In isolation, the Mansell suspension is correct.
The whole game is pushing and shoving

If you opponent loses balance when they are trying to hold you out of a contest they are always going to fall into the contest

Suspensions like Mansell’s are always going to be completely arbitrary

The league gets criticised because they didn’t punished Ginbey . . . so the league throws the book at the next player who can be credibly charged with the same offence . . .

Consistency? Who gives a crap

Justice? Don’t make me laugh

Sickening incident

From memory Craven spent longer out injured that Lockett spent suspended

Craven basically had to have his face reconstructed

Thirty years later, every commentator: “Tony Lockett, what a champion etc. etc. etc. etc.”

The Rhyan Mansell three weeks suspension is the worst AFL tribunal decision since Tony Lockett murdered Peter Craven in cold blood in 1994 and the AFL punished him by giving him a Brownlow medal.

Please discuss:

So next game if Tigers players are shoved into marking contests all game and 6 end up concussed youre ok with it?

And then another 4 the following week?

Or maybe the AFL coming down hard before it becomes a thing is possibly a good idea.

He knew what he was doing and he got the standard penalty for concussing someone.

I don’t know how you reckon you know from the available footage that Mansell had some kind of malicious intent, rather than just perfectly normally trying to get some separation from the man who was marking him, but good on ya, you’re just the kind of fan the AFL would love – happy to give them a pat on the back no matter how inconsistent and tokenistic their rulings

How about the umpires just actually apply the rules as they are written and pay a free for ANY push in the back.

Greg Williams would like a word.

Lockett on Caven was the worst act I’ve seen in my time watching the game.

He copped 8 weeks, which at the time was a very big penalty.

He would probably get 12 weeks at least these days - maybe longer.

I don’t think anyone who watched Lockett play, especially in his St Kilda days, would argue that the guy was a thug - his hit on Caven was not an isolated incident.

He’s fortunate that it’s something often overlooked in his legacy really.

Lockett and GAS both had the same rule. They gave one warning for holding on too much then would find a way to hurt you badly.

I don’t think Lockett’s hit was as bad as Barry Hall or Andrew Gaff’s coward punches from a thug point of view.

Caven dropped into his leading hole so he braces for impact in a brutal way. The outcome was horrendous though.

Gary Ablett was just as bad onfield.

Sorry mate but you were up in arms demanding Gibney get suspended for the same thing so you are banned from opposing the Mansell decision on any grounds.

Probably worse really - remember that elbow he gave Kristian Bardsley?

Ablett was more prone to snipe, Lockett would flatten or club players.

Both brilliant players and 2 of the biggest thugs to play but it was part of what made them the players they were - dangerous in more ways than one.

That’d be OK

But the Mansell push was from the side and I don’t think it would have been covered by the in the back rule?

“You” meaning Richmond supporters rather than me personally you mean?

Plus the fact there is complete inconsistency makes it worse not better doesn’t it? If Ginbey had been suspended the Mansell decision might look marginally less ridiculous?

The Bardsley one was horrific and he also knocked out Nathan Burke in the 91 final with a gutless elbow.

Got rubbed out for a couple of weeks for that thankfully.

Caven won in the end though. He never returned to form at the Swans, probably in part because the Swans recruited Lockett. Caven went to the Crows and won two premierships.

Still doesn’t recognise himself in the mirror due to the facial reconstruction but
