If that is the case then Kreuzer and Marchbank have to come straight in.

IN: Kreuzer, Marchbank, Kennedy, JSOS
OUT: Phillips, Garlett, Murphy, Fasolo or Curnow if injured
I know it seems the case, I just fear for Marchy and big kruze they both need a good run without injury

This is true, both are very important players and need to be manged. I would like to think the club has planned for this knowing that there was a VFL bye approaching. Pretty sure Bolton said we will see them both play next week (at some level).

We have really missed them onfield this season and in the past when they have been injured. We really need to start winning now, let's start next week against the Swans. We should beat them comfortably if we perform like we have the last two weeks. I'm just sick of losing.

Against Port - which was a better effort than against Richmond:

1. The midfield got smashed - no one providing Cripps a chop out and some body on body help - enter Kennedy
2. Charlie was off for 3/4 - forward structures went with him - we still haven't seen three talls playing together for a whole game
3. Easy to 'pot' any of the kids really including Polson they all mucked up on a few occassions - but Port went after players at every opportunity - someone needed to put a serious block on that bald headed peanut and put him on his arse for starters - Cripps needs a mate on ball with him - big time.

Confirmation of the following for me

1. McGovern is a GUN - single handedly lifted the side back into the game with a crunching tackle and goal and then another goal - Cripps went straight to him.
2. SPS has arrived and needs to have more confidence in himself - was excelelnt on ball / HB and wing
3. Harry will be a GUN - we need to find a way to minimise his ruck time

Re- Confirmation of

1. Murphy is not the bloke who should be demanding the ball - his execution has been terrible for a long time now and I'm embarrassed watching him burn off his team mates by skirting contests and avoiding going in for tackles - yes he stood under a ball - where was his support there btw - other mids - that was a telegraphed danger situation Port got 2 to the 'contest' where was Carlton's second? A bit of 'self preservation' was going on...

2.Simpson is not much better and Thomas is better than both in general play but runs out of legs against faster younger opposition - should be playing forward pocket. btw - sick of seeing Murphy and Simpson have their on field 'private conversations' only to proceed to play to each other ignoring other players and options and STUFFING each play up - time is about up fellas.

3. Phillips isn't as bad as people are saying - but he doesn't have the game experience to do the big man in the ruck stuff - needs to mongrel up in a smart way - lashes out in frustration and gives away too many contests and frees. Harry cant play against serous ruckmen - they will suck him into frees every time- and they do.

4. Ed was better yesterday, but in the absence of Kennedy - Cripps could have used him on ball to help smash the hard taggers rolling through on the Captain and Garlett I thought was pretty good - except he plays defense like a forward goal sneak - trying the quick taps here and there instead of taking harder smarter lock down options - he is an attacker not a defender - should be playing in forward line (if anywhere). I thought Newman had an 'ordinary' game as well. Seriously - Bolton better get Cripps some on ball support - because he is being unmercifully scragged and smashed by opposition bigger bodies rolling through on him all game - because really Dow/Walsh/Fisher are all small bodied short people atm - and get progressively steamrolled as game goes on - not for lack of effort - just body size. I would be COACHING mids how to COMBINE and put some HARDNESS into their PROTECTION of each other- right now opposition has a FREE PASS on Cripps - totally unacceptable.

All this is part of developing a whole field capabilty - last years we were concerned with depth - now the word is COHESION - to get that you need an even spread of MONGREL SMARTS.

We have to battle on with a few VFL players whilst the injured get fit - Sydney cant be allowed to win the contested ball in domination fashion as Port did - Buddy will carve us up and Reid Blakey Heeney Parker would have a field day.

No use speculating on Polson/Fasolo/Gibbons if Midfield is giving them nothing - we need Q1 effort from midfield for 4 quarters.

I think we have to plan for Simpson/Murphy/Thomas not being automatic selections by the end of the year - so there are a few 'midfield' spots coming up for grabs over the next 20-30 games. LoB is an elite runner and kick - but he lacks the body size atm to play wing against bigger blokes ( not that Mrphy is a great choice there ) LoB will be playing wing - because that is wher ehis skill set is best suited versus all other medium to longer term prospects currently on books.

As for HBF suggestion I thought he would be a good fit for that at start of year- but Bolton has gone with Garlett for now - lets not forget Marchbank/Williamson/McCreadie becoming available will see a huge rejig in defense.

IMO you are wrong re Plowman not being as good as Marchbank - Marchbank was being played on a wing HBF last year on the occasion he was available -- NOT as a key defender Plowman is a better and smarter lock down third defender- very flexible. Plow I suspect would also be an ok larger bodied midfield option -which would have been pursued if injury hadn't done what it has done to us over the last 12 months - it was stated end 2016 that that was on the cards- same for Docherty to spend more midfield time.

Great effort by Phillips but the ruck is an Achilles heel for us. He competes around the ground well but is so so at centre bounces. Around the ground ball ups and throw ins are another weakness.
Lobbe is a better ruckman but not good around the ground. Kruezer is definitely not a dominant tap ruckman but gives us more at ground level so we improve the ruck when he comes in. We must break even with Sinclair at worst or else I’m afraid the game will be decided in the ruck.

In JSOS Kennedy O’Brien
Out Garlett Fasolo Ed Curnow

Newman - Weitering - Plowman
Simpson - Jones - Thomas
Fisher - Cripps - SPS
Murphy - Curnow - McGovern
Polson - McKay - Gibbons
Phillips - Setterfield - Dow
Kennedy - JSOS - Walsh - O’Brien

It won’t happen but that’s what I would do

Ed isn’t impacting as a forward (because he’s not one)
Garlett needs a few weeks in the VFL to read the play as a defender

Fas isn’t fit and jack can play his role and rotate into the middle

My changes:
- Lobbe in for Phillips - I like Phillips, but think he hasn't quite delivered in the first two games
- if Curnow is injured and Kreuzer is available, then I'd give Kruezer a run up forward with stints in the ruck
- Gibbons out, Thomas up forward, O'Brien to play hbf and wing
- Fasolo out, Murphy forward, Kennedy in the midfield rotation
- Garlett out, Silvagni in. May need both talls to cover Buddy, so having Silvagni coming in for that utility role seems like a good tactic.

I have to agree. Stocker is a mid, but we are giving him skills to play off half back so we have some versatility.

LOB could well be a good hbf, particularly given his kicking is a strength of his.
So long as its just for the skills. Wasted a third of Gibbs best years playing him behind the ball. Loved Ratten but that was always my biggest question mark of his time in charge

Garlett is still scared of body contact. Not willing to put his body on the line. Tries to kick the ball off the ground too often because he wants to avoid trying to pick up the ball and getting tackled. Kicks and hopes...

Play LOB, at least he's willing to take a hit and put his body on the line.

And yet when Rioli or Butler or Gray or Papley or Buddy or Sidebottom or whoever else does it they're amazing players with next level game sense.

No issue with Garlett trying to soccer it forward under pressure, gaining 20 or 30m before the stoppage is forced can be a good thing.

That's fair. If LOB was playing better than the wingers in the team ahead of him, then it wouldn't be a consideration. Gibbs was a waste because we didn't have better players in the middle.

My ideal changes will depend a lot on the status of Kreuzer, Marchbank and C. Curnow.

The absolutely obvious change (to me) is Kennedy for Fasolo, which means E. Curnow, Gibbons and Polson will play mainly as forwards and Kennedy will play predominantly through the midfield.

Casboult (shudders...) is my change for C. Curnow, if required. His ability to be 2nd ruck and keep McKay and McGovern forward is the key, and I'm willing to have Levi running around for that to happen.

Marchbank and Kreuzer replacing Garlett and Phillips are obvious, if fit.

Best case scenario:

In: Kreuzer, Marchbank, Kennedy
Out: Phillips, Garlett, Fasolo

Worst case scenario:

In: Casboult, Kennedy
Out: C. Curnow, Fasolo

You reeled off a bunch of forwards to defend Garlett kicking off the ground in defense. If Garlett was playing small forward.....Noone would question his kicks off the ground.

Fasolo keeps his spot. Needs a few weeks to work his way back into it. Thought he played okay yesterday

In: Kennedy (Casboult)
Out: Garlett (Curnow)

The situation I was thinking of was when he tried to soccer off the ground and totally missed the ball...and the ball kept rolling towards Port's 50. When you're playing as a defender you play the percentages. Those players you mentioned aren't even defenders...

Garlett isn't a defender either. But apparently the club has hopes he can become one. Or maybe he is simply the least worst alternative we have to keep the seat warm. Take your pick.

One thing I am pretty sure of is that if and when he is moved back forward, he is going to be a far better small forward for the experience. Yes it's only JLT, but when he was given a brief run forward late in JLT2 he looked an entirely different player than we saw last year. More composed, more involved, harder at the contest, more repeat efforts.

A fit Kennedy far too good to be playing VFL. JSOS the same.

For me Fas has shown very little needs to prove himself in the VFL. JSOS in for him.

I’d be loathed to drop Polson for a slower player in Kennedy. Gave us a real spark against Port. Similarly I wouldn’t be keen to drop Setterfield who has so much upside. That leaves me with Garlett, who has improved each week but does one or two stupid things that have cost us.

If Kreuzer and Marchy are fit it makes it all the more difficult. Part of it will depend if Charlie is OK.

So, I could see Krooz, Marchy, JSOS and Kennedy come in for -

Charlie, Fas, Garlett and Flip.
