I think Tanya has gone from defensive player to add attacking beast. What a player. Lulu so impressive. She was everywhere. Lexi deserves credit. Shes so mobile tall and good in the air and on the ground.
Lara is really dependable, Sarah is tough and always involved in heavy contact in the forward 50. And Ruby wasn't half bad either. I was really impressed her with her skills and decision making.

Sadly, with family commitments I didn't get to come or to watch the match other than the mini-match just now. Watching that and reading the comments my takeouts are:
1) We got our determination back and applied the pressure that Carlton couldn't cope with coupled with running with a strong wind in Q1 getting the points on the board. Kennedy a leader (again) in this regard but had some mates this time.
2) Ham and Morphett imposed themselves on the game the best they have so far this year. Makes a huge difference and brings the others with them.
3) Gardiner did what she does every week only better.
4) Those four were the core of our improvement and all of them played their best games so far this year BUT it wouldn't have been enough without a lot of others pulling their socks up. Fish, Pullar, Van Loon have been mentioned but in watching the Carlton goals I couldn't avoid the conclusion that a number of them were gifted by the umps which suggests that our rearguard played solidly and our midfield defence did their jobs well. Make no mistake, the score flattered Carlton.
It will be tough making finals having dropped those two games against Pies and GWS but at least now they know what they need to do.
Cheer cheer!
You have to watch the entire match and you'd soon add Lulu to the 4 you mentioned

It was the best game I've ever seen Lulu play. Probably Montana's best game, too.

Laura Gardiner got heaps of the ball and just bangs it forward any way she can. Her disposal efficiency probably isn't the best but she wins a lot of it. She reminds me a bit of Tom Mitchell in a way.

I thought TK was phenomenal today. She's just so hard at it. Her pressure on the Carlton mids went a long way to setting up our clearance battle. And she hit the scoreboard too. Best on, for mine.

Also key was Morphett who dominated the ruck. She had a great game.

Of the rest, Zippy was her usual self. Sure disposal, composure and a couple of exciting runs.

Cynthia Hamilton was back amongst it. Hit the scoreboard and did some good things.

Chloe looked on early. Kicked a couple before Carlton knew what to do with her.

And another pleasing thing was that when the Blues scored three quick goals at the start of the third we steadied, turned it into an arm wrestle, then won the momentum back again.

Notably the wind got stronger and stronger as the game progressed so it's no surprise the scoring dried up.

Our best performance of the season and a good way to break a losing streak. If we play like that against Melbourne we're a good chance of winning.

I wasn't able to watch the match live or follow the scores. I was pleasantly surprised when I checked my phone after the match had finished 🙂. I'm glad I recorded it!

The ball movement today was fantastic, especially from the backline. How exciting is it when Zippy and Ham go on a run!! Ham could have had 4 or 5 goals today.

Gardiner seems to be everywhere where the ball is. She just doesn't stop.

Kennedy is continuing her great season.

Our marking seemed better and our skills weren't too bad, especially considering the conditions. That wind looked crazy!

How refreshing was it to have commentators that knew our player's names?? Channel 7 broadcast the game. (Next week I am going to be away and I bet we will be a Foxtel game and I won't be able to watch it again. )
A shame we didn't get any post game coverage.

Looking forward to reading everyone's comments about the match.

I organised a whole posse to go to the game (3 of my son's friends and their families) but had to pull out myself after injuring my ankle yesterday. I sent my son along with the rest of them. Instead I watched from home. We don't get tv and so I was trying to stream it and the stream was playing up awfully (which, sadly, it often does). So I really need to re-watch properly on replay to assess better but, at this stage, my votes are:

5 - Tanya
4 - Montana
3 - Laura
2 - Ally
1 - Zippy

Having watched the replay, I'm re-doing my votes:

5 - Tanya
4 - Laura
3 - Montana
2 - Ally
1 - Lulu (bad luck this time Zippy Ya-Ya)

The thing about both Tanya and Laura is that they stayed (and generally do stay) involved the whole game. Montana dipped in and out a little more, although her impact was excellent when did impact. If she had kicked straighter she could have had an extra 4 or so goals and then she might be getting all the votes.

Another thing about Tanya, is that so many of her involvements don't get a stat. She often taps the ball onward by hand or foot, and many of those touches are really influential or at least helpful. In addition she has pretty much the best defensive game of anyone in the team, which also doesn't rack up a lot of the stats (at least not of those that are available to me, and apart from tackles, where she had 7 to Ham's 2).

Lexi had a pretty good game, although she wasted her two shots at goal. Something that caught me by surprise is that she is just 24 years old. Given we are her third club and she is in her 4th season with us, I had imagined she was late 20s. Her best may well still be in front of her.

On reflection I do think it was our best win of the season. Not only did we convincingly beat a strong opponent in a must-win game, but we also showed we could play different ways. I loved that we showed maturity (a) to rebound after Carlton had their only period of dominance early in the third (something we also did after we conceded a big headstart to Geelong in R3); and (b) the way we took control and shut the game down in the last quarter when it was in our keeping.

I am more bullish than Kiama Chris that we play finals now. We must beat West Coast and probably Essendon too but I think we can do that. I am less bullish that we'll beat Dees next week (despite them losing to Freo on the weekend - or maybe especially not after they lost to Freo on the weekend?) but we may. That will just be icing.

Hopefully we have learned a lot from our preceding run of 4 losses, even those against the Pies and Giants, and it will stand us in good stead for the future.

Interested to see the coaches votes which should come out soon.

The other thing I wanted to say was that Poppy Scholz was really impressive for the Blues. She managed to beat first Mitchell and then Tarrant one on one and score goals out of it. She also made McEvoy look slow and lumbering with her speed and agility - I know McEvoy is not our zippiest player (we know who that is!) but Scholz is a key position player, 9 cm taller than McEvoy.

Once again, I'm really looking forward to bringing some fresh tall talent into our team ahead of next season. Potentially we could 3 really good, tall draftees if we can get a pick in before a bid comes for Neyland.

Just looking at the stats, a few things that stand out:

* LG and Zippy both had 100% game time (the only players to do so)

* despite having much more possession, we out-tackled them

* despite having double the inside 50s we still out-tackled them inside forward 50

* despite losing the hitouts we won the clearances 31-16 (13-4 for centre clearances - thanks to Ally and Laura)

* we beat them in the contest but we smashed them on the outside

* about the only other stat they beat us in was in their efficiency converting inside 50s to scores, and that was almost entirely due to Popply Scholz, who was excellent and I think will probably be their only player to get a coaches votes.

Overall, we comprehensively outplayed them

I’m hoping for an Adelaide-like performance (ie how we played against Adelaide) against the Demons this weekend - at worst. At least we’ll be the hunters.

West Coast game is the one that will determine if we (and possibly West Coast) play finals. West coast’s other two games are at home against Carlton and Geelong. They’ll likely start favourites by dint of being at home, but neither is an easy fixture. They might get in if they lose to us but they won’t be counting on that.

Saints have a (probably) unwinnable game against North, a winnable (but not gimme) games against the Bulldogs and they also play Carlton too.

Aside from those two eight point games, Carlton face GWS, a likely win.

It’s a good fixture to end the season, with so many of the bottom-of-the-top nine (or ten) teams playing against each other.

I'm not familiar with most of the Channel 7 commentary team, but they were better than Fox. Jason Bennett was the male - never heard of him. Abbey Holmes I have heard of. Jo Wotton was the other female - never heard of. Alicia Eva was doing special comments/boundary riding - Giants player - is she still playing? I liked the way they shared the commentary around. They didn't seem to get in each other's way. And I didn't notice them mistaking who our players are.

Alongside the others mentioned, I really noticed Grunden's defensive efforts in this one. She did some nice things to help us hold territory and prevent some Carlton slingshotting.
The only thing she did wrong was a really bad tackke miss up near the halfway that allowed Carlton to begin their comeback. She tends to be a little flippant with tackles

I don’t think flippant is an apt word. Her tackling intent is generally pretty good. She just didn’t get into the right position quickly enough. There were plenty of other missed tackles just as bad - from both teams, though more from Carlton.

Im mainly looking at the missed tackles from my team...not too interested in Carlton's ones to be honest. I think she is slow to get into position but shes also not an effective tackler...that particular was the most crucial one. It was harder to miss the tackle than to effect it. It was half hearted if thats a better word for you. It allowed the start of the Carlton momentum. It was a really poor attempt and she was in a position to make it. To m it felt like it wasn't something she put effort into. I like the rest of her game but just not her tackling.

Certainly the right group though maybe Lulu a bit stiff. As usual, attack and accumulation rated more highly than defence. 🤷

Thinking more about these votes:
Montana 5 4
Laura 3 5
Tanya 4 1
Ally 2 3
Zippy 1 2
Looks the most likely combination. Difference between the coaches on Tanya's contribution. My guess is Gowans on the left but who knows?
Scholz unlucky not to score one vote.

Either Kennedy or Morph could be the 4/1 split.

Sorry Arwib I just realised you were speaking about Grunden and I was referring to Grierson with my comments. Grunden was excellent. My error i didnt pay enough attention to the name of the player you were referring to.The same for when I replied to Liz...I was referring to Jas. My fault. Grunden was superb in tackling and defensive pressure like you said

Despite my querying the word I understood you to be using for Grunden, Grunden did miss a couple of tackles herself on Sunday. She wasn’t perfect. She just wasn’t on her lonesome.
