Traded Jack Steele [Traded to Melbourne for 2027 R3 (Melb)]

Those are some rather specific numbers.

From Caro's article:

"Given that St Kilda – who finished 12th, six wins out of the top eight – spent just 83 per cent of its salary cap this season with some of that money still going to Jack Billings (now at Melbourne) and Brad Crouch, the Saints were poised to win most chequebook wars."

Appreciate the citation, cheers mate.

My point is, you might have paid 83% before rounding up the rest this year, but once you add on NWM, TDK, Silvagni, Aleer, Ryan... to say nothing of Mackenzie or Flanders or Wilkie's pay rise, and I'm confident you'll be closer to 100% than 83% this time next year.

Hence why imo its reasonable, once you factor in media reports that Steele was on around $1m in 2025, for one to suspect that the Saints want Steele's cash off their books.

The club has said all along they are going to be ruthless. Yet people here seem surprised that they are following through on what they said.

Is Steele that cooked?

You don't tap a 2x AA and captain of your side to get lost unless you're cooked.

It's not like the Saints midfield is star studded. Outside of NWM and a 55 year old Macrae it's pretty vanilla.

Probaby a 3rd rounder.

If Steele requests a trade, it will be to a club of his choice.
Sounds reasonable.

Hope the Crows are seriously considering him.

Which Hawthorn captain was traded out in recent memory?

I meant to say former captain.

Luke Hodge?

Jack Steele has stood down from the captaincy, in case you didn't see that.

He also hasn't asked for a trade yet. So maybe wait before taking a snipe?

Hodge retired.
He was coaxed out of retirement by Fagan at which point we had to facilitate a trade since he was still contracted.

He also wasn't captain at the time.

Steele I'm sure got tapped on the shoulder and now is unceremoniously getting told to GAGF.

I think its reasonable to assume the reason this is happening is to relieve cap space.

Which means he's on a decent wicket.

I doubt you'd be ditching Steele if he was on 400k next year.

In any case, the salary will dictate what you get in terms of picks.

If its closer to 900k, would any club actually wear that?
We've been told that he is one that has had his contract front loaded so I'm not sure money is the only reason behind it

Look I must say I'm quite impressed with St Kilda this season.

They've been a nowhere club for the last 15 years. Finally trying something different.

Nice guys finish last.

Not sure if it's gonna work but at least they won't die wondering with this list.

Last time they topped up elimination final loss. You hope for their sake it works out spent close $30 million on acquiring these players

I feel its between stay at St Kilda and fight for a spot, or guaranteed midfield minutes in a contender.

I feel he is best 22, but it does depend on if Ross and Enright want to play youth in his place.

The base is a hell of a lot better, along with coaching, development and the board.

St Kilda is doing something differnt in today's game, if it works its flags and if it does not, rebuild again, but beats doing nothing.

Surely Jack Steele would have been a much better target for the Cats? I'd much rather him than Worpel.

Totally, we'll actually be over 100% next year because we have the space (can pay up to 105%/110%) and NWM's contract is frontloaded.

But completely agree we want him off the books, same as we want everyone off the books if they're surplus to needs. Whether his money for next year is $1m or more like $600k because it was front loaded, that remains true.

I get it from the Saints perspective but I don’t love it.

It’s why I don’t really ever blame players who want to jump ship. The club will be loyal to the player until a better player comes along.

Great servant and I hope his career continues in a fulfilling way.
