Koch slams Kennett over pokies

Aren't Port sponsored by West End? Alcohol destroys a lot more lives than poker machines.

I believe they are also sponsored by UBET. Not that Port profits from gambling of course, because as we know, they don't really make a profit from anything.

Their website also lists one of their partners as Adelaide Casino. Hypocrisy or just very selective morals Kochie?

Koch just needs to win a golf bet with a state premier to shamelessly take funds for a rich football club from people of a state who need it more.

And McDonalds, Port helping give over 1million Australians diabetes.

It was Kennet who legalised pokies in Victoria putting a curse on communities who could ill afford to have such a blight available to them.
They always attract the people who should avoid them most, the poor.
Kennet knew this yet decided it would be good, net result is a burden on the community.

Kirner actually; Kennett just oversaw the expansion.

I believe the rationale was there were all these bus tours going to the murray to play pokies.

No, it was the Kirner Labor Government which legislated pokies into Victoria in 1991. Kennett became Premier in October 1992. The State was an economic basket case by 1991, and the Government could not resist the easy money from pokies.

I'd rather the footy clubs make the money than other companies or individuals - at least whilst they keep churning out the same returns.

Time to change the laws at state level. Reduce the number allowed at any venue and dismantled the 'pokie barn' venues. Maybe cap it at a dozen machines per pub, if you want to go somewhere and give all your money away then make it somewhere the staff know your name. In time the machines might become illegal but I wouldn't rush to do that.

That would be a nice way to drastically slash the profitability of a lot of the venues that AFL clubs run. The smart clubs would see the writing on the wall and sell up ahead of time.

As a neutral I think they both make fair points.

Kennetts points about Victorian clubs not being able to support themselves is spot on. Relying on the AFL and other clubs to support them is wrong.. Looking 100 years in to the future you can't sustain that many Victorian clubs if they can't sustain themselves. And If they can't support themselves financially they shouldn't exist.

While kochies point is spot on as well about clubs using pokies to prop themselves up clearly not being right as well.

As far as the china stuff, I dunno. Hawthorn sell games to Tasmania as well, is that really that different?

Would be interesting to see last year's revenue without pokies. West Coast are a behemoth, license to print money.

So minnow clubs with massive debts having a whinge when they're told they have s**t finical management skills.
We almost absorbed your club in the 1990s due to ‘s**t finical management’ (sic). That the Hawks turned it around speaks volumes to the strength of your club and supporters, but it’s worth remembering these things before potting other ‘minnow’ clubs which may be having financial issues.

They're all wrong. Pokies, betting, the raping of Tassie football and pointless overseas junkets are all indefensible.

Pleasing to see the Tigers are on the right side of the ledger.

Collingwood from time immemorial ran off gambling, but what is Hawthorns excuse? After Melb their fan base has the highest net worth- One fan recently shouted them 10 mill towards the freehold at Dingley!

One of the toffee clubs should not be so high on that list, Pretty shameful. Hawks Should be fundraising at Raheen, not the western suburbs.

It's ok - pokie machines were invented to reduce the amount of inferior humans in the world.

They are like a vacuum cleaner but better because they make money you see :)

Jokes aside Koch is an extremely annoying dim wit. He should be banned from ever being within 10 KMs of a tv stuido or any kind of microphone.

Kennett can also be annoying but he has an upside and it isn't always about his own agenda. He does have some principles.

PS didn't Kochi try really hard to implement pokies at Port Adelaide but the rank and file fans couldn't figure out how to use them?

Kosh has a go at Hawthorn for the pokies, but says nothing about governments that allows them.

As a club president, Kosh should know better. The AFL are trying to financial weaken the clubs. They have been doing it decades. So, what does Kosh do, he wants hawthorn to become weak as well. How does that help the clubs fight against the AFL? Really disappointed in him.

Koch mentioned pokies, but I reality his main point is being somewhat missed.

Some clubs make a lot of money out of pokies, others clubs can’t, and these clubs have to find revenue somewhere.

Some in this thread have suggested port are struggling financially, when in truth they are back in the black and eating away at debt - as per past few years profits, and the money made out of China is part of it.

Fundamentally Koch’s point is that if clubs can pull revenue from other sources, why should Kennett have an issue.

Kennett claimed playing oversees is a waste of time and money, however if clubs are making money by doing it, then how is it a waste of money ?

Koch head should shut the F up and concentrate on selling his club to China and being a twat on morning tele.

Its up to the family club how it wants to run its club.
If they want to make money from pokies or sell hats that up to them.
