Josh Frydenberg's speech was one of the most genuine heart felt speeches I have ever heard. And I have voted for Gough Whitlam and Labor on an ongoing basis for most of my life.

I continue to stand with all of the Jewish families of the deceased. People like Matilda's family and many, many others who are blameless.

I also stand with people who love Australia and have had enough of the hatred and divison we have seen recently. Regardless of our political preferences..

just dont look at his voting record when it came to hate speech

Aussies have always bonded and walked together in times of tragedy and disaster. Politicians and media that are out to divide in the age of rage baiting are doing exactly what terrorists want.

If anything it is a failure of our security services and public servants. It shouldn't be made into left right debate. It should be seen for what it is and that's attack on a way of life that we all cherish. It's grubby to camp there and exploit the vulnerable for votes and clicks. The less of both we see the better.
The federal Police really dropped the ball, and ASIO really needs to communicate better and maybe the NSW police should have put more resources into these guys rather than Friendlyjordies

please dont buy into this crap.

Frydenberg is absolutely full of it. he's trying to reboot a failed political career thats it.

Frydenberg said absolutely nothing when members of his own party were supporting and or attending rallies involving actual Nazi's. Which resulted in indigenous Australians assaulted by a group of them in victoria and then in NSW having them rock up to parliament holding a massive anti semitic sign.

also its worth noting that in Frydenberg's interview he raised the issues of jewish school's requiring arm guards as a reason to why the current governments support has been inadequate. there's only one problem with this... this started back in 2016! when he was in government!

what's extremely disappointing is the difference in how the country has dealt with these issues in the past and how they're now approached.

the glorification of people like Hanson's who's members actually even spoke at the rallies along side Nazi's or when she was willing to take the NRA money in the USA in exchange to water down australian laws is just pathetic really.
I agree with all of that and thanks for the reminder. Nevertheless I do agree with what he said, his previous silence not withstanding. The Libs/ Nats have been enabling and using racism and religious vilification for decades, especially since Howard brought it into the mainstream during the Tampa election and his complete silence with the emergence of Hanson. He let her do the dirty work and lay the foundations. He then used Crosby Textor to ‘manage the message’ in cahoots with Murdoch. An absolutely disgusting period in Australian politics that has enabled racist and discriminatory political manoeuvring to become more cynically mainstream.

At the end of the day religious extremism is hard to stop and policy isn't going to stop any form of zealot from nazi to islamist from committing acts of terrorism. It might hide it deeper but not change anything.

We need to remember the humanity in each other and not let the way divisive algorithms entrench really extreme view points. Often they are the same thing reframed through a very narrow lens. People form definitive positions on 30 second bites. Repetition makes them ideologically set.

In an already extremely polarised environment any politician, media commentator, journalist or member of the public that is stoking the fires of disharmony is dangerous.

If you get on twitter or FB you get fed your own point of view or one the algorithms think you have fed back over and over. If you are watching bombed kids and trauma all day you have a very different feeling than someone seeing 7/10 videos on repeat.

It feeds very extreme views on both sides. Until people stop grouping each other and blaming we'll never move ahead together. We need leaders now. Not desperate cowards happy to play the game. Unfortunately the politicians we get now are absolute garbage compared to some of the statesmen of the past and they feed the division.

Some of the most critical of Bibi are Jewish. Attacking jewish people makes the moderate voices retreat which is more likely to create the exact environment these lunatics claim that they are fighting against. It's more about psychotic rage than a political statement. I'm not sure that can be stopped by a pen pusher.

Thoughts on the bloke who was "shot in the head" not having a mark on him days later?

I'm not buying into conspiracies. Whoever or however it happened it is a deeply traumatic event and will make jewish people feel less safe. At the end of the day there are shit people in the world and we need to try to find the good ones to lead us. The world seems like it's heading to hell in a hand basket the people leading us aren't helping change course.

If you’re talking about Arsen Ostrovsky, a well known lawyer, he was grazed by a bullet, not “shot in the head” and did have dressing on the wound the next couple of days.

Please don’t tell me you’re buying into the conspiracy bullsh*t running around on Twitter.

15 Australians were murdered, the vast majority from my community. 4 are still critical and there are still kids in hospital. Some of this discussion is completely unedifying .

A group called Zaka was flown in from Israel. They’ve never had to go outside of Israel to do their work, ever - I’ll enlighten you as to what they do. They search for the body parts of the dead, including blood and tissue, and identify which belongs to who, as Jewish law requires you to be buried with as much of your body as you can be. The fact that their expertise was required should give you a clue as to the condition of some of the bodies. An eye witness immediately afterwards spoke of brains blown out and bodies missing limbs.

So, I honestly do not give two hoots what some of you think of Frydenberg. He was a man in extreme pain, as are the rest of our community, who absolutely and correctly held the government to account for their lack of action over the past 2 + years. And not only that, gave some clear suggestions that should have been implemented long ago.

I’m done on this thread.

His head was grazed by a bullet. Head wounds bleed profusely. There goes another conspiracy. Oh what about the conspiracy that the mossad did it. Someone showed a photo and posts on Facebook ( which went viral). Only to have the actual person who is Indian emphatically denying it. Please dont spread conspiracy theories.

It doesn't help.

Great point and I agree

Although it goes both ways. The carry on has gone way over the top. Usually there's bipartisan support in working through these tragedies.

This is the first time I can remember that common decency and strong leadership has been thrown in the bin.

People are demonising the current prime minister like hes a war criminal. The blood on his hands commentary isn't good and is a reflection of further regression in Australian politics and societal views. I think it speaks more to the troubling times the LNP is going through particular with losing their vote to one nation. Bit of an identity crisis.

FFS Seriously

1. What I posted was relevant to what happened.

2. I said the government because they're the ones in power.

3. I'm not going engage in tit for tat drivel.
In case you weren't aware. Most aren't. The current government has been working hard to address anti semitism in in the community especially given the attitudes of previous governments towards things like hate speech.

Some of things theyve done:
  • two grants of over 50m to Jewish community groups to help protect their sites and people
  • increases anti seminism laws for example nazi salutes
  • increased anti terrorism laws
  • increased funding to asio and the afp
  • further support for education particularly Holocaust education

I actually think some of the laws were wn over step like the anti terrorism measures. But the reality is this government has given the various government bodies more power and funding to combat these issues. Theres so many laws they end up contradicting each other almost such is the level of power afforded to government bodies from them.

This is in stark contast to previous liberal governments that wanted to erode hate speech laws. Something frydenberg voted for numerous times.

The question is why after all this did this tragedy still happen. The governments responsibility is to legislate and fund. The actual departments need to actually do the work. There needs to be strong review into how the government departments failed

How is it they weren't dealt with in 2019 is beyond me. How they were able to obtain gun licences is also pathetic.

But equally the opposition right now needs to face more criticism in how theyve approached this since the tragedy occurred but also their attitudes to anti semitism historically and even now.

So far the ban of nazi salutes has meant either its been thrown out of court or a slap on the wrist. The latest person to br prosecuted i think is still waiting sentencing.
Holocaust education is good, but I now feel like I am living in the 1930's again.

The additional funds to help protect sites is great. The Community Security Group ( SCG) runs on an oily rag so to speak and some are volunteers. But why is it that the jewish people need security and guards at all schools? Kindergartens, synagogues, all events.? Why do have to register for v an event and only get told of the address 3 hours before.

When some hostages came out to visit a year ago or so, they were nearly attacked. Some Jewish schools tell their students not to wear their kippar out, I got egged once walking down the street on a friday night. People yelling stuff. I know friends whose kids are scared to walk openly bring jewish.

Easy to say when it’s your not community.

You’re off the mark here. The Jewish community has been raising the alarm for years and nothing.

It was but fried fredo being a fried campaigner needs shouting out.

The carry on, means the terrorists have won.
We should have greaved , we should have collectively agreed that the perpetrators were evil and cowardly.

We should not have let it be an action that made a political impact. Anyone doing this is encouraging more of the same.

My heart goes out to the friends and family's of those lost.

It's always been coming, surprised it didn't happen earlier and hasn't come as a shock to be honest. When you have people marching for Palestine but barely a peep about what has been happening in Sudan, Syria, Yemen or Nigeria, as a Jew, you have to realise where this is headed. This isn't about whether the people protesting are right or wrong, when you see what the focus is/isn't, it's simply an indicator of what matters to people.
As a family we used to go to openly jewish events. We've avoided mass these gatherings for a while now, it's no longer safe to be there.
