...and apparently cost him nothing in terms of strength. He's still far too strong for most of his opponents, no matter where he plays.

But for me, the biggest thing has been his durability (and if that is a by-product of his fitness regime, then good on him). In a season where Jones, Curnow, McKay, Kreuzer and Marchbank all missed at least one 4+ week block, his availability week in week out was a real boon for us.

Top 5 in the Best and Fairest richly deserved; I thought he could have.finished a little higher, but I'm not complaining!

This was great.

But begs the question “why was he so heavy previously?”

He always looked slow and heavy.

have we heard anything about why betts has not been done yet...that one seems pretty straight forward.
10cp said earlier that the clubs could still be agreeing over how much of next years contract the crows are going to pay.

The biggest part of his turnaround is the sudden increase in mobility and fitness levels. Nothing to do with a fresh crack at things, everything to do with a team that can actually run for a change.

The overwhelming majority of his current skillset can be seen in his junior tape.
Cas really busted a nut out there, like a player aware that he'll have to fight hard for a senior place this year. Didn't do himself any harm though, played pretty well, and looked the most mobile I've seen him.
Bamboo Harvester's summary after an NB's practice match back in March.....take a bow Jacky Russell....

Going to be annoying waiting for the last day for the Papley trade to eventuate.

Looks like Sydney are going to play the "What pick 9? We're keeping Papley" game, agree a trade for Daniher, and then let Papley go. Or a 3 way trade so nobody is left in the lurch.

Give this another go.

9 + 2020 3rd for Papley + 25

25 + 43 for Martin + 58 (Values him at 18-19)

Pick 72 for Betts

2020 1st + Swap of 2020 2nd round selections for Gaff (Perhaps unders but if they can get Kelly for our 1st + 14 I am sure they would do it)

48 + 58 + 85 left to go to the draft with. (85 will be gibbons upgrade).

WC future 2nd, No future 1st or 3rd.

Leaves us pretty bare for trades next year but In: Betts, Papley, Martin, Gaff. Out: 9, Future 1st + 3rd and some pick swaps.

Essendon needed Setterfield.
Nothing wrong with small players but having the same types competing for the same positions will catch you out.

I can understand Dodoro having been upset to 'have to' hand over two firsts for Shiel.
Worked so hard to get the upper hand on his mate SOS, only to be left eating s**t thereafter. Oh well.
It was good that he copped it in the neck for a change the big grandstander.........made me very happy to see him blink at the last minute instead of him doing it to others!!! If he is a mate of SOS, I would hate to see SOS`enemies.............

Interesting first day. At 9am Tom Harley says Papley has a multi year deal and they don’t want him to go

By 5pm they have softened (thanks to Joe) and commentators are of the opinions that good old Pick 9 is overs and something should come back!

If we can jag that 25 off the swans it should satisfy GC and that leaves our 2020 picks for the mystery [emoji476]or Gaff

He always looked slow and heavy.

I think our conditioning people were off the pace, and had been for a long time. Across the whole Ratten-Malthouse era, I can't remember any player (not just Casboult) having their body shape changed much by the Club. Such changes as we saw were usually independent and player-driven, like Cripps with his running coach.

I think it is a great sign, just 12 months into the Russell regime. There might be some real upside left in most of our list purely from getting their bodies right like Casboult has, completely independent of nebulous 'potential', 'development', etc.

Dropping Plowman? Our most versatile defender and 3rd in B&F. I love Marchy but Plow is one of our most important and consistent players.

Plow is Simmo's heir apparent - unobtrusively gets the job done day in and day out. He's a quiet one and sometimes we just don't realise how good he is!

Just on Marchy and Cunners I view them both similarly (Marchy a few more runs on the board)...literally bucket loads of talent, but so bloody injury prone. From memory this was Marchy’s 3rd full season at the blues and every single one of these years has been cut short by injuries. So far in his career he’s had a knee, ankle, elbow, back and the latest one being his neck. Yes, he has raw talent, athleticism and bravery, but is so injury prone which is such a shame.
Cunners; took a little time to find his feet at AFL level, but his explosion from stoppage, step and also the goal sense that we saw in the pre season games and early rounds had me very excited. Unfortunately and much like Marchy he is injury prone and his body has let him down to date.

I hope these boys get a clear run at it at some point, but as it stands they have teased us more than they have delivered.
Agree. I'd add a sort of mental hurdle for both of them to get over as well. It's an intangible quality, a wobbliness of sorts? By contrast Willo I think has it in spades and his issues are more straight up physical.
