Hawthorn get up by six points, making it almost certain they'll finish top 2.

Silly Melbourne, why would you think that two goals would be enough to win a game of football?
Probably thought they’d try it again after it worked at Norwood… looked like they adopted a very similar plan in that 2nd half to stop the Hawks run that they did in that game.

Essendon and Richmond have a draw! Unfortunately for us, that still leaves Richmond as a threat to take our top 4 spot if we lose next week, although they would have to beat Hawthorn. Fremantle is the other concern, with a match to come against the Bulldogs next week that they will probably win. If we win they shouldn't catch us on percentage (they'd need something like a 100 point win, AND for us to lose a bunch of percentage ourselves) but if we lose they'd be odds on favourites to go past us.

Technically, we could still finish as low as 7th, but that's pretty unlikely - we'd have to take a huge percentage hit and Port would need to record an enormous win. 5th or 6th are both very much within the realms of possibility if we lose, though.

All in all, our match against Gelong is going to be vital.

Meanwhile, if Port and Essendon both win next week (which is likely - they are facing GWS and Carlton respectively) it will box Melbourne out of the finals, which I won't shed any tears about. I wouldn't fancy facing them in a knockout final.

That result makes it even more likely that we'll play North in the first week of the finals.

If we beat North tomorrow, we stay 3rd on the ladder and keep North in 2nd spot.

If we lose to North, and Brisbane win (they're home against Sydney) then North go into top spot and we drop to 4th.

It's also possible we could end up playing Port if we lose to Geelong next week and Richmond upset Hawthorn.

The Hawks already have a top two spot locked in so there's the potential that they could rest some players to freshen them up for finals.

After 10 games ?? Wouldn't have thought so.

They wouldn't want to face Brisbane.

Technically Hawthorn haven't quite locked in a top 2 spot yet. If Brisbane win big today and next week and Hawthorn lose, they could drop to 3rd. But certainly they're in the box seat.

And have been gifted player handouts.
Yes, that annoys me. They chose to put all their efforts into the Chinese experiment, and didn’t bother about the AFLW, but are now reaping the rewards. If they can keep the team together, they’ll be very strong competitively in a few years, while the Crows seem to be languishing.

They've certainly been given access to some damn good players, but let's not overstate things. Them choosing to focus on China probably cost them the inaugural SA spot in AFLW. Instead, they've had to watch their crosstown rival win three flags - flags they could have won. That's a fairly big price to pay.

Even if the drafts had just been normal once they entered, they still would have been able to pick the majority of the best SA talent just from being lower than us on the ladder.

I wouldn't say we're languishing, either. We're still comfortably top 4, as we have been for five seasons now. We were 1 point away from playing in the GF last season. Most of our best players have years left.

So with our top 4 position locked away (barring a 20 goal win from Fremantle), we now get to watch to see what else happens this weekend. It looks like being a pretty interesting weekend of matches, with something on the line in most of them. Melbourne get the first bite at the apple, with a likely win over Collingwood putting them in the top 8 pending Essendon's match against Carlton later that day to snatch the spot back.

You'd have to think that the result of North at home vs Gold Coast is a foregone conclusion, but if they do manage to drop it, it opens the door for Hawthorn to snatch the minor premiership, which would be worth it just for the lols alone.

Brisbane will be looking for a big win over St Kilda to move into 2nd spot and stake their claims for the $1M prize. Assuming they win (which they should, although it is away), Richmond vs Hawthorn becomes an interesting match, with Hawthorn needing to win to finish top 2 and win the $1M prize. If Brisbane manages to win both flags this season and yet don't win the McClelland Trophy I will laugh my head off. And money aside, do we want Hawthorn to win to ensure that Brisbane don't have a home qualifying final, and increase the chance that they get knocked out? Or do we want Richmond to win, to almost certainly deprive Port of a home final?

If Richmond loses to Hawthorn, then Port will be playing (against GWS) for a home final. And of course, the weekend ends with Fremantle's final bid to deliver a record-breaking thumping against the Bulldogs and knock us out of a top 4 spot.

Yeh, but I'd rather the 3 premierships due to having an inaugural side. Plus, we had tier 1 players like Randall and Phillips, while they had our leftovers.

Hawthorn to win and North to lose so we have Hawthorn first week of the finals would be the best result
