That Roar prediction is beyond a joke. To suggest we could win one game this year is just absolutely laughable and setting themselves up for a massive failure. Even if we were absolutely crap and worse than last year I'd still expect us to win the same number of games given our better draw. I get it that when you're down on a team you see them losing every game and he probably did the ladder predictor and it just came out that way, but the chances of us winning one solitary game would be about 2000-1. Hilariously bad prediction.

With Richo, he's a very good middler. It took a bad draw and injuries mounting for him to fall out of his vanilla band of middling just outside the 8. For years he's been able to have us above better lists like Collingwood, Essendon etc. I doubt Richo has anything to jump us right up the ladder other than players improving, but I fully expect him to do his -win against the weak teams and jag a couple against the next tier teams and probably one really good win just to frustrate us. 9th to 14th is Richo's beige zone. The campaigner owns it, everyone else is just resting there.

From the Roy Hodgson school?

Could that mean that Geary isn't retaining the captaincy?

I suppose there's not much you can take from that tweet but would they go to the trouble of 'announcing' Geary?

What happened last year? I can't remember.
If that was 3/4 pace, better set our expectations of full speed pretty low.
Edit: This was in response to BT's video post, sorry!

It was a 2 second clip, maybe he ran a bit longer perhaps?

Players choice.

Suck it up.
Not really a choice. More like a lack of options to choose from. Geary is the default as he is the only player over 28 who will probably get a game every week. Until we find someone better we have no real choice.

On a separate but somewhat related note, I was looking at some stats around Hanners and how he compares to our existing mids. Random point, but according to footywire he is lighter than everyone on our list excluding Lonie, Long and a couple of new draftees. He is listed at the same weight as Gresh and Clarke FFS.

Anyone else think our fitness staff really need to get the boys running and stripping a few more kg's from their playing weight?

Captains need to be 28 or over now? Come on, they chose him over other starters like Steven, Ross, Roberton et al. Maybe he is the best leader there at the moment. Maybe, just maybe, the supporters should give him some credit every now and then.

Last year Nick Coffield’s main concern was working out what was for dinner.

But in 2019 the young Saint has bigger fish to fry.

Coffield is determined to break into the club’s midfield, sooner rather than later.

But his ability to play in defence and on the wing means he’s more likely to be deployed in a number of roles throughout 2019.
Round 1Brought to you by sportsbet

“It’s sort of like a double edged sword,” Coffield told foxfooty.com.au.

“It’s hard to sort of really get settled in one position when you get thrown around, but it’s easier to pick someone who can play a few roles.

“It’s a bit hard like that, but I’m used to it, having done it back in U/18s. You just have to take it in your stride.”

Coffield played 10 matches in his debut season, after being selected with Pick 8 in the 2017 draft, one pick after his housemate and fellow midfield aspirant, Hunter Clark.

The duo have been earmarked as long-term on-ball prospects.

But Coffield is cognisant he may have to bide his time in defence before a permanent position as an inside midfielder becomes available.

“I had a chat to Richo the other week and I said I was happy to play any role as long as I’ve got a role,” Coffield said.

“I feel like my best footy in the long run will be in the midfield, but I might just have to bide my time and play in another position to get senior experience until one day hopefully a door opens up or I’m good enough to get a game in there full time.”

Coffield will be battling the likes of Dan Hannebery, Jack Steven, Seb Ross, Jack Steele and Clark for a spot in St Kilda’s engine room in 2019.

And in order to do just that, the 19-year-old has been stalking Hannebery’s every move.

“I’m just trying to sponge off him and follow him around with the way he trains and the way he acts. He’s first class,” Coffield said of the former Swan.

“It has been pretty surreal since he’s come to the club.

“I watched him as a kid: watched him win premierships, being an All-Australian.

“It was a bit daunting when he first came in, but he’s such an approachable guy and has really helped out me and Hunts and some of the younger guys.”

Coffield hasn’t just been picking Hannebery’s brain, however.

Recently retired Melbourne Storm superstar Billy Slater was appointed to a newly-created leadership role at St Kilda in October — and Coffield had nothing but glowing praise for the rugby league great.

“Billy’s awesome,” he said.

“I went and had coffee with him a few weeks ago. He’s got so much knowledge, even though it’s in a different code.

“He knows what it takes to be an elite player, having been a part of a really good team for a long period of time.

“He’s given us little tips on things not to miss and things we should be doing in our first to four years.

“He said not to wait. If you’re good enough now then you can play.”

Dont look at Footywire for stats like that. They are generally woefully innacurate and height is rarely updated after they get drafted.

I was actually looking at something else re Hanners and just noticed this by coincidence. Appreciate the tip though

Anyway I just looked at the club site and its exactly the same. As is the AFL one. Maybe they are all off, but even if it is half right it is still a really big discrepancy.

I just would not have expected our new experienced hard bodied mid to be 5-10kg lighter than all our other mids. Considering he is known for his elite running that to me says that we may not be conditioning our players as well as e sometimes assume.

Maybe that’s why he’s more banged up than hard bodied....

Yeah I dont know where they get the figures from but I believe its often the club websites themselves which just dont really ever get updated.

Riewoldt for example was forever listed at 193 but is more like 195/6 when you see him standing next to 196cm Bruce. Membrey as well is 188 listed but I reckon he is more like 190.

Actually really happy with fitness levels this year .
Keep saying it the vibe is different at Moorabbin we look organised, the players , the training services
can confidently say every player is lighter by significant margin.
As for the selection of Captain we did have a choice and taken the easy one , rather than the harder one.

Probably the only decision disappointed in , compared to all the other positives .

While I thought Seb should be captain this year, I find it hard to criticise the decision considering it's the players who decide on it and if they feel like Geary is the best representative of the playing group, then so be it. They are the only people who are really affected by who the captain is.

Interesting to see collingwood already played there intraclub. Then playing a practice match against melb. Then have there 2 jlt games. There the elite of the comp. Mmmmm Are we doing enough to get match hardened. Theres a serious gap between the good clubs and minnows like us.

They have just been doing match sim and don't have an official intraclub. So I guess we should probably cancel our intraclub then because Collingwood aren't doing one.

We have also had multiple intra club games using umpires - maybe we are setting precedent?

I really wouldn’t look into anything other then are we fit enough

There is a champion in Coffield and I hope he becomes the player he is capable of.

Funny story prior to Christmas they were doing transition drills. The first few times Nick didn’t really impact the drill and deferred. Got absolutely hammered by the coaches who stopped the drill. Next 4-5 he demanded the ball and we transitioned from end to end and it was the best passages of play in the entire session. Can make a huge difference. Just hope it’s us who has a kid come on quick this season.

From watching he and Hunter last season, I got the feeling that Hunter will be the better of the two. He's just so clean with his hands. Maybe they'll both make it. Would be a great draft if they can both step up.

Their x 2 champ.

They also started pre season 4 weeks after us as well.

Yet West Coast, the premiers, and Richmond, most dominant team over the past 2 years, haven't.
But I guess that doesn't match the argument that every thing the club does it wrong.

Hunter showed a bit more in the second half of the season but reckon Nick was cooked.

Watching him move off half back early last season when fresh, he reminded of the way Rhys-Jones moved, smooth as silk.
Was getting called Froffield for a reason.

That is correct hence why playing group should not whinge if not selected , even if their form is outstanding
because the last person dropped is the Captain .

Is benefiting from Hannebery, communication to Coffield outstanding.
