The game has changed dramatically since then and further rule changes this year have only made things harder for those types. We're lucky Kennedy and Bont can be genuine threats forward of the ball rather than inside mid or bench.
It would have been hard to predict at the end of 2016 but surely the shift should've been made earlier then 9 year and be more dramatic then just removing Kennedy.
Just to clarify, my reference year was 2021 not 2016:
  • We had made a GF with Bont + Dunkley + Libba + Macrae as either big-bodied or predominantly inside mids
  • Melbourne had won the flag with Petracca + Oliver + Viney + Brayshaw of a similar mix
  • Ollie Wines won the Brownlow + the top 10 was full on one-paced inside mids including Parish, Steele, Mitchell types
There are obviously challenges to the above: some of those guys could play forward, could burst from a stoppage, Brownlow voting will always favour inside mids, etc. but agreed the game has dramatically changed.

Even still I think its a reasonable question that if you already have Cripps, Walsh and Kennedy at the club and are bringing Hewett in as a free agent (end of 2021) then should you be trading your pick 6 for Adam Cerra as well? If Voss was instrumental to that decision then he's accountable for the current issues.

Sorry for shifting the goal posts. I was using the death of the third man up rule as the catylist for the changing of the game. I think the writing was on the wall at that point but you're right, by 2021 6-6-6 had entrenched itself and further hightened the change. Whoever at that point doubled down should certainly fall on the sword.

Hopper and Taranto are two more examples of a falling club selling the farm for players not suited to the modern game but that doesnt have anything to do with your original point.

Yep agreed on Hopper and Taranto, and on the flip side well done to GWS for casting them out when they still had value. Adam Kingsley joined at the end of 2022 and that was the off-season they moved on those players.

Phil Davis in his discussion with Gerard Whately last week touched on a bunch of this.

You wouldn't want to be throwing out a coach if he's trying to play a game style based on his playing list, which is completely incompatible to how the modern game is being played.”

“And so if you look at Voss, you'd be like, okay, I have huge, big, strong midfielders. Like, you know, if Cerra is back this week, all of a sudden you got Cripps, Hewett, Cerra, trying to run around that midfield. No one has a midfield like that. Like no one, it's like, it doesn't work like that.”

“I remember during a last year, or was it before the Giants, I know that Adam Kingsley told a few midfielders that said, if Tom Green is in the midfield, you will not be in the midfield. You are too similar. We need to be able to run.”

Blicavs being rested this week so his 300th will be against us next week along with the likely return of Danger and Stengle. Sigh.
Meh. Danger is getting old and I remember the Cats lost Enright's 300th against Melbourne at the Cattery!

Holy crap, that plastic franchise has been getting 20 million a year and still can't get a decent crowd, only 97, 13-and-under boys signed to participate in grass roots footy.

Footy icon Gerard Healy drops bombshell AFL report
A footy legend has dropped a bomb on the AFL with staggering claims about “the greatest trainwreck” in the league’s history.

“Now, given that we are in the 15th year of the Giants, and if you include the development budget of just under $20 million per year, we have spent the best part of three quarters of $1 billion fighting a football war of expansion that we started, you’d expect the number of kids signing up to be significant.

Time the AFL admit they have lost the war for Western Sydney, and that the Giants were placed in the wrong spot, purely to try and upstage Rugby, with zero thought for the long term stability of the Giants themselves. Massive failure. Need to restart and try again.

I very much don't love this part of Healy's rant:

Healy called for the league to invest more money into the project to save it from collapsing.

“A new plan and hopefully a very, very big budget, $50m to $60m or more, is going to be needed and ticked off on by the commission ASAP... if the game’s expansion is to be resuscitated,” he said.

Surely, the obvious question is to ask what was being done with the existing $20m annual budget. That's not an insignificant amount of money, and an amount that Healy obviously does not think has been wisely spent. So why does he think that throwing 3 times that much into the budget will change anything? There's no depth to his reasoning at all.

I’ve seen enough, fold them to merge down in Tassie so we don’t have a 19th team.

It also won’t compromise the next 100 drafts and dilute the talent pool far too much, it’s already too stretched.

Yep. Throw more money into the void that'll fix it.

Carlton with one of the limpest walk outs you’ll ever see. Very day of my execution vibes.

In other news, This Crows kit is very appealing to the eyes.

Where do they think this money is coming from, yes some of it comes from the TV deal, but a portion also comes from the big clubs.
Members from other clubs are propping up this complete failure.
💯 sure a struggling Vic club wouldn't get this unlimited budget, at what point do the AFL realise this is a failed investment?

Just took a quick peak at the crows board.

I didn't realise they hated Nicks so much.

Relocate them to Tassie to save them pinching our players

They never seemed big on him. They were rebuilding but their first a lot of years under him were pretty bad

Seemed to win a few fans back last year before they shit the bed in finals

Good to see the AFL finally got a good rule in last disposal and it took them a month to **** it up. Punishing blokes for running after the ball to get a touch on it and reviewing every out of bounds.

Welcome to Andrew Dillon's AFL. Can't have anything good for a month.

The AFL's thinking seems to be "lets make every rule as complicated as we can and make sure its impossible to umpire, with no clear reason why or no articulated problem that we are trying to solve"

Getting to 300 games after not debuting until 22 years old is remarkable. I don’t think anyone else that has played 300 has been older than 20 on debut, and that was only a couple of players like Breust and Goldstein.

Zorko was 23 when he debuted and has now played over 300. He's probably the only one.

Talking about Zorko, has anyone seen Final Siren, the series on Netflix, I softened up a little on Zorko after hearing his story, he is sort of a aggressive Moz.
