I was re reading the envoys recommendations yesterday and one of them is to have the Holocaust covered at schools. I hadn't initially thought this necessary until realising there is a good % of the population who seemingly have limited or nil knowledge.
I swear we had some basic learning of WW1 and WW2 in primary school, then a bit more in high school as we were older to really understand

EDIT: Before any dedicated history classes

Yeah, it's needed. My wife wrote her thesis on literary representations of the Holocaust and was so surprised at how little people actually knew about it.

But then education across the board is what's needed. We've spoken to Holocaust survivors and been to Auschwitz, something you'll never forget. Similarly, we've been in Delhi talking to Muslims and Hindus who have memories of the horror of partition, and in Cairo from Muslims talking about taking their faith back from extremists.

Education is a must.

Jesus Christ. No wonder the country and world is so full of hatred and anger.

We he’s got a point. The RW media and the LNP could have just offered condolences, called this a national tragedy and offered to join in unity with the government to combat hate and find healing.

But from yesterday morning when victims were still undergoing surgery in hospital Ley and the RW media went on a full blown attack on Albanese. They could have kept their gobs shut and saved the politicking for next week but they aren’t that principled.

We've spoken to Holocaust survivors
As time passes this gets harder and harder. History is being forgotten in real time and it would seem mistakes of the 30s and 40s are getting repeated 80 years later

An Australian Christian terrorist, born, raised and radicalised in Australia shot and killed 51 people in Christchurch at two different mosques. You don't think that put fear into the Australian Muslim community, just like this will do with the Australian Jewish community?

once again this lunatics actions had nothing to do with Christianity

unlike Islamic terrorists whose murders are directly linked to their religious beliefs
A pretty substantial difference

In primary? My memory was more earlier high school. Most of my knowledge is more from personal reading/interest i guess

They also wanted to train Home Affairs staff in anti-semitism.

The first recommendation is that criticism of Israel is anti-semitic and that they would spend all their time making sure that was conveyed at every level of Government. It stopped being a serious document after that.

Everything else was just about more anti-semitism training and awareness, but the definition of anti-semitism was flawed from the start.

They were basically going into every Govt department and institution to tell them that criticism of Israel is forbidden and if you disagree we'll cancel your funding.

If they changed it from anti-semitism to anti-racism and got rid of the conflation of foreign countries with diaspora, then I could get behind them, but it would just be more anti-racism training for everyone.

Israel's efforts to paint all forms of criticism towards them as 'antisemitism' is certainly leading to actual antisemitism, that's for sure. Especially when people learn of their attempts to influence foreign governments through constant lobbying.

They're actually doing the Jewish people a disservice, because they're the ones just going about their daily lives, having to reap the consequences of their government's actions.

People don't like other groups being immune from criticism and being called a racist if you dare do so.

'Islamaphobia' is the same.

You should be able to be critical of certain aspects of another group with being labeled a racist/bigot for it, especially when those same groups are critical of everyone else, provided you're addressing legitimate concerns and not just slinging slurs and hatred.

Being constantly criticised by certain groups and being told in turn you're not allowed to criticise them back is what ends up radicalising people against their respective causes.

I am the youngest in my family so might be mis-remembering what I picked up at home from my siblings compared to what specifically was taught at school

But I do remember having the book Private read to us and watching a WW1 movie in grade 5. So we certainly learned about the ANZACs and some WW2 stuff would have come from that

I'd say it's more of an issue with being able to track the crimes to begin with, due to lack of reporting, poor support for local law enforcement, corruption, etc rather than any deliberate effort to cover them up.

the government seems to deny is happening.

Most murders are reported and the statistics are considered accurate:

This would be especially true for murders of white farmers.

Most murder victims are black, < 1% of murder victims are white farmers.

They have issues with violence due to a lot of issues, but there's just no evidence whatsoever that the government is trying to hide from it, or that there's an swathe of unreported white farmers being killed and covered up.

Don't buy in to the Trump government conspiracy theories about South Africa.

Not sure if you are of similar age, but lots of kids of the 1970s may recall the TV mini series the Holocaust which opened a few eyes

It's an undeniable fact that there have been heaps of farm murders in SA though. This has been happening for decades. I remember my parents talking about it with people from SA back when I was a kid in Perth.

People seem to forget that in these attacks, they kill the farmhands too.

It's certainly a problem in SA although I daresay it's opportunity driven, rather than some kind of specific agenda.

I think my username strongly suggest I am not a kid of the 70s hahaha

Deservedly criticised. Australian gun owners are being targetted because the government was irresponsible enough to give citizenship and gun licenses to Islamic terrorists.
Care to give examples? The recent attack was by someone who came to Aus under the Libs, was allowed guns under the Libs, and was investigated and dismissed as a threat by ASIO under the Libs. But Albo is unfairly coping 100% of the blame, for things that happened when he wasn't involved.

If anything, a lot of the blame should fall on ASIO for not monitoring someone permanently, who had links to others connected to ISIS. And not flagging him to authorities who approve of gun licenses. Instead they dismissed him as a threat after a few months. Which is odd given the day and age, where ISIS is still a big threat world wide. They should have revisited him every now and then.

In fact, world wide, way too many of these terrorist attacks are the result of a failure by intelligence agencies.

Which is exactly what should have happened and should apply to all sides of politics and also to the Media.

Hats off to NSW Liberal Opposition Leader Kellie Sloane. She was present at Bondi in the immediate aftermath and has resisted overtures from the media to stick the boot in to her Labor opponents. Even the Premier Chris Minns complimented her for this in today’s press conference.
