My fav was the GAJ one. Came back just to syphon more money from Geelong. Priceless 🤣

He’s money hungry but let’s not forget he came back to Geelong because it was convenient to him at the time and not because he wanted to actually play for us again. Mercenary of the highest order.

That's just a straight up lie mate. Why? What's the point of making up shit? Surely you know someone else will remember what happened?

He offered to pay back $300,000 to the Suns to return to Geelong.

Wasn't it that he wanted to come back to be with his sister who was having some issues (and then she died before he could get back)?

Barry Cable is an interesting one, he meets the OP's criteria, but not all in the VFL/AFL.

Perth 1962-69
North Melbourne 1970
Perth 1971-73
North Melbourne 1974-77

Yep 100% great player, no loyalty. I’d react the same way if Dusty left for another club.

Fair enough. Didn’t know that, did he end up paying it?

I still lol that salmon is in hawthorns team of the century. Not because he wasn't good, but because his years at the hawks were clearly his twilight as he was on the way down yet they still apparently didn't have anyone else

and yet Hawthorn's TOTC would be one of the strongest. They just took it way too literally I think in the way they picked it - they left out long serving greats to fit in a 2nd ruck on the bench and given Hawthorn's lack of elite historical rucks (and Salmon being fresh (no pun intended) in the mind after back to back B&F's), he gets in. Someone needed to be reminded they don't actually play a game - you don't need to pick an extra ruck.

I'd argue he wasn't a mercenary of the highest order, because the money at the Gold Coast was an absolute Godfather offer. If he had moved for just $100k more, THAT would be a mercenary of the highest order move IMO.

There were two other factors at play IMO. One, his relationship with Bomber had collapsed. Two, he was never going to be captain at Geelong.

Very likely - Liam Jones joins the list

With how many Bulldogs players you put in your bottom 50s, I sense a honourable mention in 2023 because he’s an antivaxer

best threads on bf though đź’Ż

Umm, that’s exactly what makes him a mercinary..

Nick Hind and Mitch Hannan kind of fit this criteria. Both drafted out of the VFL and were eventually traded back to the same club, only this time at AFL level.

Maurice Rioli (maybe).

Rioli signed with the Swans during the Great Edelstone Purchase in 86. There were the photos of him in a Swans jumper with his new teammates etc. Anyway, there were contract issues, a standoff etc (maybe the VFL just said 'You know Doc, we are trying to have some rules' - the salary cap was brought in 1987).
Anyway, Rioli did not play the first 10 or so games in 1987, and then re-appeared for the Tigers - now wearing No 27, rather than 17.

Played his last few years running around Fremantle oval. So yes he counts!
