SpaceX took a pretty significant step forward today with their Spaceship test flight. Does anyone want to revise their vote?

Thread starting November 2016, so the 10 year cut off is November 2026.

Musk said last week that he was "highly confident" of a manned mission in 2026.

If I had to put money on it then I think 2028 will be the first manned mission.

assume 2026, thats 50 years after the first probe landed in 1975.

Just shows the unneccesary baggage of trying to send human proxies instead of automated ones

(and of course if the humans do get there, they will be accompanied by automated proxies which will be magnitudes more useful than the humans)

Ars technica has a good article about SN8 launch with some nice pictures, commentary and the full video, see: So, it turns out SpaceX is pretty good at rocketing | Ars Technica The launch doesn't happen until 1 hour 48 minutes in the video, then it's 10 minutes of full rocket fun, culminating in a very satisfying explosion. It's amazing how quickly the craft reorients itself. Low pressure in the fuel feeds caused it to 'land' with excess velocity, other than that the launch was a success.

And I'm saying its a waste of effort in itself. But probably great for his PR.

And if electric cars are so great, how come they aren't a cheap as regular ones? That would help mankind not be sold to rich kids to make them feel good about themselves

But that's just me. Some people see Zuckerberg pledging his fortune to cure all diseases. I see him getting int pharmaceuticals at. Reduced tax rate

How long before the Mars program wants public resources not sure it can do it as a private affair

commercialising space, some people are prepared to pay millions to enter space. Mining near earth asteroids for metals is another possibility. economists believe that the first trillionairs will be through space mining.

For the first time SpaceX Starship launched successfully, making it the largest object to leave the earth. All 33 Raptor engines on the Super Heavy booster started up and worked for the full ascent. Starship’s own six engines also ignited correctly in the vacuum of space, allowing for a flawless orbital insertion before powering down. The team also carried out the successful opening and closing of Starship’s payload door. The ship was lost on re-entry but it was never planned for it to be recovered.
