Training 2019 Preseason

There is a champion in Coffield and I hope he becomes the player he is capable of.

Funny story prior to Christmas they were doing transition drills. The first few times Nick didn’t really impact the drill and deferred. Got absolutely hammered by the coaches who stopped the drill. Next 4-5 he demanded the ball and we transitioned from end to end and it was the best passages of play in the entire session. Can make a huge difference. Just hope it’s us who has a kid come on quick this season.

Sometimes we tend to forget that the draftees are just kids. Despite their high levels of athleticism and footy nouse, they still share the same vulnerabilities as most other teenagers.

Sometimes half the battle is just convincing them that they are both good enough and strong enough to be given top spot. We shouldn’t forget that last year Coffield was the youngest on our list.

That is why I have so much belief in Hunter. He clearly believes in his ability and speaks about training himself to become an elite player of the competition, not just cracking into the best 22.

Coffield looks like a real talent to me.

His decision-making is exceptional and is one of those things that can't be taught. He has that extra second (e.g. Pendlebury) which can open up the entire field. Plus his skills are quite good and he is very quick for a kid who's 191cm.

I think he tailed off due to fatigue last year so this year he should be able to last a bit longer.

The Saints can't be concerned about what other clubs are doing in preseason. Whose to say what Collingwood, West Coast or even Richmond are doing in the preseason will set them up for success this year. We don't always have to be sheep. Maybe what we are doing is the best path for our young group and the stage of development they are currently at.

I just hope we don't have an attitude that the older guys have automatic first dibs at the midfield spots. After a 4 win season every possie should be up for grabs this preseason

Maybe some other teams have kids step up because they're given the opportunity without having to bide their time.

I have no idea how it works inside the club but i just hope we aren't setting boundaries

I posted this yesterday in terms of how the club plays it.

My personal hope is that we get our most talented players on the park and go from there... Within reason and with a balanced 22.

However, coming off a 4 win season, I fear the temptation will be to go safe in order to get some early wins in the board.

In some ways, our hand is forced due to a few early injuries.

Interesting to see collingwood already played there intraclub. Then playing a practice match against melb. Then have there 2 jlt games. There the elite of the comp. Mmmmm Are we doing enough to get match hardened. Theres a serious gap between the good clubs and minnows like us.
We would've started playing practice matches but unfortunately all our players hamstrings fell off

Except for Hanners, his whole left leg fell off..

I missed the "Signifiant time" part but my point still stands that doing everything you can to "stay competitive" also doesn't work as literally one team who works that model has won a premiership and that was 7 years ago.

WCE (whats rebuild?)
Richmond (bottom out occurred under wallace, their approach under dimma was to become competitive as quickly as possible, not accumulate more picks. instead of sacking dimma and rebuilding they decided to become competitive as quickly as possible again)
Hawthorn (their approach after the first flag was to get in as much ready made talent as possible and to stay competitive, they didnt rebuild when they fell back down again, when everyone said they should)
Sydney

thats far enough back before you get to the previous era pre free agency

sides challenging that are deciding not to bottom out and trade away. i started writing this list before i realised its pretty much every club.

He can also extract his own footy and break from the pack quite easily. It was on display from the few training sims ive watched.

I imagine we might get to see Max King strut his stuff after the bye. I dont know about the new Jack though. When is he likely to play?

Rd 16 onwards for me if at all this year. As soon as his body is ready he’ll need to hit the VFL, he has spent a year on the sidelines, will need some match fitness, confidence, and experience against matured bodies.

Not sure about Jack. Will probably get some good VFL experience later in the season, but they’ll stay cautious with him.

Players choice.

Suck it up.
Really ?

All we have heard is how great Hanna has been with his leadership at training showing the boys how it is and setting the standards, doesn't matter if he doesn't even play a game.
So what does that say about our leadership that we had last year ? It says it was that bad the club took a gamble on a bloke that is past his best because our on field leadership was that bad and that last year when needed no one stood up.
So IMO Geary shouldn't be in charge of on field leadership had his chance and failed

But lets just see how things go and hope it all turns around

I’m tipping Ben King. The ball is going to be heading his way a lot this year.
that'll give the trolls some ammunition. "hur dur St Kilda had the better pick and picked the wrong twin" etc... but that will make it even more sweeter when we end up with both of them :moustache::cool:

I am likewise getting fired up and optimistic about this season but if I see the putrid effort I saw last preseason my optimism to pessimism transformation will be instantaneous.

Jlt matches are meaningless for teams in the top 4 of last year, somewhat important for the others and vital to confidence for the teams that finished in bottom 4 like the saints. As we have seen with our goal kicking confidence breeds success and we need to be at least competitive this pre season in all facets of our game
