There is good sense to this.Perhaps the warmer weather could help with Freeman's injuries too? Doesn't have to do recovery in those crazy Melbourne winters!
Most of these guys only do 1 or 2 courses a year. Jesse just did a first year business course earlier this year. What SandyToes and I agreed on was that it should reflect a player's first contract. What does Max Spencer do now? I presume he hasn't finished Uni or got a trade yet, but with a 4 year contract he might have finished and potentially he ready for life after AFL footy. Do you know if Jesse Lonergan completed a qualification? I bet nobody told him he'd be without a club after 6 years when he was drafted in the first round.
I'm not at all surprised that players at the club are studying, but compared with the Swans and GWS we're not as integrated with a University as them. The Swans had 3 U19 Academy players sign up with Sydney Uni's NEAFL team this week and GWS have Academy players in UWS and Canberra Demons. Perhaps the Suns Academy should be doing something with graduating 19 years olds overlooked in two National Drafts by enrolling them at Griffith and signing with Southport to ensure they can continue playing NEAFL and getting an education - of course those who aren't selected at NEAFL level would revert to their original QAFL club.
Maybe Jesse will end up being a player scout or player agent? I bet he's seen Moneyball a few times too. Most of these guys only do 1 or 2 courses a year. Jesse just did a first year business course earlier this year.
FYI Tom wasn't very far through his studies either but it didn't stop him
Unless he majorly improved which is highly unlikely he would draw the lowest possible compoJordan Murdoch has completed 7 seasons on Geelong's list, but because he was delisted he is now an Unrestricted Free Agent. I mention this because my reading of the rules is that Murdoch becomes a non-free agent for the duration of his contract until he has reached 10 years of total service, thus a 3 year deal is what the media interpret the Suns will use to lure Murdoch to the Gold Coast and keep him here. A 1 year contract isn't really feasible and nobody expects 4 years, so it will be either 2 or 3 years. If it is 2 years and he wants out then he can walk with no compo at the end of 2020 as an Unrestricted Free Agent.
I realise this sounds a bit obvious, but given Sam McClure is just speculating it is worth going thought process. The same Sam McClure who declared on Trade Radio last month that contracts are meaningless. I will also add that in researching the legal precedent we can blame Nick Stevens, Chris Judd, Ryan O'Keefe, Luke Ball, GWS and the Gold Coast Suns for giving the AFL Players Association enough contractual ammo to force restriction of trade bullshit onto the CBA.
Whitecross wasn't interested in usyou would think a Whitecross or Cheney down back would be a better bet than Rischa going round another year or Leslie - I know Whitecross has done a deal to go to Norf coaching and playing VFL but thought he had a year or two left in him
thought he was going to be a lock for The Lions with Fagan connection and being a Brisbane guy, obviously has coaching ambitions and wants to stay in VicWhitecross wasn't interested in us
Maybe Jesse will end up being a player scout or player agent? I bet he's seen Moneyball a few times too.
Doesn't surprise me about Tom. I actually wonder if any of the wantaways studied? If they didn't, why not and would it have been less isolating?
He’s been a really good home & away player and just struggles a bit with the extra heat that finals bring. He’s played in 4-5 different finals series but with the Cats getting knocked out of each one, his finals games are magnified. If Murdoch wants to pull on a Sun's guernsey then welcome aboard. Much better clubman than Aaron Hall and fits our lists needs better than Jesse Lonergan. At this point if the club has managed to get a player in from another club on reasonable money I'll call that a win
No, I'm suggesting that management may actually rate him as a player and want to have control over how long he plays for us and how much he gets. If he played 2 seasons and made the top 10 in the B&F both years, suddenly his salary demands would go up for the 3rd year if he wasn't contracted. Alternatively, if he's hot garbage he can be farmed out to the Rookie list. Remember that the 3 year figure is according to Sam McClure and that he is the only journo running with the story.Unless he majorly improved which is highly unlikely he would draw the lowest possible compo
If he walked out
. Surely were not giving him an extra year just so we could get a ?4th round pick for him in 2021 if he leaves
Oh, and he's a South Australian. Giddy up!
Draftees aren't all upside - and most won't make it anywhere near achieving the potential they have. The upside of any draftee would be better.
Huge pass
Murdoch is a known quantity. He’s a massive downhill skier and he butchers the ball a lot. We aren’t going to improve with him in the team, and if he’s going to play NEAFL then I’d rather have a draftee who at least has development potential to be better.Draftees aren't all upside - and most won't make it anywhere near achieving the potential they have.
Unless this is the first year in history that all 18 year olds have elite attributes, no downside, mature bodies and the fortitude required to play over 100 games of AFL, then Im much happier picking up DFAs that are ready to play and know themselves and how they can contribute to our club.
