I would not be shocked if Martin chose the Dogs. They seem like a good fit for him and if the money is on the table who could blame him? I genuinely think this is a 50/50 one and am not quite sure how it will turn out. If Papley is off the cards we much offer a bit more coin. If we can get Papley, which I think is unlikely, then he is Bulldogs bound. Will be interesting to watch how this one played out.

On Tomlinson, I dont see why we wouldn't put an offer for him. I acknowledge he is not a world beater but he is a more than handy footballer who can play multiple positions. I think he could make a solid contribution especially if we get some injuries in the forward or back line. He is a free hit so might as well stock up on AFL quality footballers which he clearly is

We don’t need a guy who can be a B+ player in multiple positions especially given the talls we have. Rather spend the money elsewhere.

What are you referring to?
Did Brisbane show the dangers of rising too high too early? Would 5th and a win be better than 2nd and a possible straight sets exit?

I would say no, we will see how they go next week, a little too early to write them off, Brisbane had a soft draw and their rise may be a by product of that, setting a high benchmark in terms of performance and ladder positions can't be a bad thing, a straight sets exit, can easily be put down to inexperience and can serve as a reminder that finals are a different intensity.

Did Geelong show the dangers of topping up a list for home and away success but not with finals X factor potential?

Yes and no, the Cats have a strong and experienced list and owe it to their fans to give themselves every opportunity to win a premiership, imo they have underachieved the last few years and i wonder if its a coaching thing, they have plenty of X factor.

On your Essendon point, Essendon haven't recruited any Free agents, i assume you mean recruiting mature players, i see their list as having issues, my opinion might be bias as i hate them, but they have holes all over.

I see our list as having a lot better depth and young talent to build on, Essendon paid a high price for all of their recruits, which will put them back.

Re Martin
Interesting situation he finds himself in.
Yes - Dogs are more advanced but they also have about 8 players fighting each other for midfield time - and most of them are early to mid 20s in age. What position does he want or play - can Dogs play him there?
If we wants midfield time we’ve got Ed and Murph on the way out plus a bunch of kids. He ought to get more midfield time at Blues next year and more so in the future.

Tomlinson
Agree - if salary demand is not too high he is a no brainer.

He is best 22 in our squad all day/year long

We can do this all day long, but again - It's not about finding someone that's better than what we have, as much as it is finding what we need.

I don't know who we'll end up with, but I think it will just make sense - No Ellis....No Talia....and No Tomlinson, unless being seen to be doing something is more important than actually doing it.

I always find this term most interesting. How much time is deemed to be sufficient in evaluating and making a decision on a player? Just a general question, not at all based on Dow and his two seasons.
It's all individual. Look at Ratten for history. More recently Josh Kennedy.

Fitness and strength can take years. I played decent level hockey for 8 years but coming out of school I was puny and school boy fit, took 4 years to get my body and attitude right, as an amateur.

This.

Tomlinson walks straight into our current side.

He probably would, but where and who would miss out.
He is not a need, let’s not go down the Dodoro path.
Concentrate our focus and resources on our needs.

Quality experienced mid.

Dangerous quick hard working goal kicking small forwards.

Skilled link up player.

Bridging ruckman.

Tomlinson is both, better than the options we have( which is actually the point of drafting and trading) and fits a need.

We have similar, but nothing like him

Ellis camp started demanding more money late in the piece (after it became apparent that we wouldn't get cogs), that's why we dropped interest. There is a chance that we will take another look now but SOS isn't happy that what was basically a hand shake deal tried to get changed at the last minute due to the perception we had more money to spend. Really a matter of finding out how much Ellis had to do with that and how much was his management team.

Things are looking good re papley in that it looks increasing more likely Essendon will be willing to deal with Swans for Daniher. That being said I can't see that deal being done early so the pressure will be on SOS to get other deals done, while still keeping enough assets for Papley.

I think Agesta said there is no limit to the amount of quality players you can put on your list. If Tomlinson is gettable and he is a quality player then you take him. He can play on a wing, fill a hole in defence or offer a third tall option. Are we that blessed with afl ready players that we can be super picky? Look at someone like Henderson at Hawthorn. Similar size and position. Not a superstar but he plays a role in their system. Also someone like McIntosh from Richmond. Not a star but a decent role player. He would only be on 500k and we have plenty of cap space

He's just not that good. What immediate need do you see him filling and at the expense of who?

Maybe you're right, but I just don't see him as a need at all. One of those players that looks OK, and generally just does OK.
Nothing great....nothing poor. Just an MOR player for mine and being 'free' shouldn't make him immediately more appealing.

Reckon he fits the Saints and Demons better.
