Practice match results are so irrelevant.

This time last year Melbourne beat Carlton by 5 goals, then proceeded to have an appalling year while Carlton backed up the next week with one of their best home and away wins in the history of their club. And proceeded to then have an absolutely tremendous year before injuries hit around the Hawks game.

I always go back to 2018 when we went 2-0 in the practice matches and ended up winning 2 games for the whole H+A season.

Not quite looking like the midfield option you were hoping for is he?
Me? I never wanted the switch really, but he's had some ok moments on the wing and as a defensively-aware clearance player.

Right now I have him as the 7th midfielder, with the option of swinging into defence.
Ffs don’t start campaigning against Lord. He was our best player in the second half. Cut the shit. Absolutely cut the shit.
No one is disputing what he can do when he gets his hands on the footy or an opponent. Mobility is the concern, and he's seemingly trying to make himself even stronger at the expense of his pace.

I don't see him having a quality impact round 1, but the way I see the list often isn't the way it's played. It is getting closer now though.

What is this based on?

Carroll looks like another Austin winner.

Nice to see Campo get a goal.

Lord played really well.

Umps had an all time stinker.

Ultimately not much else to take from that. We lost to St Kilda yet again. Our track record against Ross Lyon teams ain't good.
The umps did it perfectly, giving hope and driving up membership.

Understandable 'bounce the ball FFS' impatience syndrome - causing over analysis of not much of anything significance much going on...

My take was : Carlton were a class above St Kilda in Q1 that was obvious. Then everything became a get some k's into their legs affair.

I love Doc, his courage and resilience, but think he was once a star but now at best provides solid AFL output with the bonus of years of experience. We moved him from HBF as he was getting exposed a little… I remember Brad Hill doing a number on him a few years ago, running off him when they had Brad play forward on him. I really liked him on the wing where he connects and where he can have influence at both ends but not so exposed by being responsible for a person down back.

His experience 2 years ago when we beat Dees with his mark from Ollie and his kick to Acres was critical. That connection role on the wing I think FWIW really suits him now.

I respect your opinion ETET but aren’t you being a bit hasty?

His pre season has been awesome. A standout. Not slow or missing any of his talent. The guy is a star and has missed a year. Give him a chance

It was one practice match that meant nothing. No focus on game plan or anything. Just miles in the legs against an opposition

He was very impressive. But still think he is going to find it hard to find a place in this team unless he can displace Hewett in 2025 which is probably unlikely. Not a fan of having Cripps/Hewett/Lord at CBAs together. Trading Kennedy away was the smart move and although Lord is probably a bit more dyanmic than Kennedy the improvement in our ability to spread from stoppage should come from the likes of Smith, E.Hollands and Cerra returning to the midfield, rather than the addition of another inside contested player.

I struggle to see Lord in with Cripps Hewett Cerra. I rate him but it’s going to take an injury for him to play

We can’t go in with so many inside types.

Nice to have options

The Ollie Hollands at half back experiment just gives me SPS vibes. Won’t work out. Ollie’s strength is his tank - put him on the wing.
He needs to take the first option.

Has poor spatial awareness, panics when he doesn’t take that option and gets caught or turns it over.

At this stage IMO he’s a super athlete and average footballer. Think he was a reach at 11 in a poor draft.

I wouldn't be reading to much into the result. Only a pre season game that meant nothing.

My major concern this season is ball movement and run from defence.

IMO Doc needs to be moved into defence permanently especially coming off an ACL and Newman injured.

I wouldn’t reading ANYTHING into yesterday’s match.

Based on the intensity shown by established players I’d say it was all about minutes. Weiters especially looked like he was there because he had to be.

Didn’t really give much insight at all as to how we’ll change things up in 25 - Hollands at halfback was as exciting as it got.

Very strange E.Hollands playing 2s?

Doc looks like a player who hasn’t played in a year - he’ll be right come round 1 but prefer him away from the stoppage.

I reckon Moir will still be a year away from being a consistent player at any level - enormously talented and skilled but plays a tough role as a hybrid forward. If he makes it, he’ll be a star, but could also end up a bit of Menzel type. Reckon he’ll start the year in the VFL.

Way to shoot down a kid in his third year, in the first “game” (using that term very loosely) he’s played in a new position. Also in a game where the overwhelming rhetoric has been around getting k’s into players legs rather than showing off our game plan. Thought he looked decent despite all of that

Forgot the biggest positive - Motlop being involved for big minutes and looking incredibly fit.

More worried about the smalls than talls in our forward set-up, this helps to allay those concerns somewhat.

I sometimes wish Big Footy had have been around earlier than it was. Right now, I would be reviving the Carlton v Essendon pre-season thread from 1995. It would have been a real cr@pshoot.

I remember us losing to Sth Fremantle by over 100 points in a pre season game in 1981. Imagine the reactions to that 😂😂

Well, I've seen some ordinary football from us, but today was close to the worst. Granted that it was a practice match that nobody gave a damn about, but the lack of intensity, the poor skills, the poor decision making, the inability to find a forward, the inability to pick up the 'Aint's defenders, ...
I was pretty frustrated. And the umpiring was almost as bad as how we played. Even so, that isn't why we lost. We lost because we didn't have contributors, our ball handling was poor, our good players were non-existent and our small forwards were invisible.

[1] The rucks:
We were beaten on the day by the guy who hasn't played a senior game yet. Granted he's a proven match winner in the SANFL, but the point had to made. We got nothing from the centre taps and didn't win many clearances.
Tom de Koning showed about 10 minutes of brilliance, in which he marked everything, got a couple of clearances and generally was superlative. But before that, he didn't do much.
Marc Pittonet had a shocker.
Skull O'Keefe came on in the last quarter and got some taps and some ball, but he is still light and weak compared the giants he is going to be playing against. Even so, he showed something, which Pitto didn't.

[2] Mids:
Our 1st ranked mids did very little. Cripps was on the ground, but that was about it. George was likewise. He had a chance to win the match with a set shot from about 40 m, passed the ball (poorly) instead, turned the ball over. The ball went down the other end and they kicked the sealer from 50+ into the howling gale. It encapsulated the match; they played with confidence and dash, while we didn't. Cerra got a bit of it, but his disposal today was dreadful.
The shining light was Jagga: he looked like he is ready. Then he went off injured. Again, that says so much.
Cooper Lord wasn't bad late and Blake Acres did some nice things, but our midfield lowered its colours.
Lucas Camporeale kicked a nice goal and got a bit of it, but he isn't there yet.

[3] Defenders:
Weitering had a poor day and struggled in the wind. Young wasn't bad in patches, but wasn't there when it mattered. Haynes wasn't bad. Ollie Hollands had some good patches, as did Matt Carroll, but we were loose and didn't have the same run the 'Aints had.

[4] Key forwards:
Total non-contributors. H had 2 early goals, but nothing after that. I don't think he took a mark after quarter time.
Moir was dangerous, but we couldn't get it near him.
Lemmey looked lost.
Our resting rucks did nothing either.
Probably our least effective players.

[5] Small forwards:
Motlop got 3, but did very little else. He may not have got a possession for 2 quarters, even with the players going on and off. His last quarter was reasonable.
Fantasia: Invisible. Had a set shot and missed badly, which took the wind from our sales. Otherwise, he was invisible.
Fog and Zac - I think they were out there, but they didn't contribute. They didn't even stop St. Kilda's playmakers from running the ball out of defence.

I found it difficult to find any positives out of the game: they wanted it more, their ball handling was better and their decision making wasn't much better than ours. But their shanks found targets, while our defenders didn't find the ball.

The game was there to win, but we didn't do anything near enough to get over the line. As a spectacle, it was one of the worst games I've ever seen. When I was coaching the kids at Charlton College, they more game sense, more desire and better skills, and my kids were the U14's.

No coach would be concerned with win/loss in these types of hitouts, but nothing wrong with dissecting what we see in strengths and weaknesses and or further development in players

The preseason footage we have seen mirrored mostly what we saw yesterday.......

Hewy in ripping form. (BOG for mine)

Jesse firing and fit. 2nd best for mine (the missing piece :thumbsu: )

Big H looking ominous.

We have got very, very good young players in Jagga and Lord. (Carroll a nice surprise to me too)

Only real anomaly for mine was Ollie not being as damaging streaming through the middle from defence
as he had been. It looked to me as if Lyon put a bit of work into him.......Tosser. It was an intra club hit out.

Reckon Ollie will bounce back next week . He has looked very good with his run and carry from half back.

Haynes interesting...... Did quite well. Will Jack SOS get in ahead of him?

Is Kemp on the outer at present?

Will Sam play?

Many of these questions will be answered in Canberra.
