They’re re-setting the club again. Development & retention likely a WIP as well with new programs. Perhaps they’re gearing up for this for superior results but may be better suited from next year with the potential cattle and club environment improvement. Academy players are a priority ATM for ease of retention (but then cop a slap in the face with Scott choosing NMFC for the F/S).
Walsh sounds ideal as you say.

The state leaguers help with maturity & a will to play AFL / embrace GCFC opportunity, plus the older heads from other clubs.
a) Corbett + Burgess + Collins
b) Miles + C.Ellis (+ GHS + Hombsch +?)
A bit of the Brisbane Bears with the player movement north.

Yeah they are in a really tight spot. It is hard for them to "make the right decisions". Danger lurks around most corners.

I believe Sam Walsh is the best damn thing they could possibly do. Whether we sell the rights to him is another matter. But i can see GC coming real hard for him imo.

Those deranged bogans can say whatever they like. They're scum. To go there as a carlton supporter, when we are on our knees tell us everything we need to know about the bloke

It really does tell us nothing, he is a professional footballer and rightly or wrongly made a decision based upon what he felt was better for his career.

Pretty sure that if you go into points deficit for the following year's draft, the points come off your first selection ie your first pick gets pushed back x picks to make up for the points.

OK I have just done some homework. The deficit does not impact your future 1st round pick. The AFL have a complex formula that will generally take the points in the future corresponding round. So if we went into deficit from a 3rd round F/S bid they would take the points from a future 3rd round pick

Laughable that GCS would bank on Walsh’s comments (even us) that he’ll stay at the club that drafts him. What else is he to say? Plus the added bonus and higher base salary of being the number 1 pick (nab usually gives them $20k)... whoever drafts him and don’t improve within 5 years.. he’ll be fair game.

You serious? This is me in this thread...

And all that does is keep me in a perpetual state of 10-20 pages behind.

You even used my welcome mat idea before I had the chance to roll it out. Grrrr

Though you can’t take it as gospel, it’s at least intent of his personality (which if he excels would be reciprocated).

Interesting.

Would love for SOS to pull that off. Would be massive if we could add both Walsh and Smith this year.

It will then be all about team cohesion and just letting them all play together.

How would this work-

Carlton- 2019 first and Casboult
Gc - pick 2

Carlton- pick 2, 2019 3rd round pick
Adelaide - pick 8, pick 16, 2019 2nd round

Net out- 2019 first and third, casboult
In- pick 8, pick 16, 2019 2nd round

How bout just going with pick 2 to Port Adelaide and getting their 6 and 10...straight swap ??

They don't have a second round. Pick 34 this year and 9 won't get it done. 2nd next has been traded for Saad last year.

IMO, Shiel is worth slightly more than a mid 1st & 2nd. So think they will have to give up this pick 9 and next year's 1st, with say pick 25 coming back, plus exchanging some later picks

Not that it matters because * will get the deal done. But we would definitely take Shiel if he wanted us at the 11th hour. Here’s why:

1) Club loyalty (especially supporting as a kid) is non-existent in modern day AFL. Goddard should have taught us that. Players only look at what suits their career as it’s a business decision. This was even admitted by Docherty early days before he realized it was smarter to play the loyalty card with supporters. Still love the bloke though.

2) It’s more about whether the player is committed to the club long term, so if Shiel hypothetically convinced SOS he was then no problem. * did not rate him as much as he thought. If it was GWS pushing for a better deal then SOS would not go there IMO.

3) Shiel is an absolute class player who would make us more competitive immediately and help us push up the ladder providing a good role model for our kids and making Carlton a more attractive destination for future trades.

We would be stupid to knock him back at the detriment of our club success, ie it’s a business decision.

FWIW we will 99% not have to worry about this because * are not that stupid.... then again they did inject players and lied for 2 years keeping a criminal for a coach

So if we get rid of the first next year, we can then take all f/s at whatever pick they get bod on with no recriminations for Carlton?

Be funny if true....

IIRC, not quite the way it works.

Say we are left with only pick 1 this year and a bid comes for Hichmott at pick 45 (3rd rounder), we can then use a pick from the 3rd/4th round next year. Our 1st next year remains as is.
