What's the point of front loading it the way he has then?

To fend off other clubs. Why pay a player a million bucks cash for them to demand a trade at the end of the year?

Gibbs also wanted a trade when he'd been heavily paid for his front ended contract. Beams is another example. Risky for the club. Thus why we're/Martin is making it seem risky and unfeasible as possible for Melbourne to try to draft him.

Don’t be shitty my like to post ratio shits on yours.

I wasn’t saying Martin is less talented than Ellis, I was saying it’s funny how we praise our list management team for offering Martin well above market value yet laugh at Ellis for asking for the same amount.

Martin has achieved very, very little to date. And although Ellis has ridden the coat tails of his A-grade teammates, he was a first round pick in his own right and a decent player when Richmond were still average.

I don’t care, I’m glad Martin is locked away but the rose coloured glasses is funny.

Yeah - I live for the likes....

That's decent coin for Martin.

Melbourne and Gold Coast supporters would be ecstatic that if they dont take him, they'll be making us pay top dollar.

See how stupid this arguement sounds when the shoe is on the other foot!
1 million + in the first year when we have cap space to pay it. The remaining 4 years at about 500k a year. Sounds great to me, especially given we get him for free. Like it.

Me too. Nothing wrong with the deal at all.

It is interesting to highlight that, statistically at least, the outputs of Martin/Ellis aren't as far apart as you'd think from reading this board.
*Inb4 I get accused of saying Ellis is better* Martin is definitely the more naturally gifted of the two.View attachment 777770

Personally, I think Ellis gets a raw deal here by many. Maybe it's the 'Richmonditis' that he's infected with.
Having said that, his stats are decent in what has been the best side of the last 3 seasons. I wouldn't think there is scope for improvement.

Martin on the other hand placed in an environment that will foster his ability and desire could be bloody anything.

How good is it to actually have an environment like this at Carlton, after being the pits for so many years..

Ellis has a punchable head and has skirted a few contests = spud on here.

Realistically he’s alright and would’ve been handy to our thin midfield. Probably not for the price tag though.

But they're not paying the million out of the salary cap which would be the main issue. It wouldn't scare a team as much as if it counted against the cap.

I would agree with you there, he's no star but he's a player that has gotten the most from his skillset which if anything, is why I respect him.
Martin trumps most in the comp for raw ability, hopefully for all of our sake he can consistently deliver on it.
I imagine Harry, Charlie & Co will be pretty keen to be receiving some of his delivery inside f50.[emoji106]

Good point. I thought this is why the contract was so heavily front ended.
If the whole contract only has to be evened out then there was no point doing it.
I know a free agent has only to be matched in total but not so sure about the PSD.

Figures would have been produced in collaboration with our list management team, extremely likely that the million will include "banked" TPP which
we would lose if not used for next season. Even if GC or Melb can match the total figure averaged over time, it would advantage us to front load to
utilise amounts we would otherwise forfeit access to.

Would anyone match $600k per year for 5 years for a player who does not want to be there?

I think you are right, it's the regular squib moments he has that stick in the mind and probably create a negative bias against him. He is a smart player and a hard working two-way runner.

Well.. yes. They could back themselves to turn him, if not it's only $600k against the cap for 1 year or they can trade him for something decent, like a second or 3rd round pick.

To be honest if you're correct I think Melbourne would be stupid not to do it, heck even the Suns should pick him back up if that's the case, it's really not that much of a financial hit.

Whenever we are coming up to play GC there is always one player I check to see if they are playing and its Jack Martin.

Dont look at his whole career as its been with a side that regularly gets thumped. Look at his games against other poor teams. Its when gold coast play evenly matched teams like Carlton, its Martin's class that tears these teams apart.

He averages 19 disposals and a goal per game against Brisbane, Carlton, Essendon, Fremantle, North, St Kilda, Bulldogs in what have been mostly competitive games over the course of his career.

I look forward to see what he can do as a 25 year old in a Carlton team on the rise in 2020.He wont be the player making a bad team good, but if he gets to us and we are as good as we are thinking we are going to be, I think he will be the danger man for us.

Averaging 19 disposals a game and a goal against the weaker teams in the competition, is not tearing these teams apart, bit of a reach don't you think?
