Review R5: The Good, Bad and the Nicks vs. Geelong Cats

I thought Keane had a pretty solid first half but geez he did some dumb $hit in the second half 🤮

Sholl is done, hopefully the last we see of him.

Everyone was gassed in that last quarter, tough off a 5 day break early in the season. Will cut some slack over that but boy we looked a long way off it against a pretty mediocre side

Should’ve could’ve would’ve. We played well enough to win but let Geelong get a run against the play.

The 5 day break after heat in QLD got us. Should have rested 4-5 players last week.

Now we’re 3-2 because too focused on going 5-0.
If the umpire makes the right call last week we go 1-1 from the last two weeks and 4-1 for the year. I think we made the right decision.

Unpopular opinion but until Dan Curtin is prepared to take on the physical aspects of the game, he will never be an elite player. Took short or evasive steps regularly tonight.
Inaccurate because Dan Curtin didn't get enough of the ball to draw meaningful conclusions about how he used it.

He was in the right place for the goal at least.

Our defence of their kick ins was laughable

They waltzed it out every time
We guard space even if it means we leave guys free and then when our players are on a man they play super loose because they're trying to keep room to get to a contest.

Whats really concerning was the almost complete ineffectiveness of our midfield. Soligo was a non entity, dawson had a poor game, peatling was ok, draper quiet, rankine not his usual effective self (injury may have been the cause there). Crouch ineffective...it all added up to a side that got beaten up around the ball and made really poor decisions when it did come our way.

You don’t say.

A scarecrow as head coach would have us in the exact same position, we won the games we have purely off the talent in the forward line.

The amount of times Geelong got the ball clean out of stoppage almost untouched was alarming, we had zero answer for Dangerfield up forward, he could do whatever he wanted

We were found out so badly at home by a team who I will be surprised if they finish top 6. We made Atkins look like a superstar.

Now we know where we really sit.
Mid table again.
Sad. True.
Ordinary football club.
... which reappointed an ordinary Coach (and that's being kind) prematurely,
with ordinary decisions and ordinary selections and ordinary Game Day plans.
No flair, no vision, no ****ing idea.

Stupidity.

Curtin should have been shifted on ball or sent back
I said this to a mate early in the 4th Qtr who was at the ground, when our backline was completely falling to bits.

Yeah I've been critical of us pushing him back in the SANFL last year against gorillas, but if there was going to ever be a payoff for doing that, tonight was going to be it when the likes of Keane, Max, and Woz were being slaughtered by taller timber... but crickets, no move. Our coaches literally have NFI.

Speaking of crickets... did anyone see Milera more than a couple of times tonight? Mr. Invisible at the most crucial times for a Senior player.

Dumb
We don't get far enough back from the mark for free kicks or marks. So we are needlessly under pressure when called to play on, or are forced to kick high or sideways, or as per tonight get smothered

Crouch is the captain of this particular dumb habit club. Hinge and Keane are co-vice captains

Even Dumber
Has anyone told us the umpires are being more strict this year on 15m for a kick? We are masters at the borderline short pass which suddenly turns a zero pressure situation into a hot potato hospital ball

I thought we went in one tall short in defence...played out exactly like that.

But some of that umpiring was next level favoring geelong and we absolutely failed to execute and let them time and time again get us holding the ball..thats a complete lack of both awareness AND lack of communication. To not come out and put geelong away was a black stain on this season...we shit the bed skill wise and allowed them to win clearance after clearance without a whelp
While a 2nd kpd may have been better. Our ruck and midfield were the reason we lost

It's just pure laziness and a lack of accountability.

Outcoached and RoB.

The sad thing is, as Campo is showing, RoB does the things mediocre coaches like.

There is a reason Campo was never able to make it as a head coach, and out of the system now.

Sadly, Nicks is similar.

The 2nd one is Nicks "play it safe" strategy and it is putting us under massive pressure with how they're calling short passes this year. It's so inconsistent you can't rely on the umpire giving you the benefit of the doubt anymore.
