Gibbons had poor position on more than one occasion. When the ball was coming in long, he should just about be turning, facing the goals/forward contest, hitting that contest at speed, not still facing the kicker and or contesting the mark.

Has to be further up the ground, with at least 2 key forwards behind him

I was more concerned at delivery into f50, and whereabouts of the talls. At least he presented; not once but over and over; I'd be more annoyed if he went missing in action altogether.

This is what I’m talking about. His ‘presenting’ was just bringing his man to the contest. He should have been drawing his man away. It was the wrong option to ‘present’ in that way.

The ball was also kicked poorly to him. Charlie putting it on his head in the goal square instead of anywhere in the 25 meters in front was particularly galling.

The positive thing is that this is something that can be easily fixed with some good leadership; both in game, and coaching.

Assuming we only cut players from the extended bench and not on field, I’m hoping for this

IN: Kreuzer, Kennedy, Silvagni
OUT: Lobbe, Setterfield, Casboult

And then after a little restructuring maybe something like this

FB: Newman, Jones, Plowman
HB: Simpson, Weitering, Marchbank
C: Walsh, Cripps, Petrevski-Seton
HF: C Curnow, McKay, Fisher
FF: Thomas, McGovern, Murphy
FOL: Kreuzer, Kennedy, Dow
INT: E Curnow, Silvagni, O’Brien, Gibbons

Makes sense and sounds like something that can be learnt pretty easily

Lacks goal nous, finishing ability, quality disposal and clean touch.
The issue is he's a midfielder, an accumulator. 2 Liston Trophies racking up huge possession and centre clearance counts over the last 2 years. What in any of that would suggest he can play as a small forward. Has not played a game of VFL in 4 years as a small forward. How that doesnt translate into him performing as a small forward seems so obvious it is concerning. Very frustrating. Little things like this raise a few questions re Bolton and co. Why would you not draft a small forward and put the work into him if that is what your need is. 5 games of Gibons in the guts and you would have a clear idea of what we have on our hands currently we still have no idea.

Caleb Daniels would be a great forward line captain for our young group. Understands the game better than most, gets limitations of players, and old enough to be a leader.

I just wonder why we pick up a player like Gibbons who has 40000 possessions in the MIDFIELD and yet plays as a forward and then gets bagged every week because he dosent get it enough.Hmmm.
I wonder why he was continuously passed over by all clubs year after year despite those numbers. Maybe it's because clubs know something about the way his traits transfer to the AFL. Hmmmm I wonder.

It's never that simple.

Gibbons traits are likely viewed as not translating to afl midfields very well, hence being left in the VFL for years.

To be fair to Gibbons he got the ball 16 times after 4 last week and actually did quite a bit of work up the field. I haven’t seen the 360 vision but we have a long and distinguished history of kicking the ball to the shortest guy in our forward line.

They made a good point though; ie where is the leadership in the f50. Who is directing positioning etc in game in that area of the ground.
They suggested Simmo should move down there.

Garters it is a concern and points to a coaching group that is not assessing playing stocks and team roles properly and it is costing us dearly

This is further reinforced with team selections week in, week out

If you could put Daniel in a forward line to fix it the Dogs would have done so already. Their forward line is in worse shape than ours

Couldn't agree more.
