I found it a bit odd we didn't test a little more in the JLT like Gibbons in the middle, Cas getting a run in the forward line especially after C Curnow had a bit of a knock in JLT 1.

Would have been nice to see a little more variety, but I guess we need the team to gel also.

This.

Tigers stripped back every area of the club, membership, recruiting, drafting, development, then built belief, continuity, cohesion

In the fullness of time

Well said Arr0w! I know they placed a lot of creed in the book by an ex Atlanta Falcons coach. It’s called “You Win in the Locker Room First.” The primary message of the book is that you focus on the process, not the outcomes (wins and losses). I listen to people at our club talk, and I’m very positive that we are following a similar path. But we are still a few years behind. For anyone who hasn’t read the book, it’s a pretty easy and interesting read.

This.

Round 4+ when all clubs have settled down and adjusted, you'd think this match would be close to a foregone conclusion (as much as any are), but with the chaos and unknowns of round 1, there is a much greater chance of an upset.

I'd also add that the uncertainty over Richmond's forward line would also be working in your favor. Caddy & Castagna out, Lynch maybe a 50/50 (and never having played for us, so what he'll contribute is a maybe as well) and even Jack being only a probable starter (his Mrs is due around that day). A forward/Ruck contingent of (probably 3 out of) Nankervis, Soldo, Balta & Moore wouldn't exactly strike terror into oppositions, and whatever we do field is unlikely to work as a unit all that well.

That said, the talk in this thread about your forwards dominating seems unlikely to me, given the Richmond back line would be pretty settled has has looked solid enough during the pre season. (basically, the reverse of our forward line issues).
We know Charlie can play, McKay has proven himself no second fiddle this preseason and the later stage of last year, and Cunningham steped up this JLT in a big way also. Fasolo and McGovern have shown X-Factor. Although we might be coming off a bit excited we finally have a forward line to get excited about.

I have Garlett, Polson and O'Brian fighting it out for the last spot on the bench, who wins that battle???
in order
garlett
lob
polson
think garlett has done enough

I don't think Polson has shown absolutely anything in his time at the club. I think Garlett plays but would prefer L'OB, he links up well, beautiful kick and has absolutely no issues running hard for 4 quarters.

Polson plays a roll. It's not all about stats, or eye popping skills.

I'd be very surprised if he didn't play round 1.

I know he plays a role but the only thing he can do is apply pressure. He does nothing when we have the ball. We've got serious issues if he's in our best 22.

Agree I’d prefer LOB over J. Garlett too but the skinny youngester can find some form in a stronger 2nds allowing him to develop better without much damage.
Jarod Garlett wins the position over the 3 because at the MCG space and atmosphere he’ll do well, has the ability some speed and can go forward too.

Polson will need to show he can grow his game over time, no doubt. But they’ll play him for at least the first 2-3 games imo. If he continues to do what is asked of him he’ll continue to play.

I'd have Gibbons, Cuningham both ahead of him and if Fasolo is fit I'd have him ahead as well. All three of them have shown an ability to hit the scoreboard, which one would you eave out? Probably Fas?

Not true.

He doesn't do much when we have the ball.

Has been involved in a few nice passages of play, and had a really strong game late last year.

The challenge for him is that with so many talented, high draft pick midfielders in the squad, he's pushing the proverbial uphill to get an opportunity in his preferred position ahead of them.

Instead, he's needing to try and fill a niche role as a small pressure forward just to keep his career afloat.

Wouldn't be surprised if he's one of those players that lands somewhere like Gold Coast or St Kilda in the next few years, chasing greater opportunity.

Going to be fun getting the popcorn out when Polson is in the line-up.

He obviously does something right.

Cuningham definitely plays. Fasolo could benefit from another run in the VFL, but is a definite chance. Gibbons misses for my money.

ps: huge lob fan but need to be placated with regard to cam_po................placate me at once, ffs.............

Polson did a lot right last year, not sure he did enough in the JLT though. Think the last two spots in the forward line are out of Polson, Gibbons and Fasolo. I don't think any other forwards are much of a chance at the moment. Silvagni only a slight chance as a forward.

Garlett plays for mine, he's a part of the back 7 at the moment, I don't think we have any other defenders fit and pushing real hard to shift him or any of the others out just yet. We're fine for talls, Schumacher hasn't done enough yet, O'Brien is not a defender, Docherty is out, Williamson and Marchbank are a little while away as is Macreadie.

I think the midfield is set. Silvagni, O'Brien and Kennedy are the other options in reserve and I don't think they push any of those 8 out. Stocker is still a bit raw and Lang is a while away. That midfield worked all right in the JLT. It will be good to see it gain some continuity.

7 forwards, 7 defenders and 8 midfielders sounds a good structure that I think we will go with. Obviously have a few who will play part time in other positions to get the rotations right but everyone will have their main area of the ground that they play.

Defenders
Jones Weitering Plowman Simpson Thomas Garlett Newman

Forwards
Curnow McGovern McKay Cuningham Gibbons Fasolo

Midfield
Phillips Cripps SPS Murphy Curnow Walsh Fisher Dow

Structure is one of the areas where I think we have improved a lot as well as built a little more quality depth in the side.
