in the bursting out of packs with absolute speed in the way Fyfe, Swan and Ablett do.

Will forever be in the mix as someone who consistently plays at a high level. Simon Black won a Brownlow as a similarly unassuming player, I don't see why Pendles can't if the chips fall his way.
Black or Richo should have Cooney's medal.

How the **** people give Woewodin so much stick when Cooney was ten times worse as an undeserving winner I'll never understand.

I don't recall Dave ever saying that.
The fact of the matter is the premise of his post is still wrong. If the umpires hadn't massively over corrected for their **** up in 2010 of Judd over Swan, Pendles would have won 2011. Similarly Simon Black has won one with similar traits.

Pendles doesn't miss out because of his game style, he misses because of pre-conceived expectations.

TBH I think that's exactly why he hasn't won a Brownlow. In 2012 and 13 Swan was better then him IMO and in the last to years he hasn't had the midfield help.

I think this year is his best chance with Swan's slight decline still playing good footy but has gone behind Pendlebury, and with the addition of Treloar who'll help take the load off the midfield.
