I tend to feel we could've got more than Pick 42 for a state league player (Fritsch 31 last year? Ryan 26, Kelly 24) so was hoping for a pick in the 30's.

That being said, as long as SOS has a use for it soon (which I am sure he does) then all good.... And we got the pick for "free" I guess anyway!

My guess was the 2 senior players we got from the special assistance would be worth roughly picks 25 and 40. On the AFL Draft Index value (one measure only) that translates roughly to pick 14 equivalent. So if McAdam is worth circa pick 25, the special assistance is roughly enough to get McGovern, but the deal was made more complicated. So pick 42 is ok, SOS, get to work on trading McAdam, and we'll have our deal with ADE.

42 is definitely part of the big picture. I have little doubt on that. SOS does these deals for a reason.

It will form part of a deal for Shiel Setterfield or McGovern that will allow us to secure the others.

Considering how we only got these Picks 2 weeks ago its well done

My ITK Hawks person (former board member) says if Carlton gets Russell we also get Shiel. If Hawks convince Russell to stay then Shiel is Hawks bound. Confirmed their meeting this afternoon.

"Increased career prospects" for Russell that are not available to him at Hawthorn is the reason why he's excited to join Carlton.

Many of you guys next to relax, surely SOS made this trade for a specific reason.

No list manager, not SOS or anyone else is going to make that kind of a trade on the very first day of trade week unless there is a specific reason behind it, a bigger picture that this trade achieves.

Our fallback position has always been that if the horrible happens and everything goes wrong and we get no players this trade period, then we can fall back on our 2 state league selections to fill in the gaps.
The fact we traded one out on first day for seemingly a bad pick indicates to me it’s a bigger goal in kind that this trade will achieve.
