I wouldn't be overly concerned about the Jacobs, Betts rumours. the CFC are trying to be a destination club. Put it into the same context as trying to sell your house, the more interested the more that want it. Last year we couldn't sell, this yr trying to sell to strengths. Its a numbers game and the more we perceive to want to come to us the greater the chance we have to reap rewards. We are shaking branches, building perceptions, which in a marketing perspective is the right way to go. I have faith in the strategy and in the recruiters to combine all of the information to recruit what suits us best in the way forward.

Pickett really looked like he could become an absolute gun when he arrived. He had the speed, hands, skills and flair.

Just goes to prove how tough recruiting is.

I never saw it with Pickett.

I agree he had the right elements, but the sum seemed to be less than the parts.

Obviously injuries and lack of fitness were the main issues.

But from what we got to see he 1) didn't do enough 2) was a 'nearly' player (eg he would break the lines but then turn the ball over).

I guess we will never know if it all would have clicked if he'd gotten continuity. I of course hoped it would, but always feared that it wouldn't.

Gary Rohan is a good example. He's got some great highlights, and has an impressive quarter here or there. But years go by and you realise he averages less touches a game than Robbie Warnock (yes, really) and less goals than Troy Menzel.... Puke

I am also very certain none of our hires have occurred in outer space.

(that's a joke)

Feels like a lot of the previous regime's hires came from Uranus...

(not yours, but from somebody at the club)

Having thought through this through many sleepless nights....given we missed out on that GWS guy who's name eludes me....and with Papley maybe in the too hard basket, I'd kind of be okay if we picked up Jack Martin, Dan Butler, Eddie, and even Tom Cutler...and still retain at least our 2020 1st round pick.

Not really A Graders (although Martin has the potential) but gives us more depth and a change of dynamic.

Having said that, I think we'll end up with Papley.

edit...Eddie is as A Grade as you get at his best, still don't reckon he's done...worth a chance

More than this I think it’s also us leaking these visits by players to the media so that the Swans and others know we have options. For example it’s important for the Swans to know we can go to Jacobs instead of Cameron or Butler and Gray instead of Papley if they ask too much. Likewise to other players who may think they can ask for more money they need to know we have other options on the table.

I am curious about the Darcy Cameron love on here.

Given he’s not getting a game at swans, I can only assume he’s another run of the mill type.

Or is there a bit of Nankervis about him, not stylish, more grunt with a big heart type?

Knightmare's 2013 Phantom Draft write up:

#44 Sydney (via Collingwood and West Coast) – Darcy Cameron (WA – Ruck/KPF)
Height: 203cm, Weight: 98kg, DOB: 18/07/1995
Recruited from: Claremont
Style: Dean Cox
Player comparison:
Range: 30-rookie
Profile: Cameron is one of the better ruckmen this year because he is not only an effective tap ruckman but because he can present as a target up forward and influence games in the front half with his clean hands overhead and ability to take marks, mark on the lead as well as convert from those opportunities. Cameron reads it well in the air and can also push back and take an intercept mark. He has some size on his frame already which is encouraging and he covers the ground reasonably well for a young tall.

I think securing the players you’ve described will be a great outcome for Carlton. I’m confident that our list will be stronger next year based purely on development and experience of the current players. We’ll land a big fish. May not be this year but a distinct possibility that it will be for 2021. Bookmark it.

I agree and disagree.

I disagree - He definitely showed it at the beginning. He had serious talent and flair. I can see exactly why he was picked with pick 4.

I agree - He couldn't play out a game tho. Apparently was poor at training. Attitude. Injuries. Didn't do enough.

Footy is very much a mental game now.

Exactly why recruiting is difficult.

This.

Could Betts/Gray/Butler be to show the Swans we have options, so don’t dick us around during negotiations.
Could Sauce be there to show Phillip’s that you can take the alleged 1 year contract and show your loyalty, or we have a ready replacement wanting to come in.

Me too, however if you recall the reason we let go Jacobs in the first place, it was because we thought we couldn’t play Kreuzer and Jacobs in the same team at the same time.

10 years later what has changed.

Warnock was preferred over Jacobs so Jacobs wanted to go back to South Australia and who can blame him? This still annoys me. Like us getting rid of Porter for Pagan's old pricks.

I may be wrong, but, wasn’t it Hampson who was preferred ahead of Jacobs?

Its almost as if SOS, not satisfied with the mundane of talent identification, recruitment and trading has decided to add time-space continuum manipulation tonhis bow.

Remember losing Jacobs for Hampson/Warnock? *snap* changed.

Remember losing Betts for Thomas??...he won't??...
Oh Teague wants to see it????....well okay just once....*snap*.

Warnock sat out his first year with a shoulder injury (I think) and then Hampson got played.
I am cricket sleep deprived though
I'm also sleep deprived; coping with molar needing a root canal, so have no idea what I'm doing and most likely wrong in anything I manage to write.

Sauce was third in line at best under the old regime. Was offered a starter role at Adelaide and the dollars to match. Can't blame him. We had too much $$$ and sunk cost falacy invested in both Hammer and Warnock.

Think had SOS and co been in place at the time they'd have kept Sauce and traded out Warnock and/or Hampson at a loss on investment but it would have been the right move.

The Jacobs returning to CFC possibility is interesting... I'm assuming that would mean Phillips would be gone?

IMO we would have Kreuz, Jacobs (who I guess would be 2nd string, but with the potential to push Kreuz for his spot, especially given Kreuzers inability to stay on the park), TDK still developing in the 2nds and then a younger ruck man developing behind him?

Here's a post of mine from last year. It shows the recruits from other teams on premiership lists 2012 onwards.

Spoiler alert: no real $1.3M types, lots of foot soldiers

Spot on. And it’s also interesting to look at it from the other perspective, teams that have picked up the stars.

Judd to Carlton
Danger to geelong
Shiel to Essendon
Buddy to swans
Ablett to Gold Coast
May/lever to Melbourne
Trevor to Collingwood

These are just names I’m listing that come to mind, I’m sure there are plenty more.

But point of the story - majority of the premiership teams trades in last 7 or 8 years (so basically free agency period) have been your foot soldiers. However, teams that have chased the superstars are yet to bear fruits in the form of premierships.

That will change, law of averages says it will, and this year (tigers/lynch or pies/trelor) is looking likely. But don’t get hung up on bringing in superstars. Build superstars (Cripps, Walsh, weitering, Curnow, McKay). Trade in foot soldiers or young up and coming types.

Can’t wait to see what the blues deliver in 2020. Couldn’t give a stuff if we didn’t recruit a single player in the trade period.

Although, I have a sneaky suspicion that jack martin would fall into that foot soldier category. So happy to take him.

Find a silky small forward at pick 8, and give him two years to develop with Eddie.

It was reported that Phillips is assessing his options. Has a 1 year deal in front of him.

Given his age, he may be trying to see if there's a club like Geelong without a decent ruckman that might give him an opportunity in the primary role.

As it stands, he will always be behind Kreuzer at Carlton.
Geelong look like they have set their sights on Goldstein
