That last quarter was an exercise in energy management.

We saved as much energy as we possibly could in the first half of the last quarter, in order to be able to finish with more energy.

For those who call bullshit, I would remind you of how Ali won many of his most famous fights. On more than one occasion he would tire his opponent out through much of the fight, in order to save his energy and win the fight in the final rounds, once his larger and stronger opponent was more tired.

We simply did not have the tickets, or the necessary players at three quarter time, to play out that final quarter the same way we had played in the second. If we had tried, it would have been a slaughter.... because we weren't just playing the doggies -- we were playing the doggies AND THE UMPIRES.

What do people honestly think? That draining the tank fully, and going all out to win was going to work??

Do you REALLY think the umps were going to suddenly start being fair, and change their interpretations?

Myself, I don't think so. I think going slow, and conserving as much energy as possible for most of the last quarter, then emptying the tank at the very close, was the ONLY realistic option.

There was a reason we took our time at every opportunity during the last quarter.

There was a reason we stopped trying to create overlap run.

There was a reason we looked to the boundary line at every opportunity.

There was a reason why we didn't move the ball around the field as much.

We did all the above, because this allowed the vast majority of our team (who weren't involved in the play at any one time) MORE TIME TO REST ON THE FIELD, AND REQUIRED LESS RUNNING OF THEM.

The first and second quarters were beyond frenetic... The first quarter especially. The dogs tired halfway through the second, so we went hard to build a lead, and used more rotations in doing so.

Having three injuries occur in the third quarter was unforeseen, and meant that the rest of the side had fewer opportunities to come off for a rest. The dogs came hard, so our guys had to go hard in response. They did so, and did enough to prevent them losing too much of the lead.

So through necessity, and through injury, the fourth became a game of survival...

...and IT WORKED! We won a game that not many of us thought we could. We did what was necessary to win, and it worked.

No It wasn't pretty -- but seriously ...who gives a **** about playing pretty with umpiring like that???

I repeat: the final quarter was ALL about resource management. It was 100% a tactical decision from the coaching box.

So can we PLEASE give J-lo just a little but of credit for this win... just for once?? Just to break the monotony of bagging the guy out??

He didn't get his job as the free prize in a ****ing box of corn flakes, so let's stop treating him with such disdain folks.

We got the win, when on paper, we should have lost.... So we'll bloody done lads, it was a monumental effort all round -- even from J-lo.
Hard not to agree with this

I'll say this, I'm usually first in when it comes to having a holier than thou attitude when it comes to criticising umpires, I know I like to think I'm better than doing that, but ****ing hell that was some of the worst umpiring I've ever seen, I've been watching it on delay on public transport and it was hard not to react being surrounded by people, but wow, that umpiring was genuinely diabolical.

But we got the job done, hopefully NOD and Dogga are okay for next week and it's just precaution, but Bolton looked great today, kicked a couple which boosts his confidence, Murphy Reid is a star, Frederick, Cox and Ryan all played well and regained some much needed form. Need to absolutely demolish Richmond next week.

Need to go in hard and crush them! Should be a percentage booster if we play it right.

Very good win, held the line magnificently in that last quarter. Hayden Young really can't come back quickly enough and i'm looking fwd to seeing him in next week; we are far too reliant on Caleb putting up ridiculous numbers to compete in the middle. Injuries to Jacko and Noddy a huge concern too, two guys were absolutely cannot afford to lose.

And no, it doesn't meaningfully change my opinion of JL. We're at round 4 and we were in the 8 for the vast majority of last year. If, and it's a BIG IF, we can play like we did today more consistently it'll go a long way. But the question marks remain. I still think we rely too heavily on 3-4 guys going beast mode every week, although in fairness there was a decent spread of contributors today.

When the team goes 16 points up with 40 seconds to go and you're still not sure they'll win.

We played well, just cooked in the last quarter.

Sam Darcy will probably be the best player in the comp in the next year or so.

Glad Sean Darcy amd Young are back next week.

63 to.44 inside 50s bullies favour - tbh we dodged a bullet. We are soooo slow - and our kicking down the line is so outdated as to be shameful.

We won, but u can’t call it vaguely convincing.
Yeah / Nah.
We were done over at clearance which created the inside 50 mismatch
Defence held up well (god Darcy is good) which created turnover

We then got them with pace

Great game to watch if a bit stressful at the end. We got new seats this year & they’re awesome. Level 3 looking down straight at where Reid made the epic play on the boundary just before he kicked the winner.

Reid, Deadly Dudley & Bolts. I said this week we have quite a few players who haven’t played together in the forwards chemistry half & it hasn’t gelled yet.
It’s still not a finished work but you can see where it’s going. Expect our scoring to get better & better.

I have not seen a player like Reid for a long time. The guy just doesn’t lose a contest on the ground. Doesn’t matter how many he’s against, where he’s coming from. He has the ability to think quicker & smarter than anyone else out there. It’s timing, knowing exactly when to sit back and, when to nudge someone & when to swoop & when to knock it on or soccer. He outthinks everyone. It’s uncanny.
Duds has a bit of it too. Knows when to take possession when he’s going to be able to get clear. It’s that difference with players who are see ball get ball. The smart ones wait until they know they are not just going to get it but get clear with it.

Speaking of smart I was watching Reid & Freddy at times when we were trying to defend transition. Freddy gets drawn towards the contest when he knows he’s not going to get it but he looks to defend the player getting the ball when my head is screaming defend the next possession, there are players running to space, guard the space, close down the options.
Reid will stand between 2 players & watch them both & when he sees where the game is going he moves to close down the option to transition through that player. You can’t teach that shit.
But when Freddy is taking contested marks & kicking multiple goals you’ll take it.

Overall some of the out of form players coming good & better synergy developing with the new crop.

That was a gutsy win off the back of an elite 10 minutes where we broke it open.

Jackson is our best groundball bulldozer and Driz creates options in space. To lose both & grind it out was outstanding.

Serong & Brayshaw were elite and special mention to Drapes who quieted Darcy (freak) after he proved too much for Pearce. Make no mistake. Draper is the real deal.

Great game.

Murphy Reid is just that damn good he’s almost already our best player.. also umps can absolutely GAGF.

I msged my bro during the game that if the rest of our players were as good as Reid we'd never lose a game. He's just so unbelievably clean and poised.

Lol. The absolute ****ing trash on the ABC news sports section describing the Doggies as a “brave” side and then applauding them the whole way through the report but sounding sad and sooky about us getting up was horribly one-sided “journalism” like a one-eyed Eagles supporter.

Murphy Reid and Dudley are heads and shoulders above any first year player - They seem humble, team orientated and just smart footballers.

I just got home from the game and the only thing I didn't like was the defenders playing from behind - instead of standing next to their opponents. Watching the way GWS delivered the ball to their forwards - we would have been cooked.

Loved Bolton trying to take mark of the century twice today as well!

Way too easy to just like your post what a great honest summary
Geez I wish I thought of it
Congratulations I love it

The disgraceful umpiring actually made the game (seeing as we won) even more enjoyable to sttend. It was the loudest and most vocal crowd in a long time. I nearly burst a few blood vessels.

Should be an investigation into the umpiring in this game. It should not be acceptable. I'm sure the club won't say anything because they will be scared the VFL will find other ways to roger us. I'd like to see our ex players/staff in the media to get on the front foot and make a lot of noise.
Watch the dogs have a whinge about the sun in their eyes
