Are we talking about Nathan Murphy? The guy missed like an entire season with a neck injury?

I’d forgotten about that. Only played about 4 VFL games that year (2019?). McInnes similarly only played 5-6 VFL games his first year (2021) with a broken bone, a combined (VFL & AFL) 9 in his 2nd. Murphy played a combined 16+ every other year other than 2020. Macrae’s 1st season he only managed a dozen games. his back injury the end of 2022 and 2023 preseason.

The cancelled competitions in 2020 impacted all 3 but at least Murphy was still training with the senior squad.

Always thought delisting him after just two? seasons was pretty poor form. Good luck to him with his second chance.

Dunno about Liam in particular, but Ed on his podcast has referred to there being a lot of challenges with young players not having the right attitude.

For me it made sense and something we all understand - get any bunch of people together who you need to work closely with, and there’ll be a mix of those who are freeloaders, those who are high performers but aren’t team players, there’ll be the quiet achievers, the natural leaders, etc, etc …

… and as an insider you can see these things that outsiders have NFI about.

You see a bloke who you’d be happy for your daughter to date, but if you were his mate you’d see a side to him that’d make you stay well clear of.

It’d be the same with footy clubs. Especially at Collingwood under Fly - which relies on system / winning attitudes / culture / etc for success.

Who would you have delisted instead?
I can’t remember what I had for breakfast but project talls need more than two years, especially when you don’t have many talls on your list in the first place.

Edit…. On a second look any one of kelly Bianco Murley Draper Ruscoe or Wilson, all of whom got the boot a year later.

One problem, you haven't factored in McMahon isn't very good, fretting over not retaining him is a tad tragic.

time will tell and good luck to him regardless. I still feel young talls need time… more than two years… and especially so if their development is severely curtailed as it was in 2020/21.

You can see it in tonight’s game. No McMahon, no Bombers!

Ps having an opinion is not fretting.

The contracted guys?

I don’t really need to rehash the entire list management from three years ago but yes you make a good point….. we seem to have had too many ordinary players contracted on our list at the same time. They would have been on base salary anyway so hardly an impost to pay them out

It’s not my intention to say anything more than I have already except to say that conceptually it’s preferable to give young tall draftees more than two years and more so in covid years.

(Unless they are deaf of course and it was unfair on them to be listed in the first place! )

Which suggests to me there were some major issues with the guy that the club dumped him after his 1st contract.

I thought it was a bit rough at the time.
However, given he’s been bypassed by all clubs for 2years since, I’m ok with it.
If it works out at Essendon, good luck to him.

At the time I thought we should have given him another year. Thought he was starting to show something.
McMahon moves really well and has nice skills - but the core of the role for our KPFs is physical contest - and that just isn't and never will be McMahon's go.
