Leaders 2019

Probably not necessary for Nat to say anything about Lachie given he no longer a plays for the club.
Yes I agree, plus it would stick in my craw to talk about "leadership" when a player who has been in a leadership position and already contracted to a club turns tail and moves to another club. No need for the hypocrisy.

I was just thinking about the leadership at Richmond and Collingwood in 2017 and 2018 after reading the release about our leadership group for this year. It has been well documented how Hardwick and Buckley did a lot of introspection their respective offseason and open themselves up and became much vulnerable within the footy team, resulting in creating closeness and openness with the entire team.

while it has been generally stated by most of the players how much they respect Ross Lyon and how supportive he has been especially through the rebuilding of the team, I have watched Fyfe's leadership style and wonder if he needs to go on a similar journey to really gel the team and get the last one thousandth of a per cent of commitment from every single player.

thoughts?
What about Fyfe's style makes you think that? Looking good to me. All young captains need time to grow into the role, but he seems to be doing it just fine.

I totally agree. He is a young captain who is doing a good job.
The reason why I think that is kinda hard to put my finger on specifically, hence me asking for other's thoughts on how he is getting on, especially from those who watch on at training.
But when I watch interviews etc it seems to be a little bit robotic or "leadership by numbers" like. It reminds me of young professionals who are trying sound like they are saying the right thing. But maybe this is more to being more considered when talking in front of media...

I get what you are saying. Michael Clarke early days also came off like this to me.

In AFL, talking to the media is a minor part of leadership. Verging on irrelevant. That includes the coaches as well. On field, off field, and at training is where you see and want good leadership.

Fyfe staying, accepting a reasonable contract, how he helps the young guys develop and the likes of Hogan settle in, how he trains and plays: that's 95% of it.

I’ve harboured similar doubts for a year or two. We all want Fyfe to be an incredible leader to match his on field and media capability. But I wonder how much of our topsy turvy results over the last 3 years relate to leadership on top of the “young and developing” side thing. Why did we implode in 2016? How can we lose to Geelong in the manner we did and then push Collingwood to the limit the following week? I guess Neale’s departure adds fuel to any fire.

It very difficult as a fan to assess leadership performance other than through results.

I do think we’re on the right journey though. The Gold Coast camp seems to be a deliberate effort to improve on the soft skills/people side. I also agree Fyfe has time on his side and there’s every chance he can mature into a really strong leader, as well as player, for us.

Don't know about the rest of your post but I think I know the answer to this one.

Pies game was at Optus and the Geelong one wasn't.

We play home and away every second week and the year before I watched Walters miss a shot at Kardinya to win with the last kick of the game!

Yep the year before it wasn't a problem, it was more a roll of the dice each game to decide if we are terrible or not.

In 2018 it was easy

On the road -> Playing Carlton -> Turn up
On the road -> Not Playing Carlton -> Don't turn up

Freo were younger last year than they were the year before. Younger the team the more fluctuations week to week.

Plus 2017 was mid year just after the bye, while last year happened in probably the most struggle-street-game (r22) for a young team longtime after any possibility of finals was put to bed.

Fyfe has changed as a leader and I think will continue to change, reading about how he acknowledges he made a mistake handling blakely surfing incident warmed my heart as leaders who acknowledges mistakes often grow and become the best leaders.

Would've thought Stephen Hill would be in the group? Or probably wants to focus on fitness instead? Brad Hill would be stiff
Based on what? Stephen is quietly spoken and shy. Barely on the park. Hardly leadership material.
