2025 List Management Discussion - Part 5

Now that our season is over, and news is starting to break - it's time for a fresh thread.

This thread is to discuss all things list management - trades, draft, free agency, delistings and more.
As we are now officially in our off-season, we'll be wanting to keep this thread more strictly on-topic than the previous iterations.
Be respectful. You are allowed to disagree with someone - but play the ball, not the man. Repeat offenders will have their posting rights revoked.

Thanks to Lore once again for this incredibly useful spreadsheet.

Geelong was 3 (presumably ) late firsts.

This is 2 (mid/late) firsts and two walk up best 22 players (Hayward probably being one in particular that fills a real need).

The salary offset of Curnow (who has to be a million plus a year) to these two is middling as well.

Hayward would be a first so lets assume that you do this just as draft picks and lets assume sydney and geelong finish in the same spots the next two years.

Geelongs offer is: 19 this year then 15(ish) the following year and the year after. 19, 15, 15.

Sydneys is: 11, 15, Hayward (lets call him 15) and Florent (lets call him 30). 11, 15, 15, 30.

Plus its two guys with probably 6-8 years of good footy left.
Also, it's player who will improve the, immediately rather than a pick they cant use for 2 years then have to develop so 7 years total until they seem a proper return.

Sydney are also still asking for 22 back. So remove the 30.

It’s an improvement on picks this year in a so-called horrifically weak draft.

So as they were saying. It’s a much of a muchness offer. Do you prefer picks or

Hayward contracted until 2029 - probably gets an additional year

Florent contracted until 2029 - probably gets an additional year aswell.

It’s just a very meh offer, and to be clear - I love when Carlton gets bent over. I’m just talking openly it’s an average offer.
I didnt know about 22 back but i still maintain its alot better than the cats offer.

His highest rated season, 2023, had him come in as the #170th rated player in the comp.

He plays for Sydney and has a unique name so we all think he's good. In reality he's a 27-year-old who has played 184 games of nothing.
I wanted Florent in the draft, he’s local and had some family reasons to want to stay in Melbourne.

I’ve followed him closely, he’s a quality player who’s fallen out of favour with a new couch. He’s versatile, good under pressure with good disposal. We don’t need him but he’d walk into our best 22 imo. He hasn’t played 184 in Sydney because he’s a nothing player nor did the old coach happily give him another 5 years.

Florent can play wing, half back even in a back pocket. Teams will be put off by what Sydney are asking and a contract that has 4 years to run.

Hindsight says we should have walked away from Aleer when we got JSOS...then we wouldn't be in this predicament!
We are not in a predicament. From all of l have read, no other team has an interest in recruiting him. We walked away quickly when a decision was made to not proceed with the trade. I think that the recruitment team decided that he doesn't fit our needs and that's fair enough.

Draws nothing in the sand. Retaining shows it’s the same old Essendon. No acceptance as to what they have become and illusions of their previous grandeur.

What they need to do is burn it to the ground. Accept what they are and build. Bring in some really good experienced leaders from across multiple clubs who can teach the plethora of kids they will have.

Brisbane literally did it. Now look at them.
Richmond did it in the late 00s
We did it at the start of the 00s

The gold standard isn’t twerking your ass for other clubs and embarrassing the football club you love and captain.
Or they can go full north.

I think given the drug fiasco Essendon know how to put together a list. They have more quality than they get credit for, I hope they keep him.

This year will set a dangerous precedent if all these contracted required players manage to force their way out. In what universe will that be a good thing for st Kilda.

We’re usually the prey not the predator.

Exactly, they are basically offering him a base minimum wage. Highly valued obviously 🙄
They were obviously very happy to offload him, but by digging their heels in on the price, shot themselves in the foot.

What they’re offering now shows just how much they rate him - but they got greedy.

184 games would have him 37th in overall games in St Kilda’s entire history. He'll end up playing 250+.

He played 130 odd in a row under Longmire, Cox doesn't like him but that doesn't say he is a nothing footballer.

Haywood and Florent would walk into most if not all teams.

I've got no issue with any player trying to maximise their value in the short space of time that professional sports permits - I've said it multiple times on this forum.

The flip side to that is; players are only worth as much as their output permits or what clubs perceive as their potential future ceiling.

St.Kilda handled the negotiations and comms with the Aleer camp poorly - there's no debate on that, but the negotiations with GWS was pure business.
I think the thing that looks extremely bad is the offer for 900k, its unthinkable to anyone that he's worth that as proven by the GWS offer who know him better than any other club.
Disappointing for Aleer definitely as I'm sure he'd mentally spent half that in his mind.

In the end though I think the right decision was made by the club.
Yikes $900 K - where did that figure come from ?

So no one wants Aleer. Hmmmm.

Jason McCartney right now sitting at AFL HQ with his "Aleer for a future 2nd round pick" trade papers and no clubs interested...

Disagree, he's just angling for a godfather offer they can sell to members. Realistically Bombers fans know he's not playing in their next premiership side (or finals side for that matter) so they just need to be seen to be getting overs.

It's the approach I wish we'd take for Ro tbh, even an F1 is more just fair value than it is overs.
We’d trade everyone based on our history if that was the only criteria.

Wtf
You don't get to 184 games at the highest level of football doing "nothing" on a team thats made 2 grand finals in the last 5 years. I couldnt give 2 shits about the bloke, but this is a genuinely horrendous take :tearsofjoy: :tearsofjoy:
