Close to Clunes - Mad Max territory.

Used to shoot king/eastern brown and rabbits out past clunes ….. cant remember what it was called, old man took me out there … had a massive old wooden rail bridge cutting through a sharp gully … with a concrete causeway for the road running underneath it ….. was about 20-30 minutes drive from clunes don't know which direction though ….

Senile brain saying from Creswick into Clunes we turned right just before the township …. taloorook??? something like that?

Andy Maher is an idiot.

First he says Andrew Russell coming to us may have been payback for us "helping" Hawthorn in the Omeara deal.

Now he apparently says the AFL pushed Shiel to Essendon instead of us.

Andy Maher is an idiot with a microphone.
I’d rather Andy in our corner than someone like slobbo..

So I log in and read some tripe about an AFL conspiracy that they stopped Dylan Shiel going to Carlton.
Ok. Let's break this down a bit and look at now this could happen.
Firstly, let's look at how many people need to 'kept quiet' about this
There's Dylan himself and the Management team representing him.. let's say 4-5 people. Then there is Dylan's 'dyed in the wool Blue' family.. hmmm another 5-8 people. Then there are the Giants who apparently wanted to deal with Carlton, another dozen or so.
Then there is SOS and his team. The same SOS who stares down all other recruiters and takes no shit from anyone... except the AFL so it seems. About another 15 staff.

So I make that around 40 people who would KNOW and not one whistleblower amongst them.

Didn't a scientist at one point work out an equation, relating to the amount of conspirators and how quickly the conspiracy would unravel?

We don't need no Shiel.

As SOS said, we will draft someone better than Shiel with the pick we offered up (1st round 2019).

Folks, GWS pushed Shiel out, he was expendable to them. Not sweating missing out, a fit Setterfield will be a star that shines brighter anyway.

Well said dlb99, our future 1st may well be a Rowell or Anderson Serong exciting and very talented midfielders for at least another decade where as Shiel will slow down in 3 to 4 years.
A midfield of Dow, Walsh, Setterfield , SPS, O'Brien and Rowell would be unstoppable in 2 to 3 years time.

No - way too many warning bells on this one to burn Pick 1.
What if additional picks come back to us as part of the deal, to help us get into 2nd and or 3rd round/s this year. Would you still feel the same?

The AFL may well have preferred Shiel go to the Bombers but probably because that's what GWS wanted. Just because people hold the same views doesn't make it a conspiracy.
This story can be believed a number of ways of playing out, I tend to believe Shiel went where GWS needed him to go and get best deal. His first priority was getting to live back in Melbourne. Which exact club he went to was more third priority between himself and GWS. I reckon they let him get it down to 3 or 4 clubs and then they made the choice for best trade deal and once they informed him he then allowed to name that club as "him nominating". Or he genuinely did just pick where he thought he could be in a grand final sooner.

Just went for a beach walk myself, had a listen to Macquarie Sports along the way.

Not sure who was talking but he was saying that both GWS AND GCS having salary cap issues because of the big contracts they have to offer players just to retain them.

GWS clearing the decks to ease the issue, but apart from Tom Lynch, GCS haven't seemed to offloaded much. Maybe Scrimshaw to Dawks. If the Hogan deal falls through which means May potentially staying at the Suns another year, will they need to jettison a few others in the trade period?

I got no idea, but would like to think it could open up the door for a deal for Martin :thumbsu:

Shiel went to Essendon because he rates their list better than ours, Saints and Hawks. Not because they were the best for GWS to deal with.

FWIW, the Saints would've been the best for them to deal with as they would've coughed up pick #4 and paid him more than the others.

Imagine this, alot to play out, and i mean alot, but if the Adelaide clubs keep fighting for the first pick in the draft it could be possible, but more a best case scenario;

Adelaide trade 8, 16 (maybe future 3rd?) to St Kilda for pick 4

Port trade 6, 15 (assuming it gets to port) to Gold Coast for pick 3, 29

Adelaide trade 4, 13 to gold coast for pick 2 (pick 19 or 24 back?)

Port trade pick 3, 10 to Carlton for pick 1 and (future 3rd rounder?)

(last trade depends how bad port want Lukosius, or if theyre content with Rankine/Hately with picks 3,10.. maybe we up the offer, or accept 29 instead of 10 knowing Walsh still gets through)
----------------------------------------

Adelaide out 8, 13, 16, future 3rd rounder
in pick 2, 19

Port out 6, 10, 15
in pick 1, future 3rd rounder, 29

gold coast out 2, 3, 19, 29
in pick 6, 4, 15, 13

carlton out 1, future 3rd rounder
in pick 3, 10

St Kilda out 4
in 8, 16, future 3rd rounder
---------------------------------------

not sure its possible as these pick swaps most likely wont happen till late and therefor may run out of time, but imagine we still get out man Walsh, Adelaide clubs get there men and St Kilda and Gold Coast strengthen there hands getting more first round picks, but also Gold Coast may already be thinking of taking Smith/King so they still get there man aswell..

Works for me....
Take Walsh and ??? at 10, or use 10 to get 1 or 2 x 22-26y olds.....
Next few days will be intense....

Noticed further media comment today on Dayne Beams.
If Beams wants to come back to Vic, there's no way Pies can afford both him and May.
AFL would prefer he went to a bottom club rather than the runner up.
Something involving next years first might be worthy of consideration by all stakeholders; including AFL.
Not for beams, too old thanks
