VFL Carlton Reserves 2025

Soapy, I wonder if there's been an internal shift from pure development to targetting making the VFL finals?
For several years, if not decades, we have paid utter lip service to the VFL program and treated it with contempt. Here we are today. IMO you cant have a successful AFL program without a successful VFL one (and vice versa). You need both contending.

However the recruiters still have not recruited a genuine kpd gorilla since jones left 4 yrs ago, so there is another list hole
Literally have Weitering and Jsos. And most teams don't even have one as good as those 2. List 'holes' are over exaggerated. The list itself is usable as it currently sits. Maybe if you could remove the high fatigue and mental fragility I guess.. but the 'types' there's enough good there to use for far better than this 'product'

Pies are proof

So are the hawks

Adelaide's list is highly unbalanced too....

This vfl team is unbalanced. They're making a run.

I don’t know but I feel Power has shifted game plan in last month or so

Players are playing for him and look happier and less pressured
Isn't it refreshing to watch a team of kids going out and playing with a sense of freedom. Even the VFL listed players like Dozzi and Hogg and Flynn and Nelson and Ramshaw just going out there and having a red hot crack every week.

Even if they lose, especially to the more experienced non AFL affiliated teams, you know that it won't be through lack of effort.

Even last night, I thought that Collingwood played the better football for the majority of the game with their quick ball movement, but the Carlton boys just hung in there all game and kicked those few vital goals in the late stages when it mattered. GREAT effort and belief.

The VFL boys are all we've got at the moment 😅

We just need to hope they don't get Carltoned before end of year and can keep up this form into finals.

He can run on occasion, but his tank is a way off the best. Saad may have a few efforts a quarter in him, you look at someone like Max Holmes and he can go every time he gets the ball.

Im not saying they need to be replaced, but you can't set up a quick slingshot style game plan with players with sub par tanks or sub par speed. Our senior team has plenty who lack both.
I think this part of the issue Is self wrought. There's plenty of run but the solution to past underperformance or to 'improving' has been a blanket 'be harder and do more'

There's no balance in the current setup. Couldn't run out games last season? Let's smash them and force them to be fitter and stronger - instead they are just wrecked after 10 minutes with enormous latent fatigue and hence we consistently have injuries and skill fades and game fades.

I think Voss constrained himself in his own prison forcing a route and then perpetuating a self fulfilling solution of sorts - there's run there. Not as much as some clubs sure no argument. More than others who play and perform better than us though.

There is a balance and that is where Voss has failed. He has killed the natural, offensive nature of all our players.

You’re onto something Walshy and Surrey, we need a word to describes this phenomena - the de-flairing or extinguishing of natural offensive nature in players.

The Vossination effect… :)

Words from Luke Power

"I’ve probably mentioned the whole team, but it was that sort of game.”

Players seem to struggle to develop in our side.

Even in the Ratten days you could bring Irish blokes out and make AFL footballers out of them or rookie picks.

Voss has played an outdated defensive contested and congested game, offloaded a few of our better runners, brought in more big boddied accumulators and it's finally blown up.

This was always coming, I saw this in Voss' early days.

Lets hope we can rejig the list and modernise it without losing too much of our cream.

I wonder whether Luke would put in his application for senior coach if it becomes vacant? Probably wont get it but he could get on the coaching panel for the senior side.

Power is so passionate and supportive of his players, I'm really appreciating his development role...but you never know?
I think his value to the club is more important in his present role than as an AFL line coach.

I think if Power wanted to be a line coach he'd already be one. He reportedly enjoys development. Suspect hes the type that might not be after more responsibility.

For a small guy, he’s a thumping kick.

Watched him at a couple of training runs over here & he was spanking 55 metre drop punts.

Maybe gets a bit of stage fright in the ones.
When his team mates are burning him and not running to places he can kick to safely, he's going to get a bit of stage fright.

We've seen him dash off HB on occasions and it looks good and achieves the running game style most of us want but I figured it wasn't something Voss/coaches wanted from Saad (and other HBs)?

Basically because when he runs off, he leaves his man and if/when we turn it over he can be stranded out of position and away from his man which can leave our defences vulnerable?

If its not instructional I guess what you're saying (lack of tank) makes sense too.
Ollie dashes off the halfback as well. But Ollie can turn around and get his arse back into defence quicker than Saad can. That's why I want to see Billy getting more time in place of Saad. With Ollie and Wilson running out of defence, we'd be able to implement a more attacking style of football.

He's probably the best VFL/development coach we've had with our VFL side for a long while. I'd be very happy if he just wanted to stay as our development coach. But if the senior coach changes, the new senior coach might want his own person in charge of the VFL side.
