I’m trying to understand the underlying strategy behind the type of players Saints have been linked to. They’re supposedly close to trading away a tall, but they seem light on for ready made talls? They seem to be targeting speed, but seem reasonably equipped in that area? They do my head in.

Think they're just going for best available. No pressure on Ratts next year. Play out 2020 and then address needs.

Bonar would be a great move, and he'd be cheap given the contract.

12 + 18 = 3
No way the AFL allow the extra 1st rounder in the trade.
More to the point, they won't do that deal, because they'd have no currency to move into the top 3.

They want to jump ahead of the green pick so they can get a top 4 player AND Green.

Then they have Melbourne holding them to ransom.
Much too tricky a course to navigate, unless under-the-table handshake deals are involved.

It doesn't sound right as if GWS were to deal, they'd sooner be dealing with Melbourne as they know what in front of them.

The smarter operators will get more done and get the better deals done.
The longer things go, the more the poorer operators find a way of sticking their nose in, where it doesn't belong.

I like the idea of the shorter and more active period.

The weekend in between would add a lot to the 'drama' as there's no more padding thereafter.
You're either in or you're out come Monday morning.

It's all relative Harks, no matter the timeframe, most deals are mutually beneficial and sometimes people get desperate and blink, just like Reid did in the Gibbs trade

Adding Papley and Martin into our side makes our side bloody dangerous!! There both the exact players that win teams premierships. Fast and crafty players!

Then throw in Eddie betts!

Then throw in a all Australian half back in doc!

Another year into our young kids, but most of all add the confidence our kids will get in more experience around them.

Teague giving the team more freedom then Bolton (already seen glimpses of this)!

I honestly think we will be the Brisbane of next year and play finals!

Do you know if we're linked to him?

Yes, I hear what you're saying but thinking and dealing on ones feet is not just important...it's vital.
Not all List Managers (see people) are the same and some require a period of time to digest and some just work on instinct.

A shorter trade period would be a lot more dynamic and really showcase those that can deal on the run and those that can't.
At this stage a 5 day period with a weekend include feels right and it would make for having to be prepared and on your bike, or to be left behind.

Agreed, their list strategy is bizzare

Im confused. How can you get Green + top 4 player with just pick 4?
Draft will have Rowell and Anderson in spots 1&2. Need to ensure Melbourne don't bid on Green at 3.

If that plays out, they take the 4th best in the draft and then wait for Sydney/Essendon to bid on Green. Then they pay for it with later draft picks.

Because if they take someone at pick 4 BEFORE a bid comes on Green they can use their next pick on Green after someone bids, so for example if someone bids at pick 10 GWS could use their next pick to get him. Even if that pick is say 20, they would just use 20 and slide back on later picks to make up the points

I don't disagree with a shorter trade period, either way similar deals will get done

I actually think it is a good way to posture during a negotiation

The stronger the trader, the longer the timeframe, the better for results
